Ecology8622 , in Android vs IOS

IOS has DNS profiles.

evanuggetpi ,

Yeah, OP has no clue if they think privacy is better on Android.

bingbong ,

Saying privacy is better on Android is literally insane, I can’t think of a less private OS (talking about the version installed by manufacturers). Even Windows has some catching up to do to be as invasive.

qjkxbmwvz , (edited )

For wifi, I was pleasantly surprised that I could set a custom DNS on iOS while still using DHCP for other settings. Can only set DNS on Android if I use manual IP (or just use Wireguard).

Edit: not true, Android can have custom DNS with DHCP, see below.

aaaaaaadjsf ,
@aaaaaaadjsf@hexbear.net avatar

I don’t think that’s true, Android has a setting called “Private DNS” that allows you to set a custom DNS while using DHCP. I’m using it right now.

qjkxbmwvz ,

Ah, TIL! I was looking for that setting in the WiFi settings, since I only wanted it on one access point (to avoid loopback NAT issues).

Apeeksiht ,

Does iOS have button to disable camera and mic access all together?

SpaceNoodle , in Nice rake

It’s a rake though

MorrisonMotel6 ,

Yeah, I think this was a poor attempt/forcing a joke.

I think they’re trying to use the words rake and hoe as synonyms (which they are; they can both mean “promiscuous woman”) but flubbed the execution.

I see the intent here, but I don’t think the image macro works for that joke. I have tried to make it work a few different ways, but I’m not coming up with anything that works well.

Famously, there is a Jeopardy! answer/question that highlighted the synonym which should be easily searchable with “rake hoe jeopardy”

essteeyou ,

Thanks for the detailed analysis. I think the joke was still funny because I didn’t look too closely at the picture and try to pick out problems with it.

Ajen ,

Agreed. Still funny, even if it’s a low-effort meme

Google has kicked up such a revolt that I find it easy to convince everyone to use Firefox. If they think they can keep abusing their userbase like this, then they are in for a surprise.

As long as this doesn’t impact Firefox, I don’t care…

Pyro ,

The issue beyond them trying to change chromium to not have it but they are trying to make it so part of websites have the “security” built in as well

scytale ,

The problem is they have the lion’s share of users, so they can force websites to adhere to their policies and those sites will stop working in FF.

baked_tea ,

Google is the source of most of the funding to Firefox. Can go 100 to 0 anytime basically

sexy_peach ,

You’re assuming that this will kill FF instantly instead of them finding new ways to fund themselves. Not saying the situation is good, but it’s not that bad.

nanoUFO ,

HellAwaits ,

Well, they’re trying to make it impact FF…

Dirk ,
@Dirk@lemmy.ml avatar

It will impact Firefox.

Mikina ,

We know how it will impact Firefox. They will be deeply concerned with WEI and extremely opposing it, but will implement it anyway because they are forced to do it.

It’s going to go exactly like this. Again.

With most competing browsers and the content industry embracing the W3C EME WEI specification, Mozilla has little choice but to implement EME WEI as well so our users can continue to access all content they want to enjoy.

And that is almost a direct quote.

StewartGilligan ,

Someone will most likely create a fork to remove this or an option to disable it will probably be baked into about:config. I don’t visit many sites that use DRM. When I do visit sites that require it, I’ll usually shift to Ungoogled Chromium or Brave.

Another one of my major fears with this change is whether Google will decide to make Chromium closed source and the implications it can have for other chromium based browsers.

Mikina ,

Someone will most likely create a fork to remove this or an option to disable it will probably be baked into about:config.

But that’s the issue - if WEI passes, EVERY webpage will be able to use DRM. So, just like you have to switch to Chromium for DRMed media content, you will now have to switch for every website that has decided to implement it. So, your bank (because google is pushing it as a security feature), Youtube, Gmail… Just like you are not able to play DRM media, you won’t be able to visit DRMed websites without WEI API supported. It’s not something you turn off.

nanoUFO ,
@nanoUFO@sh.itjust.works avatar

I’d be fine ditching youtube and gmail instead of having to use their shitty services with ads that lead to fake software that compromise your computers. Also my bank could try this, I would quickly turn into their most annoying customer also it could get to the point that unless you run a specific OS these pages won’t work and it would start being problematic legally for them. But until then I will pray everyday that the EU will take a hammer to WEI and break it’s legs.

It’s basically a relic of medieval land divisions

Peasants had small plots of land and due to road access requirements to transport goods you get these long narrow plots

Krompus ,
@Krompus@lemmy.world avatar

Quite common in rural Quebec, you see these long fields especially along rivers.

Grumpy ,

These kind of lots are fairly common in semi-rural areas in NA tbh. No incredible drama to it. They already have a house with nice lawn. But want to sell the farmland as they don’t want to farm. Sever out the house and garage, and you get weird shapes wedging into the farmland.

