jeffw , in Biden to announce $9 billion more in student debt relief
@jeffw@lemmy.world avatar

According to a White House fact sheet, the new measures include:

  • $5.2 billion in additional debt relief for 53,000 borrowers under Public Service Loan Forgiveness programs
  • nearly $2.8 billion in new debt relief for nearly 51,000 borrowers through fixes to “income-driven repayment,” which the White House says are borrowers who made 20 years or more of payments "but never got the relief they were entitled to."
  • And $1.2 billion for nearly 22,000 borrowers who have a disability who have been identified and approved for discharge through a data match with the Social Security Administration.

This is what I was curious about. Thank you.

mojo , in Over 60 percent of Gen Z have an anxiety disorder

This is just straight up false

Fedizen ,

It might be this has always been the case

sfgifz ,

In a follow-up to our initial research, we surveyed nearly 1,000 Gen Zers who struggle with anxiety to ask them about what and who causes them to have anxious thoughts.

According to our research, more than 1 in 2 struggle with anxiety daily, and 1 in 3 are taking anxiety medication to try and find relief. But some are turning to other drugs or alcohol to cope.

The set of people surveyed are ones who claimed to suffer from anxiety. Every conclusion making claims on all Gen-Z after that is going to be flawed since the pool didn’t include non-anxious Z’s.

avidamoeba , in Nonunion autoworkers are watching the UAW — and deciding whether they want in
@avidamoeba@lemmy.ca avatar

As Thomas sees it, “in the South, you have a lot of scared people that don’t know much about a union because they’ve been raised to be against a union.” But he said the Big Three strikes make now a “great time” for the UAW to ramp up organizing, including at nonunion plants.

Raise them right.

I thought they figured this out already, and it was a combination of the lime chunks allowing the concrete to heal, and also mixing it hot somehow made a difference.

Salamendacious OP ,
@Salamendacious@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve heard lots of reasons. One was that the Romans used volcanic ash, which has some kind of special structure that maked it durable. I’ve also heard that it had to do with using salt water. Obviously not using rebar is important to longevity. The article talks about the lime chunks in the Roman section. I’m kind of a sucker for any article about Roman history though.

Gaspar , in Shouting at children can be as damaging as physical or sexual abuse, study says
@Gaspar@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

My dad loves to yell. Not at me, anymore, but he got it from his mother - they used to work out their problems in the form of screaming matches. I remember early in my teenage years he would bring up, almost out of nowhere sometimes, that he never hit us. He was proud of that. But man oh man, he sure loved to yell at us.

I only remember my grandfather yelling at me, once. It’s not even fair to say “yelling AT me”, because he was yelling FOR me - I was a dumb kid and I’d left the front door open to go outside and play. Once I got in front of him, he explained to me - calmly, quietly, but firmly - why I couldn’t do that. I never did it again. I don’t remember him yelling before or since that moment.

I miss my grandfather - he’s the source of some of my fondest childhood memories and I can only hope I do him proud. Meanwhile, when my dad dies, I’ll be glad to be rid of him. So, you do the math.

The math might be either that your grandfather was simply a better person, or that he had less stress at the time when he was bringing you up. He’s after all the one who brought up your father.

themeatbridge , in [US] A nationwide emergency alert will be sent to all U.S. cellphones Wednesday

I’m a little over 40 years old, which means I’ve experienced a number of situations where such an emergency broadcast system would have been a helpful way to disseminate information and quell panic. We’ve had tests of these systems for as long as I can remember.

I also cannot remember it ever actually being used.

Zoomboingding ,
@Zoomboingding@lemmy.world avatar

Adding to that, didn’t we JUST have a different system send a nationwide alert about 4 or 5 years ago?

SheeEttin ,

Really? You’ve never heard EAS interruptions on the TV or radio for weather, or gotten an AMBER alert on your phone?

themeatbridge ,

Not for every phone everywhere in the country.

Zaktor ,

I’m in Hawaii. I can remember one being used. To create panic. Twitter was where the best attempt at quelling the panic was done.

Bye ,

I have so many friends who were like “yeah I knew it was fake”. Even if they did, so many of us didn’t and were scared. I was super scared. Fucking old man I hate him. Why would you wait so long to send the follow up. Awful.

Zaktor ,

While a lot of other institutions were caught flat footed, everyone in that office presumably got the alert as well and should have realized immediately it was a huge fuckup.

ryathal ,

My state used it when a natural gas plant had an explosion to ask people to lower their thermostats. They also used it for a handful of covid updates that felt like the incorrect use of such a system.

Honytawk , in Shouting at children can be as damaging as physical or sexual abuse, study says

Maybe shouting at children all the time until they leave home is about the same as them getting sexually abused once.

But they aren’t equivalent in the slightest when compared in the same quantities.
