Yup. What YouTube doesn’t understand is that we’ve got ** other stuff to do.** I’ve got books to read, games to play, music to listen to. None of which requires YouTube.

Got_Bent ,

I’ve found myself repatronizing half priced books lately. I’ve gone through five books since mid May.

I was a voracious reader before mobile devices existed.

I’d forgotten just how much more satisfying it is to let yourself go in a good story rather than bicker about minutiae with countless strangers all day every day.

(Sidenote: I’ve been looking up reviews for the books I’ve read and am surprised to find indignation at sexual scenes in novels. Like, if you’ve ever read a John Irving novel in your life, and you’re surprised and offended that the next one has sex in it, you should maybe reconsider your chosen career path)

rwhitisissle , (edited )

surprised to find indignation at sexual scenes in novels

To quote Ryan Letourneau, “Gen Z is Puritanpilled.” Seriously, I’ve found post-millennial generations to be extremely prudish. I think part of it has to do with the fact that as the internet evolved and became mainstream (and more profitable by catering to general audiences), the edgy or adult content became more ghetoized and quarantined over time. Used to be you’d go to reddit and there’d be porn on the front page. There’s like a 0% change of finding something NSFW on the front page there now. As such, younger people who grew up with the modern incarnation of the internet have a very different perspective on sexual content than those of us who grew up with a more “wild west” style internet where porn was just something that lived alongside the more mundane content. The side-effect of this is also that content like the John Irving novels you’re talking about are treated as if they’re grotesque for presenting sex as just another part of people’s lives - something that you’re not supposed to be shy about or ashamed of. Which is, uh…concerning, for a number of reasons. Other theories are that the world in which we live has eroded platonic relationships among young people and that they want to only see platonic friendships among characters, as that’s the vicarious experience they most desire.

voracitude , (edited ) to mildlyinfuriating in Best Buy Membership "discount"

Edit: yeah, I am derp, the protection plan is part of the cart and is what makes the “member” price higher without the discount. Leaving my original response in case anyone doesn’t know what would be illegal, if it was actually happening here

~~This is, in fact, actively illegal. Companies cannot advertise a “sale price” under a number of circumstances, such as when the price is the same absent the sale (e.g. there’s no actual discount) or when the price was artificially raised just prior to the “sale”: …westlaw.com/…/Beware-of-the-Sale-Complying-with-…

In this case, the “regular” or non-member price was raised precisely 0 seconds before applying the uh… “discount”. Pretty cut-and-dry violation by any metric.

unmagical ,

They gave him a protection plan. The price of the item didn’t change.

ji17br ,

And free shipping. I think he would have been charged for delivery on the non-member order. Probably why he didn’t add it.

Unless the item he is buying is one of the “exclusive offers”, then I don’t really see the issue.

BugleFingers ,

Well its really hard to say tbh. Delivery isn’t available in the top section but has a different area code. On the bottom section it’s a different area code but has delivery as an option. Without checking if the top has free delivery without membership when the area code is fixed there’s no way to tell. Some places do offer free shipping on cart values over whatever designation they set.

Looks like they got a free protection plan though

skuzz ,

Best Buy and most retailers offer free shipping on items $100 and above most of the time. You just don’t see that until checkout. No special plan needed. It’s to compete with the likes of Amazon.

voracitude ,

That’s true, I didn’t notice that it was part of the cart with a (discounted) price. It looked like an optional extra that could be added. Makes the whole thing a nothingburger. Yet again, a derp is me - at least I have a few dozen friends in the same boat this time!

pivot_root , (edited )

The funny part is that it wouldn’t even work.

If the plug was on a GFCI outlet, it would trip once neutral and hot are shorted.

If it wasn’t on a GFCI outlet, it would be an inefficient water heater. Current is inversely proportional to resistance, and the inch of tap water between both conductors has a significantly lower resistance than the human sitting at the other side of the tub. At American voltages of 110V, the worst thing that will probably happen is the wires heat up from the current passing through them. Now, if it only had the live wire exposed and you had a metal tub, that might be a different story…

Rivalarrival ,

You assume the neutral wire is present and connected to the neutral prong, as it is in typical appliances. If I were to make this ducky, I wouldn’t connect anything to the neutral or ground prongs in the plug. Indeed, I’d connect all three wires in the cord to the hot prong.

pivot_root ,

That is my first assumption, yeah. I did note at the end if they intentionally didn’t connect neutral and ground and it was a metal tub, that would work

nilloc ,

It’s got a British plug so it’s at least 200 volts.

But yeah, probably ok if the water isn’t too salty and you stay away from touching the electrodes.

I’m still not getting in with one though. At over 6 feet, I take up the whole tub + most of the time anyway.

Rivalarrival ,

But yeah, probably ok if the water isn’t too salty

If you’re going to be passing a current through your bath water, you would want the bath water to be as conductive as possible. You don’t want the salt water in your body to be the path of least resistance. You want the current to flow around you, not through you.

Norgur , to funny in The US has so much space

If you are going to gobble up that much space for yourselves on this planet that we all share, stop fucking around and put it to good use!

Manifest fucking destiny/s

AFKBRBChocolate ,

The housing crisis has zero to do with available space, except that in the hubs of industry, like silicon valley, there are more people wanting to live there than there’s space. That’s not true across the country.

But no one is going to build a house in the middle of nowhere to help with housing because (a) hardly anyone wants to live in the middle of nowhere, away from all the jobs, and (b) the people building housing are motivated to get as much money as they can.

We as a society could 100% solve the housing crisis, but it involves socialism, not capitalism, which a lot of Americans still have a problem with. The solution isn’t constrained by space, which the US has tons of.

themeatbridge ,

It wouldn’t even be that much socialism. Just a smidgen of housing regulations and zoning. Limit corporate ownership and rental profiteering, like any responsible capitalist democracy should with any industry.

The problem is that an entire generation of homeowners wanted to ride the wave of residential deregulation like a fly on a windshield. Wheeee look at our property values skyrocket! We can retire on the capital gains alone! Fuck the next generation, what did they ever do for us?

dharmacurious ,

I’m all for the socialism, but could we also get the homestead act back? Free land and a grant to build a house if we’re willing to go rural as fuck and grow our own food. Maybe combine with eco friendly stuff. Have to build a cob house, must use ecologically safe farming techniques.

moon ,

What makes you think lack of space is the issue??

Norgur ,
@Norgur@fedia.io avatar

Nothing. I didn't say it was, did I? I just said that the US has an awful lot of space on this planet that is home to all of us and still can't manage to house people.

Come to think of it, I said everything besides space was the issue, didn't I?

jaspersgroove ,

Are you suggesting that more people should live in Texas? I don’t think this is the humanitarian viewpoint that you seem to think it is lol.

Norgur ,
@Norgur@fedia.io avatar

I'm saying that people should live in geographic place that is Texas, not necessarily in the political construct that is Texas. Because I wouldn't want to live in the latter either.

jaspersgroove , (edited )

I don’t even know if I agree with that, it’s mostly desert or at the very least incredibly arid. It’ll end up being even worse than Southern California or Nevada, massive amounts of people pulling water from an aquifer too small to sustain them.

People need to live in areas that have the resources to support them.
