While this is true the linux kernel + Mesa package versions needs to be new enough in your distro too
this is the case for Ubuntu 22.04.02 and Ubuntu 23.04 but not for the older but still supported Ubuntu 20.04.04
How does loading up a game through steam work with that? I’m a big fan of Sway (and i3) but I don’t use them on gaming focused systems at all, so I’m curious.
Mostly just fine with i3 my experience. Sometimes I have to move the game window to a different workspace if I want to interact directly with steam, or whatever else I have in the same workspace that I launched the game in, because it keeps forcing it self exclusive/full screen. In some instances, depending on the game, that might mess things up (crash, freeze, missing/stuck mouse cursor), but most of the time it works just fine.
If Stadia did well, larian studios might have released BG3 on Linux, but when Stadia tanked, so did any idea of there being any hope of a release for general Linux.
Stadia never lead to any native ports AFAIK so this is also pretty unlikely to have happened.
For the majority of gamers on Linux this makes absolutely no difference.
In fact running a Windows game through Proton is not far from a native Linux port. All that Proton does is provide an API similar to Windows. And then the game is just executed in this context. The game binary is still x86_64 code which then runs “natively” on the CPU.
Fair point! I’ve seen quite a number of instances don’t allow discussion of stuff that’s absolutely related to games, such as how to get games (torrents, etc).
Case in point, I think there’s still a valid torrent going around with the old Loki game ports for Linux…
wine/proton is so good at this point and it’s getting better day by day. imo there is no need for native games but if some competative games like counter-strike, dota etc. gonna make little bit more performance out of native port then devs should consider native ports too.
Only Wayland correctly supports multiple refresh rates. If you use to refresh rates on X11, it will refresh the screen at the highest rate. This is likely to cause tearing on the lower refresh rate screen.
