What if I need to measure the weight of my new trainers?

In stones?

SturgiesYrFase ,
@SturgiesYrFase@lemmy.ml avatar

Lived in the UK for quite some time now. Still can’t wrap my head around stone…which is kinda ironic being a Stonemason and all…

el_abuelo ,

What’s to wrap your head around? It’s 6.35kg or 12lbs.

Importantly it is only ever used to measure the weight of humans

SturgiesYrFase ,
@SturgiesYrFase@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s 14lbs, or 6.3503kg. It’s the conversion, I can work in mm/cm/m, or fractions of in/ft/yd, but despite knowing what the conversion numbers are, mental mathing it does not jive with my brain. Same with g/kg oz/lb and stone.

snugglesthefalse ,

Native UK here and I’ve never had a good reason to use stone as a unit of measurement. Kg works fine

Is that Pinhead from Dead by Daylight? That’s a pretty good design.

Edit: Wait, its not. What Hellraiser is this Pinhead from?

CableMonster , in President 360 No Scope...

Obama literally did kill an american 16 year old in yemen, so this is nothing new.

Snowclone ,

But that kid was killed by an attack marked ‘‘to whom it may concern’’, not a focused deliberate attack with his name on it. He was a casualty, not a victim of assassination.

CableMonster ,

Sure allegedly it was to kill someone else that wasnt him, but it sure seems like they just “by chance” killed the son a couple weeks after the father “on accident”.

But think of it outside of the propaganda; the president was allowed to blow up the wrong person (that happened to be an american minor in a family that had the father killed a couple weeks before) in a country that we are not at war with.

Obama literally did kill an american 16 year old

Not to be purposely irritating by being pedantic, but I think my hyper-literal thinking style is having trouble believing this. I don’t think Obama literally killed a 16 y/o. He may have given an order, approved of it, or placed someone in charge that decided to do it, but I doubt that he personally killed the 16 y/o. Is my understanding of the word “literally” incorrect in this case?

CableMonster ,

Yes you are correct, he just signed off on it, and allegedly they were trying to kill someone else. I am just pretty skeptical that this wasnt some kind of message from the CIA that they will kill whoever.

uienia ,

And here we unsurprisingly have the fascists lying that this literal right wing coup by the sc is nothing because Obama once did this completely unrelated thing.

CableMonster ,

Are you really not aware of how presidents have been doing whatever they want for decades? The supreme court didnt make any new rule, its just ruling on what has been happening forever, and you are just reading headlines and believing the propaganda.

flambonkscious , in Mood

I am way too on board with this. A few vigilante mobs would really match my feelings lately…

And I’m in the relatively untroubled waters of New Zealand!

UnrepententProcrastinator ,

Meh, seems like it would just breed new ones as long as the underlying system that prop them up isn’t fixed.

Let me put it this way, it will do exactly what it is supposed to do.

dactylotheca , in Remember when planes and hospitals had smoking sections? (Probably a lot of you do not).
@dactylotheca@suppo.fi avatar

Thank fuck this is no longer the case – the “non-smoking” sections were usually just 2nd hand smoke sections

jubilationtcornpone ,

When every restaurant and bar you went into reeked of stale cigarette smoke. Yuck.

corus_kt , in Good morning I choose creative forms of transportation.

More functional than trashy tbh, gotta give them some credit

Drusas , in Remember when planes and hospitals had smoking sections? (Probably a lot of you do not).

Smoking sections in restaurants were just as bad.

HollowNaught ,
@HollowNaught@lemmy.world avatar

I worked at a pub for a while, and had an instance where a group of friends sitting outside moved 2-3 metres away to smoke. I basically had to tell them to either stop smoking or go to the designated smoking area because they were ruining the meal of everybody sitting around

They honestly didn’t take the news well. Made me feel less bad about putting my foot down

Drusas ,

RadicalEagle , in The lion is clearly an metaphor for Persia

I’ve been reading The Screwtape Letters and having aot of fun with it. Lewis and Wormwood both know how to pull the levers to get an emotional reaction out of a person lol

thesporkeffect ,

I read Out of the Silent Planet at a fairly young age and it seemed incredible at the time. I also read the other 2 books of the trilogy and while Perelandra seemed fine, I had trouble getting through the last one.

NielsBohron ,
@NielsBohron@lemmy.world avatar

Maybe it’s because I’ve become a pretty outspoken anti-theist, but after growing up and being exposed to better theological and philosophical arguments, I’ve come to the conclusion that Lewis is an overrated hack.

And yes, the Silent Planet books were absolute torture to get through.

RadicalEagle ,

Is it possible to go too far in one direction? You’ll never know unless you find out, and there’s no guarantee you’ll ever find out.

I think in his later years Feynman did LSD and started feeling more comfortable with the potential philosophical ramifications of his work. We have to draw a line somewhere as a starting point for our understanding of reality, but it’s important to always be willing to reconsider that line. That’s what good science is all about.
