Perfect Dark, Goldeneye, Conker’s, Mario 64, Mario Kart, Mario Party, just so many bangers to list off. I loved the Nintendo 64.

Also thank you for the reply. I finally got to test out this instance to make sure it’s working properly. I appreciate it.

Man, that was top tier – You’d get to play games way better than your current console had and it all came in this fancy case… I played through most of Megaman Legends with my brother in one life in one weekend because we didn’t have a memory card!

aidan OP ,

Thanks for the sympathy- my mom hasn’t been very emotionally stable for my whole life. She’s not perfect and sometimes I think she’s wrong, but I know she loves and cares about me

redsol2 ,

I read a book called Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents. My mom is similar, and it gave me a lot of insight into why she behaves the way she does, and how I may have developed unhealthy coping mechanisms as a result. Highly recommend.

aidan OP ,

I’ll look at it- my mom is one of the people I care about most so it’s hard for me to criticize her. But, I also understand sometimes she doesn’t act in a supportive way

entropicdrift ,
@entropicdrift@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

You should at least recognize that you’re holding a double standard here: she’s able to criticize you all she wants yet you know she cares and loves you, but it’s hard for you to criticize her because you care.

That kind of double standard is an unhealthy dynamic that hurts both of you and your relationship with each other. And don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it was either of your intent for it to be that way, but it has ended up that way regardless of best efforts.

Contramuffin ,

Oh, just because someone is abusive or unsupportive doesn’t mean that they don’t love you. It just means that their interactions aren’t healthy for you and you need to establish boundaries.

Regardless, I hope that you’re doing well. I don’t know what your project is, but I can certainly tell you that it’s much more impressive than anything I’ve made

aidan OP ,

That’s true, but I feel like the internet is quick to brand people having moments of failure as abusive. Nobody is perfect, and I can’t expect my parents to be perfect. Imo, calling my mom abusive is far too extreme.

entropicdrift ,
@entropicdrift@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Well, and anybody can say or do things that are abusive.

Different people have different levels of tolerance for abusive behavior. The question is, when does it go from, “a person prone to occasional abusive bullshit” to “a person in the habit of committing acts of abuse”?

It’s a lot like addiction in the sense that it’s a sliding scale, but people largely outside of it will freely brand the slightest hint as a full blown catastrophe.

Sivaru ,

Yes, in this world there is no one who wants what is good for you more than your parents. Many people forget that, if your parents have problems, you need to take care of them.

bleph ,

I don’t agree with this in all cases.

True, parents usually have a deeply ingrained emotional need to protect and nurture their children but:

  • Not all parents do. Narcissists have children all the time. When they do, they cloak their emotional vampirism in ‘love’ like they do in all relationships.
  • Even parents with the best intentions have to work HARD not to pass on their generational traumas, abuses, and bad habits.
  • Only the child can truly know what will fulfill them as a person. Parents often substitute what they wanted for their younger selves for the child’s best interest.

For those still thinking I have no idea what I am talking about and you and your parents are different… please look into “enmeshment” for your own sake

Sivaru ,

I agree with you on the first one. There are fathers who do not deserve to be called fathers, and they should be punished. (It is too complicated to discuss in a paragraph, each case alone, and the future effects on the child…). We live in a sick society. In the case of the OP, it is simple,this is not necessary, and his only task is to take care of his father and not repeat the mistakes of his fathers in the future to break the cycle. But I don’t agree with the last one, children don’t know exactly what they want (we adults don’t know what we want sometimes let alone children) but parents should respect their opinions and guide them and teach them how to make the right decision instead of making the decision for them. Have a good day.

What’s the recourse? Do we start feeding our dogs homemade dog food instead?

MiddleWeigh ,
@MiddleWeigh@lemmy.world avatar

Yea pretty much. As much as I mull over solutions it always comes back to returning to our roots, which happens to be impossible at this point with the current population crisis. I’d imagine redistributing the wealth to alleviate these things would be extremely hard, would probly take a war to get going, or start multiple little wars in the process. It’s really pretty bad. Worse than people like to think. I dont know where we go from here. That’s part of the problem and why we maintain the status quo.

For now you can probly start approximating what is in that food with your scraps, like back in the day. I don’t really know and I hate not knowing shit lol. (Why I’m here)

instamat ,

We have to go full Star Trek and remove profit and personal gain as the motive for doing everything. In the meantime I guess it’s time to start reading up on what a dog’s diet should be.

MiddleWeigh ,
@MiddleWeigh@lemmy.world avatar

Haha i agree, but getting there is the hard part. Theres so much infrastructure built up around a messed up system that all we can do is slowly change and crawl towards our ultimate goals.

I’d be curious to see someones experience on this, and get the lowdown on if it’s cheaper and more efficient, and if so, how much money they saved etc.

Max_P , to linux_gaming in Is there a way to improve cpu performance with wine/proton?
@Max_P@lemmy.max-p.me avatar

For a CPU benchmark like this, something is definitely weird because wine shouldn’t be translating anything. I wonder if the benchmark might be doing weird things with the Windows API.

That sounds like you’re hitting an edge case and it might not be representative of the actual performance you can expect out of Wine.

Have you tried other benchmarks?

Waffelson OP ,

No

I’m thinking of testing Cinebench

Are there any other tests I could check?

infeeeee ,

Find something which has native linux version as well, e.g. passmark performance test.

Run on win, linux and win version in wine. Comparing the 3 results you can figure out if wine is the problem, or some settings in linux if wine and linux results are similar

INeedMana ,
@INeedMana@lemmy.world avatar

That’s a test I’d like to see the results of

Waffelson OP ,

I check Cinebench and Passmark

Cinebench

Wine - 4112 points

Windows - 3874 points

Passmark

Wine - 7053 points

Windows - 6864 points

Linux - 7145 points

It looks like the problem is in cpu-z and not in wine or linux

Grass ,

Why is windows slacking so much there? Or is lower better on these ones?

GrappleHat ,
@GrappleHat@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s not unusual to see better performance on Wine compared to native Windows. Wine is a compatibility layer, not an emulator. So there’s not a lot of overhead. Additionally, vanilla Windows has a lot of background bloat consuming resources.

Internet searches show many instances of people reporting higher FPS in games on Wine vs vanilla Windows (on the same machine).

Grass ,

That’s actually excellent. I knew that ‘Wine Is Not an Emulator’ from their web page but I didn’t know I could expect better performance in anything running with it.
