    .ml readers interpretation: Tanks (fighting for democracy) brutally killed students

    socsa ,

    Don’t lump us all in with those naive authoritarian children. Some of us believe the internet deserves a better class of communist.

    ksynwa ,
    @ksynwa@lemmygrad.ml avatar

    Do you really believe that is what happened? That tanks were used to kill protesters?

    omfgnuts ,

    CCP agent detected ( •_•)>⌐■-■

    ksynwa ,
    @ksynwa@lemmygrad.ml avatar

    I’ll be real with you I cannot believe that some people earnestly believe that protestors were mowed down by tanks. I have seen nothing in my life to even insinuate that that is what happened. There is the famous tank man video but he comes to no harm. So I don’t know where people get these ideas from. Genuinely curious.

    PipedLinkBot ,

    Here is an alternative Piped link(s): piped.video/watch?v=qq8zFLIftGk

    I don’t know where people get these ideas from. Genuinely curious.

    en.wikipedia.org/…/People's_Liberation_Army_at_th… and other accounts.

    Does that whole section quote only a single source in Chinese that I can’t read? Yes. You can believe it or not, I don’t care. Assuming that your curiosity into why people believe that protesters got mowed down by tanks is genuine, this should answer your question.

    hglman ,

    That’s a fairly weak counterpoint. It seems really meaningless who died or didn’t, the state crushed protests. A lot of ml assertion about the west is accurate but then to turn around to be blindly nationalist. Additionally, Mao was not a good leader. He likely was fairly correct in his goals, but a failure in methodology and leadership. Largely because of nationalism and the state.

    OneCardboardBox ,

    What are you even responding to? I didn’t say anything about Mao, who died vs surviving, or what people think about the West. I wasn’t even making a counterpoint, I was indulging someone’s genuine curiosity.

    ksynwa ,
    @ksynwa@lemmygrad.ml avatar

    This is a Guardian article that talks about this: www.theguardian.com/world/…/china.johngittings2

    A column of students, retreating from Tiananmen Square by a circular route, crossed the main avenue there at the exact moment that a column of tanks headed west. They scattered, but the last line of students - at least ten of them - were caught against the railings and crushed. Unlike many other killings, it was probably a real accident - if one accepts the grotesque logic that armoured vehicles had the right of way.

    wanderingmagus ,
    pivot_root ,

    Not denying it happened, but I couldn’t find any images of such. Although it won’t do much to change the minds of some people, linking or embedding the actual image would make your statement much stronger :)

    abraxas ,

    Someone already produced the “crushed bicycle” picture here with a couple crushed/mutilated bodies. It’s not the only one, but it strikes a chord of being the least NSFL while still proving the event.

    pivot_root ,

    Looks like they were posted here after my comment. Pro-CCP people are probably still going to find a way to justify it for the greater good or something like that, but at least now they can’t deny there are photos.

    abraxas ,

    I’m getting bugged for the other photo heavy now, by people telling me they can give back with photos of “the mob burning people”. Pro-CCP people don’t even consider the basically-confession and disagreement of the leader of the Communist party (which led to his long-term house-arrest).

    LittleLordLimerick ,

    No the tanks were there as part of a humanitarian mission /s

    ksynwa ,
    @ksynwa@lemmygrad.ml avatar

    Can you show any proof of tanks being lethally used anywhere during the protests?

    LittleLordLimerick ,

    No. how could I? Armored tanks are EXCLUSIVELY implements of peace, they are NEVER used lethally or to inflict harm. The Chinese military DEFINITELY brought in armored tanks for peaceful, humanitarian reasons.

    ksynwa ,
    @ksynwa@lemmygrad.ml avatar

    That’s a no then.

    LittleLordLimerick ,

    Did you cleverly infer that from the fact that I said, “no”? Or were their other subtle clues you picked up on?

