That sounds like a command that could work, sudo KUUUUUUUUUU, the more Us the slower it details the important files being deleted, without allowing you to cancel the command
Ignoring the fact that it’s not even true… My favorite part of the fallout from that quote were all the Trump supporters, most of whom will never see $1mil in total earnings across their lives, scrambling to defend it as if it were a perfectly reasonable thing to say.
Like, “It’s just because he’s so rich that a million dollars really does seem like a small loan!”
Sure, okay Jim-Bob, and you’re dumb enough to believe a guy whose concept of money is that warped gives a damn about you? lol
Yeah, it’s so annoying and masturbatory. “Everyone who criticizes my treat is just shrieking at me for liking it”. I don’t like people fixating on tech aspects (at least for indies and small publisher games, AAA can get fucked), but they do not, in my experience, shriek at me for liking things that run poorly.
The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as “Euro-English”. In the first year, “s” will replace the soft “c”. Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard “c” will be dropped in favour of “k”. This should klear up konfusion, and keyboards kan have one less letter.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year when the troublesome “ph” will be replaced with “f”. This will make words like fotograf 20% shorter.
In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible.
Governments will enkourage the removal of double letters which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling.
Also, al wil agre that the horibl mes of the silent “e” in the languag is disgrasful and it should go away.
By the 4th yer peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing “th” with “z” and “w” with “v”.
During ze fifz yer, ze unesesary “o” kan be dropd from vords kontaining “ou” and after ziz fifz yer, ve vil hav a reil sensi bl riten styl.
Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi TU understand ech oza. Ze drem of a united urop vil finali kom tru.
Und efter ze fifz yer, ve vil al be speking German like zey vunted in ze forst plas.
For context, in this book, “missed by the wind” (which kinda sounds like gone with the wind) the author introduces a change to the language in every chapter, making it easier every time. And he succeeds. Highly recommend.
As I understand it, it wasn’t to work the carbon out of it, but instead to simply evenly spread the impurities throughout the whole sword, so there weren’t any specific points of weakness
Obligatory “It wasn’t folded 1000 times, it was folded 11 times giving it more than a thousand folds.” Fun fact, the older traditional Japanese forges were basically assembled from mud found right there on the rivers where they found their low grade iron, and this process was kept alive by spiritualism and tradition conservatives, so it’s honestly a miracle they assembled anything long and sharp at all. Most of the iron in Japan is considered low grade Pyrite at only 46% iron, while other places in the world had access to Magnetite with up to 72% iron before any refining.
I have never successfully run any piped video on any platform. Literally every pipedbot post has been worthless, at best, and usually actively frustrating as I’d actually use an alternative youtube frontend.
I had to really work with it to find a handful that actually showed video. Even then, they're hit and miss, sometimes requiring pings to remind them that I exist.
Huh, I wonder what the issue is. I e clicked on many of them and never had a problem with the video starting, though I suppose I’ve heard there were problems recently (as in perhaps YouTube has been hampering it).
I’ve never had any trouble playing videos with NewPipe + Sponsorblock on Android.
In a desktop browser it’s trickier, but Libredirect helps immensely to redirect to a working instance on the occasion that one of them is down/doesn’t play the video
I don’t rely on any bots. I’d recommend unchecking “show bot accounts.” I know some people find a few of them helpful, and I don’t want to sound ungrateful to the people who’ve developed them, but they mostly just clutter up the threads in my experience
does hiding bot accounts hide both comments and posts? I don’t mind bot comments, but bot posts are annoying because they can be quite spammy and never have any activity (at least that i’ve seen). so far, i’ve just been user-blocking them as i see them…
Yeah, if you’ll advertise a service like that, it should work already. Otherwise, odds are I (and other people too, probably) will click it two or three times, then give up. If I see future links, I’ll remember that it didn’t work, be biased to not even try anymore, and potentially never notice if it actually did improve and start working.
It’s a common FOSS / Privacy-respecting-service issue, where someone will create something out of ideology, but the result will have poor usability, and unless you’re really really invested into the ideology yourself, you’ll probably stop using it because your free time is too precious to spend on getting frustrated over stuff that works poorly.
I feel the FOSS / Privacy Alternatives community needs to learn the lesson many bic companies have learned already or are learning now, that the quality of the User Experience is important in retaining people. Ideology can get them to try, but functionality and ease of use will keep them from running back to Google et al.
I think this community should ban political memes, and instead have another community for only political memes. I’m from Costa Rica and I don’t care about the USA politics or stuff
US politics affect the rest of humans on the planet so I’d probably say it’s worth paying attention to. But I do like the idea of a separate political memes community so that the people have a choice.
