Luckily it’s usually an easy fix if you know your way around the UEFI. Just plop grub back where it needs to be in the boot order.

Although I definitely wish Windows didn’t mess with the boot order occassionally.

Also, finally, I dual-boot and I haven’t actually had this happen in about a year now. I think maybe Microsoft finally stopped fucking around (with this one thing).

EDIT: Actually, it could be because I’m on Windows 10 and they stopped “Feature Updates” and all I get are security updates now. That could be why they stopped fucking with my boot order.

dingus ,

What users consider “Features” and what Microsoft considers “Features” are wildly different. I’d say that probably played a role in it.

Honestly, the only useful “features” in Windows I’ve found in the last few years were all provided by a non-standard Microsoft app that isn’t easy to find: PowerToys.

PowerShell is nice too, but it’s not new enough to be considered a “feature” anymore.

Do not let your landlord steal your deposit.

  • Take pictures before you move in. Make sure to document any damage no matter how small.
  • Keep a signed copy of your lease in a safe place.
  • Leave the place in as good condition as it was when you found it. Make sure any specific items mentioned as part of the move out are addressed and that you can prove it.
  • Take pictures when you move out.
  • Research your states small claims court rules and procedures.
  • Sue landlord in small claims court if they try to steal your deposit.

I did this to a landlord who tried to rip us off with a bunch of bullshit fees after we left the house in immaculate condition. We tried talking to them and they wouldn’t even respond. It cost me about $100 for the court fee and to have them served. They must have known they fucked up because they paid up (deposit and court fees) almost immediately.

It pissed me off because I guarantee I’m not the first person they pulled that shit on.

Sukisuki ,

This was an advice from my mom and for my first flat I ignored it. It ended up with landlord keeping the deposit because of some items we didn’t take with us. Mentioned items were a bunch of worthless trash he, so politely, asked us to keep in an unused room because he could need them later. After that I religiously documented every single detail & interaction with landlords(texts etc.) Saved my ass a bunch of times.

TheWiseAlaundo , in But if you're 3 minutes late they throw a hissyfit

I actually did ask my Doctor about why this happens once. Mainly it’s because if a patient before you has something that needs more time it messes up the schedule for every patient after… and this happens every single day. If no one cancels their appointments, then this problem just continually compounds throughout the day. The best bet to being seen on time is to be the first patient of the day.

Or just intentionally show up a few minutes late and take the mild scolding from the receptionist. It’s not like they’re going to turn ya away

Stamets OP ,
@Stamets@startrek.website avatar

I wish that were true. It isn’t. My doc routinely sets me up as his first or second patient of the day and he’s always late. Docs seem to like blaming patients for their own faults.

waffle ,

Think about it. If the clinic staff are slow to room the patient, the physician likely tries to account for that. Additionally, your doc may have been rounding on folks (checking in on other patients) in the morning - e.g., say they did a surgery the day before, it’s often best practice to drop in to make sure people are recovering well.

All of this adds complexity to an MDs schedule. Not to say that timeliness doesn’t matter or that your time isn’t important, but it’s not always a matter of someone being late - it could be the result of patients not being roomed on time for the last 2 years, so your doc shows up at 8:15 because the clinic staff don’t normally have the first patient roomed by 8 am.

Source: wife is an obgyn

Stamets OP ,
@Stamets@startrek.website avatar

If that’s the truth then it’s even less acceptable than just simply being late.

My doc isn’t checking in on other patients when I’m his first patient of the day. His practice opens the same time he’s booking the appointment for but I’ve gotta wait 10-20 minutes for him to check in on other patients? Doubtful. Also, every single job I have ever had says that if you need to get stuff done then you show up early to get it done. This Doc can’t show up 10-15 minutes early to make some phone calls and check in on the patients?

If the patients aren’t being roomed on time because of staff that 2 years deep into incompetence, then maybe you should look into changing your employees over punishing your patients? That seems like the clinic staff are the problem. Not the patient. Why am I paying with my time because the clinics employees can’t do their jobs? It takes 1 minute, maximum, to get put into a room. You walk up to the screen, tell them your name, and then when a room is available they tell you to go to it. I cannot find a single reason why a Doc would think it’d take 15 minutes to get that done.

waffle ,

Yeah for sure. The clinic staff can make a huge difference and it’s not always the physicians administrative responsibility to ensure that the clinic runs on time. They can influence that, but do you know how challenging it can be to replace physician assistants and/or nurses? They’re in very high demand.

Agree with a previous comment that some docs have a god complex and don’t care about other people’s time.

Overall it would be great if the world aligned with the time slots I have scheduled for activities and appointments, but it’s not always as easy as it appears in semi-complex environments.

KillAllPoorPeople ,

Having worked in healthcare my entire adult life, I can safely say that nearly every MD/DO thinks they’re a super being, better than anyone they perceive beneath them. It’s a huge fucking problem. They do not think other people’s time is more important than theirs.

FordBeeblebrox ,

I’ve literally watched an MD grab a chart, read it and then go get a coffee cause the pt can wait (JUST a leg infection spreading). No one is more important than Dr Me

somethingp ,

Sometimes when you’re on hour 12 of your shift working 6-7 shifts/week, after having dealt with 20 similar patients that day, you need a coffee before being able to properly evaluate the next potentially lethal leg infection.

FordBeeblebrox ,

Doc went to medical school and you didn’t, therefore he is a better person and you will wait for their special attention. If you have to wait, that’s your fault for not being a doctor. Oh you’re an ace engineer? Fuck you I’m a doctor

Source: related to a couple docs and they are fucking insufferable

placatedmayhem ,

Credentialism. Some doctors treat their staff the same way. If an argument, no matter how logical, comes from someone that doesn’t have an MD, PhD, or other doctor initials behind their name, it gets automatically dismissed. For some, it’s even on non-medical stuff. This happens with non-medical academics, too.