    The pictures of dead, maimed, mutilated civilian corpses and crushed bicycles/cars were actually staged by the protesters to frame the kind, peaceful Chinese military, who were only there to have friendly dialogue with the protestors.

    ksynwa ,
    @ksynwa@lemmygrad.ml avatar

    The pictures of dead, maimed, mutilated civilian corpses

    Can you show me these then?

    LittleLordLimerick ,

    Yes, haha, look how fake it is

    https://www.theglobeandmail.com/resizer/hHwwE5EmYTif41erbOS8FxysrgI=/600x0/filters:quality(80):format(jpeg)/arc-anglerfish-tgam-prod-tgam.s3.amazonaws.com/public/V7V7ES2BPJG6PAG2TRTX7TRRKI.JPG

    As we all know, militaries NEVER use tanks to kill or injure people. They actually mostly use them to transport puppies and kittens, and the army’s very best huggers to spread love and joy :)

    ksynwa ,
    @ksynwa@lemmygrad.ml avatar

    There are zero “dead, maimed, mutilated civilian corpses” in that photograph.

    LittleLordLimerick ,

    Exactly, because there were no civilians maimed or killed ;) Heck, tanks literally CAN’T maim or kill people, that’s not what they’re made for. Militaries exclusively bring in tanks to help spread love and peace and good vibes.

    Actually, if you’ve seen the pictures of the military armed with rifles marching around the city that day, did you know that those were just the kind with the flag that pops out and says ‘BANG!’? Haha they were just trying to give everybody a good laugh to ease the tension. And it WORKED and NO ONE GOT HURT!

    ksynwa ,
    @ksynwa@lemmygrad.ml avatar

    You are just gonna be smug and glib. Just not gonna be able to prove that anyone got hurt by any tanks or otherwise. Thanks for that. I am gonna stop wasting my time on you now.

    LittleLordLimerick ,

    I’m not going to seriously engage with your bullshit historical revisionism any more than I would seriously engage with a holocaust denier.

    gayhitler420 ,

    Considering holocaust denial requires whole cloth fabrication of evidence and whatever people are doing itt just requires a more detailed reading of the primary sources I’d hold off on equating the two.

    It’s easy to step in the double genocide hole if you’re not looking out for it.

    abraxas ,

    So what are the 2 (or more) bodies lying on and around the bicycles? Including the one in the back that seems to be missing a head?

    wanderingmagus ,
    ksynwa ,
    @ksynwa@lemmygrad.ml avatar

    There are no tanks in the pictures. Nor the bodies look like they have been harmed by tanks. This is what I asked in the beginning:

    Can you show any proof of tanks being lethally used anywhere during the protests?

    abraxas ,

    And this isn’t even the worst one. There is one that looks vaguely similar but with ALL bodies instead of bicycles, so NSFL I committed I would never repost it anywhere.

    LittleLordLimerick ,

    Yeah, I actually didn’t want to pull up the worst ones because I was on a work computer.

    American_Communist22 ,

    you aren’t this dumb

    abraxas ,

    I mean, there is that photo of a bunch of crushed human bodies under tank treads that nobody likes to reference.

    As it’s not NSFL, I’m not posting. After seeing that image, I lost all doubt that the massacre happened exactly as we know.

    And no, I don’t intend this to convince you. I don’t think seeing the photo would convince you either.

    American_Communist22 ,
    @American_Communist22@lemmygrad.ml avatar

    where, show me this photo

    I can give you ones of mobs burning random people alive on the street

    abraxas ,

    No, sorry. As I said a few times, I don’t keep a file of NSFL grotesque photos like that. If the photos already posted in this thread aren’t enough, my adding the other won’t be. If you can’t convince them with the mountains of clear and simple evidence, you can’t convince Holocaust Deniers, Flat Earthers, or Tienanmen Square deniers with any evidence no matter how disgusting.

    Maybe I’m just tired of hearing of these lies, I know china didn’t do it, and I know the story is a myth concocted from bits of reality and western media embellishing and skewing details. I’m really just trying to get a rise out of ya’ll.