“Political Memes” is extremely vague. I opened the community, and this was the 3rd meme that came up. Just to show you that it doesn’t take much to find an example that really blurs the line of what would be a political meme and what isn’t.
Does this reflect how the platform is actually doing or do we just like the circlejerk of wishing they would fail? Because everything I’ve seen says Reddit has been completely unaffected by the changes made and they’re still getting more user signups, engagements and interaction/posts than ever.
Tik Tok also seems to be growing strong.
Twitter is a genuine laughing stalk and is pulling major shit…but everyone still seems to be using it regularly.
if you have been back to reddit, they might have growing numbers (probably due to shitty practices forcing you to use their app instead of mobile browser) etc. but the quality of discussions and the amount of bots just reposting the same comments skyrocketed.
I mean it’s a huge site, it won’t die, but if you look at it that way, Facebook is still alive, do you have a desire to spend time on that site though?
Pleased to say I haven’t been back to Reddit (except to scrub my entire history there to nuke my account). Reddit quality going completely down the toilet is something seen long before these changes were made. It’s really sad to see that companies aren’t forced to make better products because people will put time and money into these shit platforms regardless.
yeah I already noticed the downhill trend before the API changes but after it really went into a nosedive, expectedly the power users posting good shit just left, so rage bait reposts are the trending things.
I have been back to reddit to check things out from time to time. The quality has definitely degraded, and their changes to not seeing NSFW stuff without logging in or using their app has me visiting less and less.
The comment section is still nice, but I just don’t see the quality it once had.
The burden of proof lies in the eyes of the Christian god! And as a fellow Muslim, I can say nothing about it, but He might speak through me and say that Reddit became a place without much new content.
I don’t save sources in case of future need for references. I haven’t written a thesis on the matter. It came up in a few articles in my tech news RSS feeds. You’re welcome to not believe me and I would readily consider contrary information anyone else offers it.
Only a good 0.1% of reddit actually “creates content” with the rest having only engagement via comments. A good 99% of those also don’t do anything but lurk.
The people that make the content are also the ones more likely to switch to alternatives.
It’s an engagement loop so while the amount of signups and accounts is unchanged, there is simply less content to keep people around and to monetize.
We can take a look at the comment count on major subreddits over time. Using the top 5 most commented listed on Subreddit Stats, and then using Social Rise to see comments per day (go down to “Graph of” and click “comments”).
All except Starfield show comments cratering at the beginning of July, and they’re not coming back. Obviously, Starfield is a special case given the release of the game. AITAH was also just starting to pick up and then had its jugular cut out. Across the board, there looks to be a 3 or 4 times reduction in comment rates.
Now, perhaps the site is still OK among the more niche subreddits. That’d take a lot longer to analyze. But it’s clear the big traffic drivers are not pulling people in anymore.
While I overall agree this seems to be the case at first glance, I do notice that august there’s a huge drop that correlates with school starting up again. Probably need to compare to previous summers.
Edit: looks like it's still pretty huge even accounting for that
Good to know, i was having trouble on mobile with it. Thanks!
I'm glad I left that site. They just view us all as little addicts and have lost any semblance of caring about what made reddit work in the first place.
I just have a hard time believing this when the_donald started on reddit. The site has been an incubator for right wing actors for years. Even the infamous Stormfront recognized the opportunities for recruitment there years ago.
Reddit is driven by search traffic and the results got a lot worse since a lot of good posters quit. They lost the content but not the users yet, I think it’s just going to take a long time before they truly see the damage in their traffic statistics!
Minimum parking standards desroyed density in downtown cores and were basically based off of no real numbers or data. The subsidizing of private vehicle ownership fueled the destruction.
The funny thing is that some guy i worked for complained a lot about not having a lot of parking in the middle of a dense city.
I said yeah maybe but do you want it to look like some american parking city?
And he was like yes, i'm going there next month.
It already is on Connect? I blocked both instances, so no posts from either show in my feed and comments from users on those instances on other posts appear as “blocked by an instance filter,” which you can choose to show it if you want
Yeah. It’d make things a lot easier. Today I made a mistake and got into a discussion with the tankies from hexbear. Don’t recommend. Will call you a nazi for not agreeing with their every statement.
Edit: Not all of them of course. Tho, I’d say that the most uses ad personam as an ultimate argument.
Heard a lot of this growing up like Seeger, Peter Paul and Mary, Joan Baez, but also Canadians like Lightfoot and Stan Rogers. Lately I’ve enjoyed some of the IWWs compilations of workers’ songs, Utah Philips etc. Phil Ochs is up there too.
