What are tankies?

Authoritarian-Communists

Aux ,

So… All communists.

PrivateNoob ,

As I recall everyone calls communists as tankies. For example people, who prefer maoism, that cuban communism and other ones I guess.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Not all communists are Tankies. The ones who love authoritarian oppressors like Xi and Kim are the Tankies.

alvvayson ,

Indeed. Tankies preferred method of spreading communism is by sending a battlegroup of tanks to “liberate” civilians in Tiannanmen square, Ukraine, Afghanistan or Hungary.

Hence the name, tankie.

EnglishMobster ,
@EnglishMobster@kbin.social avatar

There is a distinction between Communists and tankies.

Tankies are a subset of Communists. Specifically, tankies have rejected Marx in favor of authoritarianism, power for power's sake. "Everyone is equal, and some people are more equal than others" sort of thinking. They want to show anyone who doesn't agree with them the barrel of a gun.

The term came from when the Soviets invaded Hungary in order to prevent popular reforms. But I think a better example of what tankies are like (and how they differ from communists) is looking at Czechoslovakia.

Czechoslovakia was a communist country already, but they were doing reforms that would help the average worker and promote equality within the country. The plan was to transition away from a single-party state within Czechoslovakia and towards a form of democratic socialism, where the parties still held core communist ideas but no one figure could wield influence (in line with what Marx expected).

The Soviets saw this as a threat. Their model of a one-party authoritarian state where the secret police dominate everything and the proletariat have no rights is the one they wanted to push everywhere. So they invaded Czechoslovakia and sent tanks into the country.

Later, the Chinese Communist Party sent tanks in to crush peaceful protestors who were asking for human rights and democracy within the proletariat. The protesters were literally turned into jelly by the tanks and washed down into the gutters.

Tankies support these atrocities. They say that a one-party authoritarian state is the only way to do things. Don't let them trick you into thinking they're the only true Communists - tankies want an upper class and a lower class, just like capitalists do. The distinction is that to tankies, the upper class are the party elite, the ones who do and say what they're told. The lower class are the people they don't like, or those who are unlucky enough not to have friends in high places.

Tankies are absolute scum. Lemmy's founders are tankies, Lemmygrad and Lemmy.ml both push tankie politics (Lemmy.ml is more subtle about it, but does enforce it via their moderation policy), and now Hexbear is coming over to Lemmy in order to complete the tankie trifecta.

I hate that this place is infested with tankies. I don't mind communists - I'm pretty left-leaning myself - but tankies are not true communists, and they never can be unless they fundamentally rethink their views about equality and freedom.

GreenMario ,

This is why I pretty much consider Tankies “right wing fascists” alongside conservatives. They have the exact same goals in mind after all the left/right distinction is a distraction.

PrivateNoob ,

Yeah I knew that communism != tankies, I just felt like most of users use this term as that. Feeling kinda ashamed of myself, that I forgot the origin of tankie, because I’m hungarian. Thanks for the clarification!

S13Ni ,

Amen, just unsubbed so many communities due to too much tankie shit getting on my feed.

I am also very left leaning, but so frustrated with the state of left, with so many subdivisions of leftist still stuck on 20th century, tankies being the worst example.

kool_newt ,

HardlightCereal ,

So what you have to know about anarchy is that the vast, vast majority of unjust hierarchies are social constructs. Patriarchy, gender binary, whiteness, the state, neuronormativism, sanity, capitalism, religion.

These all exist in the mind. So to know the mind and understand it is to know hierarchy and to know anarchy. To be able to change your thoughts and those of others is to be capable of praxis. Materialism alone cannot create anarchy. Socialism, yes. But not communism. Communism comes from the power to destroy the shackles and weapons of the mind. This is chaotic anarchy, the anarchism of the psychonaut.

i am going to give a Historically correct answer:

during the cold war, there was a peaceful uprising in the soviets puppet states (mainly hungary i believe).
the soviets decided the way to deal with these people was to send in tanks and slaughter the peacefully protesting civilians

everyone that was excusing the soviets use of Tanks against Civilians was dubbed a "tankie"

Lanfordr , to mildlyinfuriating in higher wages for the servers... by the customers. Fnbs

The crazy thing is, Los Angeles’ minimum wage is already 16.78, and restaurants are required to pay servers at least minimum wage in California. None of this lower minimum for tipped workers. So they are adding at least 18% to that, unless the 18% service fee brings their workers up to minimum wage, which is dishonest, but wouldn’t put it past a restaurant to do. After all that, they have the gall to sti ask for a tip!?! It’s beyond bs.

jcit878 ,

if the waiter gets all the 18% (lol) thats more than an hours wage for a table. and then tip expected on top.

