llii ,

What the fuck, you can’t even hear anything. How could there be a shot from the car without a lout sound?

Balex ,

In his partners body cam video you can hear a sound before he starts shooting. Still don’t know how you would mistake that for a gunshot, but there was at least a sound 🤷

Riven ,
@Riven@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Iirc the main dude is a vet with ptsd. If my partner told me he’s hit and started shooting in a direction i would at the very least also take cover and try and figure out the situation. They had a suspect in the car so they both freaked and thought the suspect was shooting at them. Not to excuse them, and fuck whoever allowed a ptsd vet to have a job that uses a gun. He should have had more resources to help him with his ptsd and to find alternative jobs that maybe don’t trigger it like that. Cops are trained to always be on edge over here because they never know who might have a gun, it’s stupid he was allowed in.

Crikeste ,

And people use his PTSD as an excuse. Dumb fuck veteran who is scared of being killed the way he killed others opens fire in a community and is lucky he didn’t murder an innocent person.

Piece of shit veteran dumb fucks. Take your PTSD to the psych ward, murderer.

Corkyskog ,

Military PTSD should disqualify you from being an armed cop. Go get a job that’s not life and death.

antimidas ,

It’s safe enough, in the Finnish army we occasionally get the tent heater red hot, and as long as nothing flammable touches it or is too close, it’s fine. It will radiate heat quite well when that hot, but won’t be anywhere close to dangerous if you know what you’re doing. In the tent we of course have some water nearby to extinguish the possible flames but still.

You basically need to have it glowing red if you’re to keep the tent warm in -15 °C or lower. - 30°C needs something closely resembling the picture posted.

Here’s an example, unfortunately hosted on Reddit www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.re…

SlothMama ,

I need your to consult on Frostpunk 2. The first game insists people can survive -140° C and that’s like, -220° F.

antimidas , (edited )

Well, the example was with a tent which is a single layer of cotton between you and the environment, and by no means resembles anything even remotely insulated. That’s why it needs a relatively powerful heater to stay comfortably warm. In normal use you have quite a lot of control over the temperature of the heater, mainly with the size and amount of firewood -> effective surface area of the fire.

For static buildings the situation is different, with enough insulation you can get by with almost no heating. Zero-energy building is a thing in Finland as well, and although it has its challenges, it’s still possible to keep your home warm with only your body heat in e.g. -40. The main difficulty you’ll encounter there is getting rid of the moisture in air, since being that energy-efficient will require having your home almost fully enclosed. You’ll also need to be careful to properly limit the moisture getting out from the house, as the dew point will be inside the insulation and any moisture getting out will condense inside, eventually leading to mold.

I haven’t actually reached the end game in Frostpunk 1, but at a glance it would require some efficiency improvements and better insulation – and given enough insulation and heating anything is possible. If your people are sleeping under the sky hugging the generator, I’d assume you won’t get past the end game. A real-world example that somewhat resembles the Frostpunk world would be people living in Yakutsk, Russia, where they have more of a brute-force approach to the -60 °C temperatures – just burn enough gas to keep your log cabin warm. Surviving outside at those temperatures without protective equipment would be difficult though, especially since most materials won’t stay flexible at -120 °C or -140 °C. You’d find it pretty difficult to move around.

Edit: But also, a mandatory “don’t quote me on this”, as building is my hobby, not my job. I’ve some knowledge, and some experience, but by no means am I a professional.

Kusimulkku ,

You make it red hot because you don’t want to crawl constantly back into the tent. And you never, ever want the fire to go out, because of all the shit you’d get for it. Mansikka for life

Ubisoft has released many games that require constant Internet access the past decade and then just shutting off the servers making the game completely unplayable. This just happened to The Crew last month. This will happen to:

  1. The Crew 2
  2. The Crew Motorfest
  3. Steep
  4. Riders Republic
  5. Star Trek Bridge Crew
  6. Skull & Bones (A AAAA game)
  7. Newer versions of Just Dance
  8. Newer versions of Rocksmith

And more…

Pirating doesn’t solve the game being completely unplayable when UbiSoft decides to shut down the servers.

The Crew could be played all the way through as a single player game. It made no sense for a constant Internet connection. The Crew’s credit screen for the final version of the game lasts over 45 minutes. Thousands of employees across the entire world worked on that game and now it is just gone with only gameplay videos being the only record of existence.

Johanno ,

Pirating doesn’t solve it, but It fixes the problem at hand for now. The next thing would be sth. Like the internet archive to legally archive it when ubisoft decides to delete it from their servers.

Reddfugee42 ,

Some solutions to some problems are imperfect

Oh ok. Thanks.

merthyr1831 ,

If Ubisoft kept the crew (and others) on your account post-shutdown, people could create community servers much like they have for Titanfall and others.

Piracy allows software to be controlled by users, not publishers, in a way that if there was legitimate support for it people can still reverse engineer these games to support them.

Gran Turismo 4, for example, can only be modded and given online functionality through piracy (mods require a version of the game used as a beta test for some features so it wasn’t widely sold).

Piracy isn’t the only tool in maintaining discontinued games, but it’s fundamental to people who may want to develop alternative servers for them.

Lies. You wouldn’t buy a PC with Nvidia nonsense just to install Linux.

TootSweet ,

Nvidia used to be the easy way to go. The open-source Nouveau driver lacked functionality. The official Nvidia driver was proprietary but worked well. (Though the Radeon drivers were proprietary at the time too. And Intel graphics hardware was always poor.)

Wild how things turn around.

Senseless , (edited )

Serious question because I’m in the same situation of switching to LM, having a nvidia GPU. Your talking in past tense… so nouveau drivers are actually useful now? Talking HDR, Gsync and DLSS

Corr ,

You’ll want the nvidia drivers. Nouveau is now usable with AMD cards I think, I’m on nvidia so I’m not 100% sure on that
