callouscomic ,

I’ve had mine for years and I’ve never noticed either the smell or the fan noise. I don’t get what people are going on anout.

Buddahriffic ,

Maybe your fan is broken. Do you notice any wild performance variations?

Though if you’re used to loud fans by desktop standards, the Steam Deck is pretty quiet compared to that. Like yeah, it’s audible, but I’d describe it as loud as a loud exhale. Some desktop fans were referred to as jet engines from how loud they got.

jballs ,
@jballs@sh.itjust.works avatar

Pretty sure Valve issued a statement telling people not to huff their Deck exhaust. But fuck that, don’t tell me how to live my life!

Buddahriffic ,

I assume it’s like the new car smell. Pleasant or not, it’s from inhaling plastic and paint particles and other chemicals as the excesses evaporate and loose pieces come loose and become airborne.

Steam Deck is probably similar. Plastics, anti-corrosion coatings on heat sink fins, trace metals and solder, inks from the PCB, maybe the occasional ion leftover if there’s any micro-arcing.

I’d guess it lasts a long time because the cooling airflow continually erodes whatever is in its path, while new cars don’t have that continuous erosion so eventually all the particles that were going to escape do and the ones left over are more stable.

Bgugi ,

I don’t think it ever “goes away,” it just refines over time, like a fine wine.

PhlubbaDubba ,

NielsBohron ,
@NielsBohron@lemmy.world avatar

It’s actually not (just) the acidity. Pineapples and several other tropical fruits have an enzyme called papain that breaks down peptide bonds in a rather unique way, to the point that the texture of the meat can become quite off-putting if the enzyme is not used properly

Edit: acidic or not, it’s definitely best not to put any sensitive parts of your anatomy in pineapple juice

PhlubbaDubba ,

I wonder if those tenderizing properties are what make people swear by pineapple slices on pizza and burgers

What? Where? Ham isn’t supposed to be sweet.

PhlubbaDubba ,

Nah there’s ways to prepare ham to be on the sweeter side, haven’t heard of it being done that way for pizza though. Usually it’s for a deli cut or charcuterie plate.

chatokun ,

There is a whole franchise in the US called Honey Baked Ham. Americans love their sugar.

halvar , (edited ) in As a long-time user hearing YouTube wants to play extra ads when I pause a video

I’m not here to defend the soulless multi-million dollar corporation, but we don’t actually know how much money it costs for youtube to stay up. The scale they are operating on is immense, I wouldn’t be surprised, if they were still making a loss with 10 midroll ads.

sebinspace ,

They almost certainly are running at a loss. Same as Twitch, their parent companies are generally okay with it, because they also serve as pretty solid tech demos for other services they offer (YouTube runs on Google Cloud Platform, Twitch runs on Amazon Web Services), and that pays off indirectly.

Moreover, their parent companies can use them as free advertising. Google about to launch a new phone? Guess what you’re gonna see ads for!

I think the term for this is “loss leader”

orcrist ,

Big businesses are perfectly capable of releasing financial documents indicating what branches are making and losing money. If they don’t do so, there’s a good reason for it. Often that reason involves them doing things that are either shady or lying to the public about what’s actually happening.

We should not give them the benefit of the doubt in situations like this, because we would only be feeding their manipulation tactics.

halvar ,

So they could either be making money in ways they are not proud of, or there is nothing to be (not) proud of in the first place.

    Number of ads does not necessarily scale linearly to amount of income. If the ads alienate viewers, then they become worth less. I know I personally watch less when they started sometimes subjecting me to 30 seconds of unskippable ads to watch a 90 second video. Recently, I hit “skip ad” and it took me to another ad, which made me less likely. The other day whole watching a video someone told me to watch, I paused to look at some text. After a few moments it started rolling an ad while I was trying to read the text. The more this happens, the less likely I am to watch. Wild be interesting to know statistics on viewership versus more obnoxious ad behavior, but there’s likely at least some decline in per ad avenue versus number of ads crammed in the face of viewers.

    LaLuzDelSol ,

    It’s a fair point. The honest answer might be that with current technology there is simply no way to make Youtube profitable. If Google can’t pull this off I don’t think anyone can. In which case we will see a slow, but profitable death for Youtube as they make increasingly user-hostile moves, like raising prices, increasing ads, and eventually becoming increasing aggressive about deleting rarely watched videos. This will kill their user base over time of course, but they are still sitting on a massive treasure trove of content. The one thing in their favor is that storing and transmitting data gets cheaper every year. Maybe that’s what they’re holding out for.

    Neato , in car insurance
    @Neato@ttrpg.network avatar

    So best case for someone like this: don’t drive. Get other people to drive you, use public transportation, get a bike, etc. But this is probably America and that is 100% not possible everywhere. Or even most places.

    There is another option: State-Owned High-Risk Auto Insurance. These are insurance plans owned by individual states. Because US states all require auto insurance to drive a car and because driving a car is goddamn necessary in a lot of America, this exists.

    It’s VERY expensive. Like when I was looking at getting good coverage for 2 newish cars I was staring down $500/6mo. Our state’s high-risk was $2,000+. But it exists for people like in the post who are just too expensive for ordinary insurance companies to want to insure.

    TheFinn ,

    At this rate I bet it’s cheaper for them to Uber everywhere.

    Neato ,
    @Neato@ttrpg.network avatar

    No way. Even just commuting assuming $20 each way (cheap for rush hour) that’s $4,800 every 6 months. Probably 2-3 times as expensive as the high risk insurance.

    AFKBRBChocolate ,

    The post said they had been paying $500 a month ($3000 for six months) and it went up with every accident. When you factor in gas and maintenance (let alone deductibles for all their accidents), ride share services might well be cheaper.

    cymbal_king ,

    $4,800 every 6 months is only $800/month. The OP pays $500/mo on insurance, let’s say $100 on gas a month, that’s only $200/month payment on the loan for an old used car. Car ownership is expensive, but it’s probably more common for the car payment to be $500/month and insurance to be $200/month. This doesn’t even factor maintenance

    frickineh , (edited )

    Where on earth are you getting insurance for 2 cars for $500/6 months? I’m middle aged, drive a 10 year old car, and have a perfect driving record, and mine’s about $100/month. I’ve priced the same level of coverage with other companies and that’s pretty much what all of them offered.

    Eta: I’m literally asking. I have no loyalty to my current company, if I can get it cheaper, I’m out.

    Neato ,
    @Neato@ttrpg.network avatar

    That was a few years ago. But I have the same coverage and cars for $580/6mo. BTW it’s cheaper to pay all at once usually.

    But our cars are compact and subcompact about 9 & 10 years old. We carry 100/300/100. It’s GEICO is MD but it was also about the same with progressive in FL. Only one of us has a perfect record, the other is still minor and rare.

    So you may just live in an expensive state for insurance.

    frickineh ,

    Totally possible. CO has gotten pretty expensive for everything. :/ It may still be time to get some other estimates again, though.

    Lemmeenym ,

    I’m in a similar position, middle aged, clear driving history for about 15 years, car’s an '18. I pay ~$450 every 6 months with Progressive. Paying the whole amount up front gives me a good discount. If you can’t do that size payment at once you can pay with PayPal credit and it should be no interest for 6 months so you can get the discount and still pay monthly.

    frickineh , (edited )

    I need to check on whether I get a discount for paying all at once. I’m finally at a point where I could manage it but I have no idea what it would save.

    Ooh, just checked looked and nope, USAA gives me $16/month off for autopay but no pay in full discount. Lots of pretend discounts for other stuff but that just puts them around what other insurers would charge anyway. What a rip off.