Sorry, the whole system over there is just bonkers. drop the tips and charges and just pay fair and be done with it. that actually seems like a semi reasonable minimum wage too tbh, although without any tipping could go a few dollars higher

You know what, I’m going to go the opposite of this. Why in the hell are you dining out and paying THAT much to dine out? Here I am griping because recently I paid $12.83 because a chinese buffet usually charges me $11.76 but then I see receipts like this shit and realize that maybe I am better off.

If I was paying triple digits for food, I’d be making damn sure it had better be the best damn tasting food served to me or I wouldn’t leave until it was served to me.

God, people need to cook more. You can gather so many ingredients for the amount you’re paying and have several weeks of meals for the month.

hglman ,

You got it chef; no one gets one over on you.

aesthelete ,

Go to a high COL city, and you’ll be paying $50 or more for your Chinese buffet.

MyNameIsIgglePiggle ,

In Aus these days if I go to the supermarket to buy food for dinner, just one meal for 5 people, I am not walking out of there spending less that $80

aesthelete ,

Yeah I mean the supermarket isn’t a bargain either.

The only real “deals” I get nowadays are from Costco, and you still wind up spending multiple hundreds of dollars you just get more for your money that way.

StinkyFinger ,

Maybe you would. I’ll be cooking rice at home.

aesthelete ,

I wouldn’t actually. I don’t like buffets.

imgonnatrythis ,
chris2112 ,

OP said LA so while these numbers are a little high they’re not out of the ordinary for a high CoL American city. I live near NYC and prices at fairly mainstream not particularly upscale restaurants and Manhattan are similar to this. You really shouldn’t have something kike SSHD open to the world, that’s just an unnecessary atrack surface. Instead, run a VPN on the server (or even one for a network if you have several servers on one subnet), connect to that then ssh to your server. The advantage is that a well setup VPN simply won’t respond to an invalid connection, and to an attacker, looks just like the firewall dropping the packet. Wireguard is good for this, and easy to configure. OpenVPN is pretty solid too.

While we are coming off the tail of Def Con where there where a plethora or small talks and live examples of taking advantage and abusing just this.

I don’t understand your comment, what you are saying. Could you elaborate a bit, please? I’m interested why it’s a bad idea what previous comment suggested.

Of course I can dig into DefCon videos and probably would do if needed, but perhaps you know what exactly the issue is

MaggiWuerze ,

The first this means the comment he answered to and the second one means ssh being used as an attack surface, being described in defCon talks

JDubbleu ,

I usually just run a ZeroTier client on my Pi connected to a private P2P network to solve this issue, and then have ProtonVPN over Wireguard for all internet traffic in and out of the Pi.

I get why people do it, but man do I hate the glorification of Sherman when it comes to addressing Confederates southern conservatives.

He used the same tactics that he used against the Confederacy against the Native Americans, to vile ends.

Remember he thought the war was wasteful.

Because…what white man would live in the swamps of the Seminole, and the US Army lacked clear goals.

shrug

Sherman, was pro union and anti confederacy. It was that simple—to own slaves, or not, was not his concern.

There is no glory in war; Sherman’s own words say it often…the ACW was the waste of poor young American men, dying in fields because wealthy plantation owners would have it so.

This was the unforgivable sin in Sherman’s eyes, to inflame the passions of our youth, to no end.

Why glorify Sherman? He slept, rode, and ate, as his soldiers did. To know the capability of his army, he did not separate himself, unlike his peers.

He suffered ill health, mental breakdowns, familial loss, often on the verge of quitting — and yet, saw it to the end, despite the death and senseless carnage.