    But how are we fascists? You think we are lying at all hours even when you aren’t looking? It would be easier to just be a fascist if that was the truth. Those movements already exist: Nazbols, MAGA communists, and the like. Why aren’t we them? Why do we always separate ourselves and constantly denounce them? Why do we go through what would be a ridiculous amount of effort to pretend to be communists? Pretend to be leftists? This is a ridiculous assertion in every way!

    I dare you to spend 5 minutes on hexbear, minutes not trying to hate us, and just look around. I may be scum yes, but I don’t think they are, far from it in fact. Maybe you’ll see that, or you’ll just keep being the way you are:

    in many cases, it’s the only language that all participants in the conversation understand, not the only one for each.

    but to be honest, if I could exchange my knowledge of my native language with the same amount of experience with something else (e.g. programming, math, etc.) I might take that deal (after moving to a primarily english speaking country of course).

    gibbosus ,

    Would you really? (: Language not only is everywhere, but also determines your ability to express your thoughs and moreso also shapes them, as your conciousness is deeply comnected with language. Your whole worldview is heavily intertwined with it.

    I mostly realize this, when I do have to use another language to formulate my thoughs. It just feels like constantly having a giant headache. Just like right now :} I wouldn’t for anything trade the skills in my native language.

    lemmonade ,

    not sure if I would, but I will definitely not rule that out. I think almost anything you learn changes how you think and can express your thoughts, although language does it in a more direct way.

    I love this chart. Because pasteurization is a result of capitalism, not food safety. The EU doesn’t pasteurize their eggs because their chickens are vaccinated against salmonella. The USA does not vaccinate their chickens because it would hurt Big Agriculture and all their egg pasteurizing factories.

    We have to pasteurize milk because of the awful conditions of factory farming - where disease is rampant. Again, this is a result of capitalism. And again, you can see drastic difference in the products in the EU vs the USA. Some EU cheeses are required, by law, to use raw milk. It’s safe there.

    Excrubulent ,
    @Excrubulent@slrpnk.net avatar

    My biggest issue with this is the flight part - it’s a counterintuitive explanation that doesn’t really explain how to make the flight work. It’s not technically wrong, and if you trace that cross-section you will get a working aerofoil. However, you can’t make the Wright Flyer on that explanation, or in fact any of the early aeroplanes that were constructed with simple fabric stretched between wooden frames.

    A far more useful and intuitive explanation is that planes fly by flow-turning, basically the interaction between the aerofoil and the air turns the air in one direction, which pushes the aerofoil in the other. This also means the air below will end up slower than the air on top, which will create a pressure differential. Either of these methods can completely describe how flight works.

    Also, a plane isn’t just two aerofoils attached to a central body. Early planes were at least biplanes, and you need horizontal and vertical stabilisers to have full control. You need flaps that give you pitch, yaw and roll, and you need the centre-of-mass - the point where it balances - to be in front of the centre of pressure. That means you need the stabilisers to be at the back to keep the plane stable like a dart.

    This isn’t just a “well akshually”, although it sort of is. If you tried to follow the advice as-written and didn’t know this, there’s a good chance you’d end up on the long list of people killed by their own inventions. Actually, I suspect most of these explanations give you just enough information to kill yourself but not really enough to actually make any of them work from first principles.

    HellAwaits , in incredible

    They would probably kill you thinking you’re into witchcraft or something.

    Because your immune system isn’t used to being constantly bombarded with those pathogens.

    Antibiotics are the only thing that keep most modern day people alive. That and sanitation didn’t really exist back then.

    aidan ,

    IIRC you’d either already have been exposed to the more deadly diseases but have immunity because of widespread exposure, inherited immunity, and being exposed to less dangerous forms that evolved- or in many cases having likely been immunized as a child. As for bacterial infections yea- but people of that time would be at just as much risk. But, they’d be at a lot more risk of viruses from you because they wouldn’t have those immunity factors.
