doppelgangmember , in Pentagon hit by ‘critical compromise’ of US air force communications – report

I wonder if this relates to the recent hacking technique on Law Enforcement radios? Like is he using the vulnerability I wonder.

betterdeadthanreddit ,

If you’re talking about the TETRA flaw that made news recently, it’s unlikely to be related. The employee in the article is in the USA where TETRA is not widely used. Can’t rule it out without more details but from what’s written, it sounds like he had legitimate access to the information and tools through his workplace and decided to incorporate it into his hobbies. P25 is more common for encrypted voice and text over radio within US military and law enforcement agencies. It has vulnerabilities too but the reporting on those issues is a bit older so probably won’t make headlines again until something new comes out.

It makes sense that he’d have the information for military-related communications if that was part of his job (though it should have been left at work). As for the FBI and state agencies, those details could have been in the plans for Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA) operations. It’s the sort of thing you can figure out ahead of time so you’re not scrambling to put it all together when the world is on fire. If they’ve rehearsed those scenarios with local and federal partners in the past, any officer worth their shiny collar would identify the need for seamless communication in order to coordinate response efforts more effectively.

6daemonbag ,

Why is this downvoted? Legitimately, I don’t know enough about this subject matter to discern why people are disagreeing with this poster, and why the disagreement isn’t being verbalized.

betterdeadthanreddit ,

It’s not just this discussion, they’ve been checking in on my profile a few times a day recently (or running a script to take out the tedious parts) and voting most of my comments down to zero or slightly negative. I think they’ve got about 30 accounts to work with. Kinda telling when they hit comments in removed posts along with the ones that are still available.

There’s no real harm in it and I’m not willing to spin up some bots of my own to balance the scales. Mostly just interested in seeing why and how they operate so my internet points are a small price to pay.

Anyway, the radio stuff is pretty cool once you separate out the crimes and national security implications. You mentioned not knowing enough about these topics so, while I’m far from an expert on these systems, I have had some jobs and hobbies that give me a peripheral awareness of how the pieces of the article fit together. If there are any parts you’d like to know more about, I could at least point you toward some resources on the subject.

Another day, another publicity stunt.

I think stunts worked out well for Musk’s image initially because he was seen as “Iron Man IRL” and his… widely imaginative ideas were seen as genius and innovative.

However, as his current image has now become “middle schooler in a grown man’s body with way too much money”, all of his stunts only reinforces that image into his descent into the butt of the joke. He of course, doesn’t seem to understand that and only looks to double down.

It’s good that we’re all sick of hearing about him at this point, because that’s the reputation a person like him deserves.

This is also the reason why even smart people fall for scams too. People are emotional and only see what they want to see.

The US government should take a controlling stake in companies that are deemed vital enough to receive a bailout.

ArbitraryValue ,

They had a 30% stake here - would a 51% stake be any different?

Jarmer ,

No, because this sets an extremely bad precedent. The simpler answer is just not give bailouts like this. A properly functioning anti-trust department wouldn’t let these private companies get so big they are deemed “too vital to fail” … but here we are.

This, like the rest of it, is on purpose. He wants to create a “they are hostile to me in SF despite my desire to stay in the city, so I will now relocate Twitter to Texas”. Ultimately, he wants to destroy Twitter as it was previously a place used to organize movements (Arab spring, Saudis are #2 investor in Twitter behind musk) and amplify information about the embarrassing failures and crimes of fascists like him. Destroy the validity (and even basic functionality) of the site, and less people hear those messages.

agent_flounder , in ‘I’m not wanted’: Florida universities hit by brain drain as academics flee
@agent_flounder@lemmy.world avatar

Most likely this drain of academics was an intended effect of the laws passed under DeSantis. The loss of academics hobbles institutes of higher learning while positions remain unfilled, resulting in a more ignorant populace. It also opens the possibility for far right extremists to infiltrate academia to corrupt academic thought and principles from within. The danger of ultra right wing, bigoted, nationalistic, authoritarianism continues to grow. How long before more right wing states follow suit?

SkyeStarfall ,

It also ruins Florida’s economy, though. Brain drain is like the last thing nearly all places want.