FordBeeblebrox ,

Your tires need to be rotated, the tread is wearing unevenly. I know this cause I’ve turned a wrench or two.

ReluctantMuskrat ,

Doc was behind already and had something after work they were not going to miss. Did they also charge you for missing the appt?

Docs could schedule in some extra time to better accommodate the eventual appts that run over, but then that doesn’t maximize profit.

Kusimulkku ,

I wouldn’t call 10 minutes “a few minutes”

stebo02 ,
@stebo02@sopuli.xyz avatar

you’d think they’d leave some gaps between their appointments to compensate for this phenomenon?

somethingp ,

For the US: Sometimes the physician doesn’t actually control scheduling, it is done by whoever owns/runs the clinic. Also, there arent scheduled gaps because lots of things need to happen when a patient shows up. So while the physician finishes up with the last patient and is doing their documentation, an MA or RN will start intake on the next patient taking them to their room, getting vitals, etc. Then the physician sees them. So even 20 min appointments are generally longer because someone might arrive on time at 1pm, then by the time they’re checked in, in a room, done with vitals, it might already be 1:10. So there are like natural gaps that occur in the schedule. But I agree that the lack of transparency in the process really makes it difficult to stay on schedule. Ideally there’d be 1:1 appointment: documentation time for each patient, however payment structures are not designed for this. Instead they like to maximize the number of patients seen per day.

PersnickityPenguin ,

I’ve never had a doctor’s appointment go shorter than an hour, even for a very minor or basic visit. Often they last about 2 hours.

somethingp ,

I’d be willing to bet the actual interaction with the doctor is a short part of the 2 hours that you’re there. And I think this is where a lot of the scheduling frustration comes in.

Mine shows ads but doesn’t play audio. Plus the ads are just for like their Citi credit card, relatively unobtrusive.

Tangentially, I recently came to the unfortunate conclusion that it’s just not worth my time to get gas at Costco if there’s a line, especially if I’m out and about on a lunch break. The gas is good and it’s much cheaper, but if it’s like 6 cars back and a 15-20 minute wait, I actually save money by filling up elsewhere and just getting back to work sooner.

Our mobile data is the biggest scam that exists on this earth. A handful of gigabytes for 10s of €s per month.

The highest IQ people will say "Well it doesn't have to be more than a few gigabytes, you got wifi at home anyways, I barely reach the mobile data limit", well it doesn't have to be 10s of €s for a handful of gigabytes either/anyways.

And coverage outside has always been between "Barely alright" and "Dogshit non-existent" too, doesn't matter if you're in a city, around a city or on a street between cities, especially on the streets though you're lucky if you can fucking "ping -c 4 google.com" with package loss.

30p87 ,

For it’s the cheap cheap price of 22.4€/person for 20 GB 5G per person. And that’s just because my father has been a customer for a long time and I’m a second device in his contract now, with 50% off. I also reach the 20 GB limit fairly often, especially when on the go a lot. Because Deutsche Bahn. F them. Not even a working Captive Portal is possible for them, so my Laptop has to connect to my Phones Hotspot. I’m in luck with coverage actually, it’s pretty OK even in my village and all around. It’s just bad in my school.

blackn1ght ,

Is there something specific about Germany where people don’t use or have WiFi?

30p87 ,

Not really, almost everyone has WiFi. However, many only have DSL - with speeds up to 10 Mbps or even lower. And that still for a price that’s way too high. Usually it happens at more remote places, like 10 km away from the nearest city. Only one ISP is available, nobody cares about upgrading the rotting copper cables, or even laying fiber, so the customer just gets what’s available for the price the ISP wants, there are basically no restrictions. We’re very lucky to have Gigabit for 50€/month and soon fiber - and that’s not even certain. A company is laying fiber, they’re basically called ‘German Fiber Optic’. As they only offer static public IPv4s for a premium price however, we didn’t go for it. Rule of thumb is that either other ISPs will do their own cables just as the first one has been finished, so as not to lose customers. As ISP 1 that originally laid fiber could charge any amount for that only cable though, ISP 2 will either bite their cheeks and rent it or actually lay it themselves. From that point on the cable will be cheaper for ISP n>=3, as ISP 1+2 want to get them as a customer. So we just need to wait. Not an option for, as said, remote points, who may not have any acceptable connection but a tower right in their backyard.

jannis ,

Eh, I pay 15 Euro a month for unlimited data at 15 Mbps

BritishJ ,

Lots of countries only have mobile data to homes. Think African countries, India, Pakistan, then you’ve got Vietnam etc, with villages on rivers.

RavenFellBlade ,
@RavenFellBlade@startrek.website avatar

Dude… try rural Illinois. The only internet I can get faster than 3mbps is cellular hotspot, and that’s supposed to be 5G but is usually actually 4G out here. That’s it. I can get dial-up, DSL, cable that is somehow slower than DSL and constantly disconnects, or hotspot from AT&T.

America is far from the best example of decent internet access if you live more than a few miles from a major urban hub. In fact, in rural areas, your options are not only stupidly limited, but also criminally expensive. For land-based internet at 3mbps where I live costs $6 more per month than my sister-in-law’s GB Fiber 20 miles away, and has data caps to boot. It’s insane.

UsernameIsTooLon ,

Yea Illinois internet disparity is awful. ISP prices suck and it’s usually either Comcast, AT&T, or no Internet.

Mobile coverage only gets better the closer you get to Chicago, but in the middle of Chicago it’s hit or miss and there are random dead zones everywhere in the city.