ArbitraryValue , in Saviours of humanity

To be fair, if I was a billionaire and I had the choice of helping ordinary people or doing something awesome, I would definitely pick to do something awesome. I respect Bill Gates for fighting malaria, but I would go for spaceships or robots.

thrawn ,

Gates has the money to do both, and more. It’s just sometimes better to let others do it instead— having your own space company means worrying about competition, contracts, and potential profitability. Meanwhile if he wanted, he could hitch a ride on any of their rockets with no effort.

Musk and Bezos also have the money to do both, but they merely elect not to. Perhaps in the future they will, like Gates, begin funneling more of their effort and wealth into altruism to improve their reputations.

ArbitraryValue ,

I’m an engineer, so my childhood fantasy wasn’t to ride on a rocket, it was to invent a rocket. I did think it would be cool to explore space, but not as a test pilot or a tourist. To be honest, I don’t think I’d go on one of those tourist flights even if it was free - I feel no urge to risk my life just to get a good view of Earth. Being a space colonist would be a different matter - then I’d get to actually use my skills to build stuff.

(The reason I think this is relevant is that a lot of these tech billionaires were originally engineers too, so I guess they also think like this.)

fluxion ,

But if it’s something awesome marketed towards saving humanity then do something actually awesome and impactful instead of distracting bullshit like hyperloops and Mars colonies on unrealistic time-frames and self-driving cars instead of public transportation. Endless talk and grand gestures when these people have the resources to really drive improvements/innovations in achievable realistic projects.

Aux ,

Mars colony is better than helping some poor souls.

hellishharlot , (edited )

By going into work sick so that I can reduce my workplace’s carbon emissions for a few days

Warfarin ,

Virtue signalling moron

hellishharlot ,

Lol it’s not virtue signaling it’s malicious compliance. My workplace has vacation and sick days pull from the same incredibly small pool. They’re also very anti work from home. So since I’ve explained the problem and was told to just take vacation time when I’m sick, I decided to just not “be sick” and explain the problem when it comes up next

Holzkohlen ,

Which is why not you, nor them should have so much money. We need to prevent idiots from doing idiot things by redistributing their wealth.

Aux ,

Then everyone will be poor and the civilization will collapse.

Tavarin ,
@Tavarin@lemmy.ca avatar

Oh yeah, cause society totally collapsed in the 1960s when wealth distribution was far more fair than today.

HiddenLayer5 ,

Also, the Indigenous peoples in North America did really well with no concept of money until the Europeans came. Some Indigenous communities have lower life expectancy today than was estimated to be before colonization.

Aux ,

Really well? Oh lol…

PersnickityPenguin ,

Well, sorta… from wikipedia:

On the east coast of North America, Indigenous peoples of the Iroquois Confederacy and Algonquian tribes, such as the Shinnecock tribe, ground beads called wampum, which were cut from the purple part of the shell of the marine bivalve Mercenaria mercenaria, more commonly known as the hard clam or quahog.[2] White beads were cut from the white part of the quahog or whelk shells. Iroquois peoples strung these shells on string in lengths, or wove them in belts.

The shell most valued by the Native American tribes of the Pacific Coast from Alaska to northwest California was Dentalium, one of several species of tusk shell or scaphopod.[citation needed] The tusk shell is naturally open at both ends, and can easily be strung on a thread. This shell money was valued by its length rather than the exact number of shells; the “ligua”, the highest denomination in their currency, was a length of about 6 inches.[citation needed]

BigNote ,

Great concentration of wealth is also highly destabilizing. We are seeing this play out before our eyes in real time right now.

Aux ,

It’s not.

GyozaPower ,

If it hasn’t collapsed with a few hundred people having more money than the rest of the entire world while also using it for selfish motives, I doubt it would collapse with a fairer distribution. But capitalism shills gotta shill

Aux ,

You know which countries are most “equal”? Poor African countries where people can’t even afford fresh water.

orphiebaby ,
@orphiebaby@lemmy.world avatar

There are many problems with this argument; but it’s 11pm and I’m sleepy, so have the first one that came to mind.

Those countries don’t have a lot of wealth per capita to begin with, so it’s not a goddamned equal comparison.

Aux ,

Sleepy or not, but equality doesn’t mean crap.

GyozaPower ,

Do you know which one was more equal? USA in the 50s and 60s, when the tax rate for rich people ranged from 70% up to 92%. A time period where regular people could also afford to live comfortably (family and house included) with a regular job.

Sorry, your arguments are just bad and only show your ignorance.

Warfarin ,

These communists will always think “it’s just never been done properly” trying to reason with them is futile

hellishharlot ,

Healthcare and homelessness were both better than the US up until the last decade of the Soviet Union. If capitalism needs it’s boom and bust cycles and we think that 40k+ people dying from joblessness every recession is acceptable surely we can afford the same level of devastation when discussing socialism right?

Aux ,

US is a craphole. Capitalism provides great healthcare literally everywhere else.

paholg ,

There’s a large range between being a billionaire and being poor, silly billy.

Aux ,

And there’s a big difference between a society which allows everyone to become a billionaire and a society which forces everyone to be poor.