PalmTreeIsBestTree ,

Mississippi and Louisiana can confirm this phenomenon.

tipicaldik ,

My wife has extended family from Mississippi. They are some of the stupidest people I have ever met. They all, and I mean ALL, send their kids to private schools so they won’t have to attend alongside black kids. One of her cousins was just down visiting with us and I walked in while she was ranting about how “I know trump is blahbidyblah, but things were so much better under him… just look at the GAS PRICES screee scrawww hurr durr”. I did the ol’ Grandpa Simpson about face and checked tf out before I said something ugly and upset my wife (not that she actually agrees with her cousin or anything, I just need to be nice…)

Boddhisatva ,

The voters may not want the economy to suffer but DeSantis and his cronies do. It’s part of the GOP playbook. Damage the economy with tax cuts and other legislation, then blame the Democrats for the bad economy. Their voters always fall for it.

Boddhisatva ,

Conservatives have been gutting education for 40 years. Look at the educational outcomes in Republican run states. They like ignorant, meaning uneducated voters. Crippling higher education is definitely their goal.

SnekyLemming , in Big business lobbies against heat protections for workers as US boils

I work in an industry working with other industrial businesses and we’ve seen so many of their employees get heat related injuries this summer. It’s very hard to get companies to view people as humans and not as a disposable asset.

A lot of times these companies won’t increase protections for workers without the government stepping in with laws and regulations.

Asafum ,

I work in an open air factory on Long island. It’s gets over 90°F inside and whatever humidity it is outside is what we have here.

I’ve looked into the laws for factories in NY and the legislation is purposely vague… “all factories are to maintain proper humidity and temperature.” They then never define what proper temp and humidity is… My representatives don’t respond when asked about it.

I’m so happy it’s nice this week so far, last week was brutal…

DM_Me_Boobs OP ,

Holy shit that’s really warm for working inside a factory all day. Thank you for sharing your insight especially since a lot of the news coverage is in places setting temperature records and not places where the heat index is through the roof. I suppose it’s f*kn hot all over this summer.

What? He was caught wanking off at a wanking off theater.

    Mrmcmisterson ,

    From the article

Then in 2004, Reubens was sentenced to three years probation after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor obscenity charge involving photographs of minors engaged in sexual conduct were seized from him

    Tmiwi ,

It was the 90’s, before the internet and he had a thing for pornography. The pussycat theatre was specifically an adult theatre that showed pornography, three other men were arrested with him, presumably because that what people went to the theatre for.

He has had 1 or 2 incidents involving child pornography of some sort (which I'm not underplaying lol), but as far as molesting, not that we know.

    They were eventually dropped.

    SilentStorms ,

No, he was caught jerking off in a porn theater and charged with public indecency. In my opinion the whole thing was blown out of proportion and a stain on his legacy that doesn’t deserve to be there. People just hear “sex crimes” and “children’s performer” and come to that assumption. (No shade to you, its a fair assumption. I more have a problem with how the media handled it at the time)

You should probably continue on with the quotes a bit longer.

“That mischaracterizes the art collection seized,” Reubens’ lawyer, Blair Berk said Friday. “If that means a black-and-white tintype from 1901 with a young man of indeterminate, 17- to 19-year-old age, laying on the beach after having gone skinny-dipping … then they got it.”

“It was clear from the start that we, along with the many distinguished art experts supporting Paul’s art photography collection, vehemently disagreed with the city prosecutor’s view of what constitutes art,” Berk said.

From the same article you linked.

    BonesOfTheMoon ,

I don’t care about the wanking, but the CP possession charge is hard to ignore.

    NorwegianBlues ,

It’s easy to ignore when it was dropped. Charges are not convictions.

    thenyaaho ,

IIRC he never claimed to not own CP; He was charged and there was legitimate evidence of dozens of CP materials. His legal defense was that he buys bulk lots of kisch art and wasn’t aware the offending material was in there. He would later in 2004 (after charges were dropped in exchange for a obscenity charge) claim that he was aware of the CP; but he only owned it for as he also collected vintage Erotica; and he further claimed the CP was “innocent nudes” and in no way pornographic in nature. Not being charged doesn’t mean he didn’t actually own the offending materials.
