I agree with this sentiment. Steam notably falls into the third category, while otherwise being pretty good.
But I’m quite disgusted now seeing an image of a Yubikey for the first time. I’ve heard so many good things about them that it’s a major disappointment to see now that they use that awful noncomplaint shape of USB plug.
There are two very important reasons for the metal shield around USB plugs: 1. For ESD protection, and 2. to hold the receptacle’s tongue in place and prevent it from bending away and losing contact. Every USB device I’ve owned that was a flat plug (like this Yubikey image in this post) has within a month deformed the USB receptacle it’s plugged into to the point that the device no longer works in that port. Compliant USB devices still work in that port’s deformed receptacle, because they have a correct metal shield that bends the tongue back into the correct position.
It is actually possible to use Aegis for Steam, that’s what I do. It’s a pain to setup if you’re not rooted (I think you need to use an Android emulator on a computer and then export the Aegis DB to reimport it on your mobile IIRC) but it’s possible. No problems with yubikeys or the receptacle they are plugged into yet.. no idea what you do while these sticks are plugged in.. doesnt seem like a major concern per the reviews
It is kind of annoying that Steam doesn’t enable the usage of third-party OTP apps. To be fair, when they first implemented the feature, that wasn’t widely used and plenty of websites only enabled the use of one specific OTP app like Authy or Google Authenticator. They recently added a QR code login feature, which makes sense, but that still shouldn’t stop them from enabling MFA via third party OTP apps.
Some third party apps allow you to import your Steam OTP, such as Gnome Authenticator
However to obtain it in the first place you need to either use SteamDesktopAuthenticator (GitHub), an android emulator on your PC, or a rooted device to export your key…
It also breaks your ability to do some actions with steam such as changing your email address because god forbid you enter the TOTP instead of pressing accept or something in the app
This is currently me, wanting to update my email but not wanting to go through the hassle of changing my authenticator back to my steam app then re exporting the key to put it back in Bitwarden.
So frustrating that they have to be ✨special✨ with their authenticator algorithm AND ALSO require the app for people who have reverse engineered it.
I’ve had my ubikey fido2 token knocking around on my keychain for about 7 years now. Scratched and beaten, works perfectly and never had a port damaged, it doesn’t put enough pressure on it.
It absolutely is, the issue is that most mfa apps spit out 6 character outputs, while Steam requires 5. They’d need to implement the alternative algorithm, but 1password for instance flat out refuses since it’s non standard.

I just pointed out that it’s a specific term used to refer to female children, thus it makes sense that search engines are using it to weed out unwanted searches for child porn. It’s a reasonable step to take on their part, and absolutely doesn’t affect anyone that isn’t looking for CSM. Just use any other word for women. Hell, there are plenty of other derogatory words for women you can use that will still get you tons of results just in case denigrating women is an important part of your searching process.

It’s a ridiculous argument, based on some “scientific” basis of a word that doesn’t hold up in everyday speech and seems to stem entirely from Americans.
We use male/female all the time in Australia, it’s not an issue and doesn’t carry negative social connotations. Referring to a group of women as females sounds grammatically wrong, but that’s about it.
I don’t think that’s universally true. Most parts of Australia I’ve been to have the same nuance of “females” often being used by assholes in a demeaning way and seen as somewhat dehumanising in some contexts (but not all).
I’ve never seen “outrage” about it, mostly annoyance and eye rolling. It’s douchey at best. It’s usually the least respectful people (primarily men/teenage boys, but not exclusively), usually using the term in a derogatory or dismissive way against women, and often dehumanizing or objectifying them. It’s also similar to referring to black people as “blacks”. It’s just reductive, like that’s the defining feature of them. That may not be fair. May not be how you use it. But that is the connotation of using the term in that way.
It’s because the general consensus among progressives is that it’s typically used by an asshole in poor context. Nobody cares if it’s being used respectfully. I am not activating that the opinion is correct either way.
Many disagree with me but whenever someone says the word female shouldn’t be used I always refer back to using woman to define gender and female to define sex. Is it the best way to think of it; maybe not, but that’s how I always did.
For me “females” makes it feel like treating them as any other animal. While not factually incorrect, the term fails completely to convey the fact that my feelings towards human girls are substantially greater than my feelings towards any other animal.

The only reason I stopped using “girl” as a descriptor was because I stopped using “boy”. And I stopped using “boy” because I learned white bigots use the word in a derogatory and demeaning way against black men, and i didn’t want to accidentally demean a friend or coworker.
I likely would eventually have stopped using “girl” as I began to understand more about relative power dynamics and the implications of using diminutive language on adults. That being said, when you grow up hearing language used a certain way, you didn’t really think about it’s use as an adult until someone brings it to your attention.
Or at least that’s my experience. But I generally think the best of people until contrary evidence presents itself. Like if they use blatant bigoted speech, or drive on the same road I’m driving on. Then I know they’re hateful, awful people that should be eliminated from the gene pool.