My mother’s from an assimilated Mennonite background and it was one of the non-Christian genres that was permissible to her parents, because of the pacifist and civil rights sentiments in a lot of that music at the time. Also it lacked the sex and drugs themes which rock had. “I Aint Marching Anymore” and “Where have all the flowers gone?” I remember hearing quite often.
An absoluteky outstanding song by Cash btw. If you haven’t checked it out, I suggest you do so. Even if you have zero interest in Country do yourself a favour.
I know this is obvious, but Cash’s beliefs are endlessly fascinating. The same man who recorded “Ragged Old Flag” also wrote “Man in Black” and covered “Out Among the Stars.” The latter is a song about a kid who commits suicide by cop because he doesn’t feel like his life matters.
I dislike a lot of country music, but Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson are practically a genre in and of themselves, seperated from even the outlaw country genre they started.
We listened to the song in English class when I was about 14 years old and we discussed it quite a bit afterwards. I guess it was kind of a first transitioning into adulthood for me, seeing how much is going wrong and hurting people. Since then about 95 % of my wardrobe is black. It’s a statement and a reminder for myself and I want need to carry it everywhere I go.
Lightning was significantly ahead of the competition when it came out in 2012. Micro-USB is a terrible collection of ports. C came out two years later though, and quickly surpassed Lightning in almost every way.
The amount of USB type ports I’ve seen where the ‘tongue’ has been absolutely mangled is mind boggling — an issue that Lightning completely bypassed.
For example, I’m repairing some kids PS5 and both back USB ports have had their pins twisted and the plastic snapped off. The HDMI port pins are lifting from the mainboard and the front of the unit is scratched to high hell. I see some of the worst treated tech at my job, and those plastic bits get damaged a lot. While Apple needed to move to USB-C six years ago with the iPhone X, I will respect Lightning for this one thing.
I recall the same issue on the cables for my old 30-pin connector, and Apple earbuds / in-ear headphones. Don’t think it’s related to Lightning, just Apple cables
I’m a fan of iPhones, Apple Watches, and iPads, but most of Apple’s accessories are terrible. MagSafe is fine because of how it’s used, and their wall adapters are fine. But Apple brand cables, phone cases, watch bands, etc. are all garbage. I mean, they will literally be in the garbage in under a year. Never fails.
Doesn’t matter how “environmentally friendly” a product is - if you need to replace it frequently, it’s bad for the planet and for your wallet. Just exclusively buy 3rd party cables and accessories that are cheaper and higher quality.
Little tip - it’s usually because of pocket lint. Take a small piece of plastic or a toothpick and clean it out. 9 times out of 10, that’s all you need.
Alternatively, get yourself a bulk pack of compressed air cans and solve this and many other problems in life without needing to jam shit into the port. If you use it often enough, invest in a powered air duster.
Just invest in the Data Vac or one of the millions of off brands on Amazon. Less waste that way. I use off brand more frequently but the data vac feels like it’s built to last and has more power.
Data Vac is my plan once I finish this 12-pack of cans. But at this rate, that’ll take me another 2 years. It was $26 when I bought it, but now I see they’re $45 - that’s half the cost of a Data Vac. So there’s no point in getting disposables at that price.
Oh no, I’m talking outright wrecked — you can see damaged pins upon observation.
(To be clear to the downvoters, I see this in my job where I repair consumer tech. I’ve clarified in my original post since some people seem to think I’m arguing exclusively in favour of lightning, or maybe think I’ve seen this on my own devices?)
I clean out densely compacted pocket lint frequently out of customer devices. One needle nose tweezer end for extracting the bulk, then isopropyl on a thin lint free cloth pushed in with a small piece of plastic to determine what’s left inside that isn’t easily visible. Typically makes the port look as good as new.
Ahh i wasn’t certain, I must have used the developed date instead of the release date on the wiki when I double checked. Thanks for the correction. C isn’t perfect, but it’s a pretty damn versatile panda convenient port in my experience.
The problems with type C cables have to do with overloading it to work with very high bandwidth applications like thunderbolt docks (which is mostly to do with the cable itself rather than the connector). Nobody has any issues with charging and basic data transfer on type-C (no more than any other cable).
The problems with type c cables come from the spec that allows every cable to work differently. Did you know type c cables are allowed to work in only one direction? Yeah, they can have data directionality. There are a ton of other issues but I seriously doubt anyone that is downvoting has ever soldered their own type c cable or even read the spec for them so it’s pretty clear they don’t realize all the issues.
