lagomorphlecture , in How Google Alters Search Queries to Get at Your Wallet

“Google likely alters queries billions of times a day in trillions of different variations. Here’s how it works. Say you search for “children’s clothing.” Google converts it, without your knowledge, to a search for “NIKOLAI-brand kidswear,” making a behind-the-scenes substitution of your actual query with a different query that just happens to generate more money for the company, and will generate results you weren’t searching for at all. It’s not possible for you to opt out of the substitution. If you don’t get the results you want, and you try to refine your query, you are wasting your time. This is a twisted shopping mall you can’t escape.”

It also says at one point that the substitutions are imperceptible to the user, although I think we ALL perceive that this is happening. You would have to be born yesterday not to realize that they longer return results for what you searched for. It also says it’s futile to alter your search terms, which I suspect we all knew as well.

spaghettiwestern OP ,

Just came back to post that part to the OP. Google took “Don’t be Evil” out of their mission statement for a reason.

Fiorenzo ,

They literally did?? I’m not surprised, only… You’ve a link?

Holyhandgrenade ,
@Holyhandgrenade@lemmy.world avatar

I googled bluebottles the other day, google only showed me where to shop for literal blue bottles.
It grinds my gears, it does.

PugJesus , in What was Elon Musk’s strategy for Twitter? A fired Trump White House staffer offers a tantalizing clue
@PugJesus@kbin.social avatar

Musk’s purchase of Twitter, the 3,000-word anonymous article said, would amount to a “declaration of war against the Globalist American Empire.” The sender of the texts was offering Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, a playbook for the takeover and transformation of Twitter. As the anniversary of Musk's purchase approaches, the identity of the sender remains unknown.

The article then expressed sympathy for the Russian-government-controlled news outlets Russia Today and Sputnik, saying they had been unfairly “canceled” after Russia invaded Ukraine. Musk ended the use of “state-sponsored media” labels on Twitter this year, dropping it from the accounts of Russia Today, Sputnik and many other state-owned organizations. The change reportedly prompted RT editor Margarita Simonyan to send Musk a note of appreciation.

IamRoot , in The UAW Decided to Use a Novel Strike Strategy. It’s Working.

From the article:

“Bargaining with the Big Three in public, all at the same time, also turns the tables on the companies. UAW members aren’t competing in a race to the bottom — instead, the companies must compete to sign a good deal first and prevent more disruption to their operations. And everyone knows who the holdouts are.”

Striking against the big three at the same time is new as well as using social media to highlight the union’s requirements.

If you click on a news link, even here, you are likely to get:

  • We “value” your privacy, please click “sure that sounds great” or spend some minutes in our opt-out game
  • Sign up for the news letter or click on “no thanks, I prefer to be ignorant
  • How would you like to pay?
  • Sorry this content is unavailable in your region because we won’t follow the euro laws.

If click through rates from social media are dropping, it’s not just due to the social media.

  • No, I don’t want you to send me notifications
  • No, don’t auto play your video (mainstream video narration sucks frankly)
  • No, don’t auto float the paused video on my screen
  • No, clicking on the X didn’t mean I want you to stop floating but start playing again
  • No, I don’t want to allow location services

I can’t remember if it was the NBC or CBS site that did most of those on each page but it annoyed me every single time.

Kinda dissapointed its not SimAnt. Then again, maybe that had the wrong goals. Still, you trade bodies with the spider and go to town on those other ants.

The middle kingdom is retreating as it starts to grow old and shrink.

Deceptichum ,
@Deceptichum@kbin.social avatar

Except it’s pushing it’s boundaries and trying to steal its neighbours land/ocean.

It is retreating socially, but only because they’re further entrenching themselves on their nationalistic path to WW3 and you can’t dehumanise your enemy while having nice things with them.

vivadanang ,

I think they’re increasingly frustrated that nothing is working in their coastal efforts - the rest of the south pacific nations don’t want further encroaching ‘9-line’ bullshit fucking with their fisheries and building temporary sand islands in wacky places (that appear to be washing away quickly). Their only real friend is North Korea, and that’s like having the dumbest, poorest, most backward simp always hanging around and picking fights with the enormous economies that surround the South China Sea… Aus, Japan, SK, they’re not gonna let China do what it wants… fuck, Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia don’t even want to play with China much and have actively pushed back on their encroachments.

So what’s left?

Well… There’s a tremendous amount of land and resources, both known and unexplored, to the north. Also, I think China still wants Vladivostok back. And you know who happens to be tremendously vulnerable at the moment? It’s funny when we think of the middle kingdom as old, when the bear is wheezing and needs a new liver stat.
