Their discless gaming consoles that rely entirely on subscriptions like this were a lousy idea, streaming works for movies but not for console games. Nowadays digital console media takes up so much storage space, my 1TB discless xbox one can only ever have 10 games installed at any given time. And that’s not considering the updates that take literal hours being released every other day at this point. If those green discs ain’t broke then don’t fix them. I can’t wait to save up for a switch, that’s where all the fun games are anyway

Epicurus0319 ,

RTGame’s gonna have a field day

Epicurus0319 ,

And those versions will be updated every 50 years

Epicurus0319 ,

Yeah, I like having the roads with those little green lanes on either side, so I can imitate Seattle

Epicurus0319 ,

Yeah I agree, its user count is still growing on .world alone, and so fast in fact that I’m starting to consider making my sopuli alt my main account to not add to the load.

One of the many lemmy-like federated sites; I wonder if it lets you sign in with accounts hosted on the lemmy instances since those sites are federated with tildes. Apple mail lets you sign in with both outlook and gmail, and as I understand it, certain apps for Mastodon let you view Lemmy posts (I use Ice Cubes which does) since most of its instances are fedded with us but with a lot less functionality since this site doesn’t let you repost like mastodon does and mastodon only lets you upvote things

Edit: Apparently it’s not federated. Guess there’s nothing stopping it from just being another Hivemind-That-Must-Not-Be-Named in training.

Reminds me of what the hoverboard craze of the mid-10s resulted in, products with a bunch of shoddily-assembled components that turn the batteries into bombs making it onto store shelves faster than the new thing powered by said batteries can get new safety guidelines released for it

I was at first excited when he talked about Mars, but now that I know he can’t even run a social media platform I definitely wouldn’t wanna trust him with my life

Epicurus0319 , (edited )

And as for terraforming Mars, all we have to do is do what we’re doing here: Warm it with CO2 emissions. All it takes is a little atmospheric thickening to vaporize its glaciers of dry ice and already spawn a few surface brine lakes using its existing water table (the underground hypersaline ice partially melts each summer), then just get a bunch of comets to burn up in its atmosphere for the oceans and put an artificial magnetic field at its Lagrange point and turn all that atmospheric CO2 into oxygen with giant vats of cyanobacteria (which are what naturally terraformed Earth billions of years ago)

And we can terraform Venus using future tech we might develop to reverse climate change here, like giant orbital parasols, reflective dust and carbon capture

Why is my Lemmy experience feeling so lame? **UPDATE**

I’ve subscribed to a plethora of communities that really interest me and actually have posts and discussions in them, but I have to go to the specific community to see this. My “Subscribed” feed only contains a few of the same posts that I’ve seen for weeks in Hot, the same posts from even longer ago in “Active”,...

Epicurus0319 ,

No wonder everything on the hivemind-that-must-not-be-named sounds and feels like it’s being regurgitated by the same people, from the low-effort memes to the armchair city planners, atheist circlejerks and very enlightened political/economic views.

Epicurus0319 ,

A fancy rug in a bathroom? Imagine if grandma visited and had to use that toilet very badly

Epicurus0319 ,

There are some with very specific purposes/nationalities (like lemmynsfw, lemmy.ca, and one Portuguese-only one for people from Portugal) that somewhat resemble the porn subs and the country-themed subreddits like r/canada and r/suddenlycaralho respectively.

Epicurus0319 ,

It seems that the images are stored on imgur

Epicurus0319 ,

Yeah, it’s not sustainable to just flock to one instance to the point of there being no real competition. Lemmy.world now hosts nearly 3 times as many user accounts as lemmy.ml- the second-largest instance and a much older one too, and has gotten big way too fast.

Epicurus0319 ,

I just re-created one of my favorite subreddits on sopuli.xyz, using my alt account on that instance as the mod account.

Epicurus0319 ,

Mastodon is so much better

Epicurus0319 ,

It’s somewhat harder to find friends on there, but once you do they’ll be quality over quantity. And besides, they even have a cool poll-based RPG account.

Epicurus0319 ,

If you post it they will come. (But you’ll have to guess my profile, it existed prior to my discovery of lemmy so I didn’t register using my lemmy.world account)

How do you choose an instance and does that have a significant effect on your Lemmy experience?

I originally chose to make my account on lemmy.world since all the content seemed to come from there. But I’ve since learned that I can fill my feed with stuff from any instance so it feels like it doesn’t actually matter if I’m on lemmy.world or not. At the same time, Lemmy.world seems to be frequently under attack so...

Epicurus0319 ,

I hated it, I only just barely put up with the toxic community so I could still visit my favorite subs only (I used apollo so I could ignore the garbage that’d be recommended to us constantly). I used the app-pocalypse as an excuse to leave. Now I only lurk there for the ooh-la-la subs, but as more and more creators there have lately been moving to lemmynsfw I might not even need those subs for much longer.

Epicurus0319 ,

Yes, it’s great. I’d also recommend Memmy since it shows downvotes and upvotes separately instead of net score (which lemmy does, idk about the other reddit-like federated sites) to discourage circlejerking

My dad has reported being attacked by a crow at our condo in Seattle

Tankies are either:

  • Blue-haired white college kids from high-income families going through the commie phase that many go through due to academia’s fascination with at least the theory of it and the fact that such students start out spending most of what little free time they have online
  • The stereotypical basement-dwelling, probable-chomo neckbeards with BO who moderate large subreddits, unironically believe that work should be abolished and never socially matured past high school. Examples include Doreen Ford and awkwardtheturtle.
  • Edgy American 13-year-olds from high-income families who just discovered politics and chose (their idea of) communism over nazism and unironically stan Putin because they think he’s fighting something something gay/pronouns (which totally aren’t despised in Ukraine too)- as well as many other free and fair governments like North Korea and the Chinese Communist Party.

And sealioning is a type of internet trolling where you repeatedly make incessant, bad-faith attempts to “just have a debate” and then ignoring all responses unread.

Epicurus0319 ,

Basically “when de revolushin happensh der gonna issue ush bridesh and lower dee age of conshent to shirteen”

Epicurus0319 ,

Instances are where the communities are hosted. Think of them like several different reddits with the subs spread out among them

Epicurus0319 ,

It’s very similar to Apollo

Epicurus0319 ,

Same, I originally used Memmy but it’s really buggy, and ever since the lemmy.world hack it’s completely forgotten all of my subscriptions and blocks- so no home feed, and I still have to scroll past communities I find unbearable and that one terminally online self-promo spammer on c/atheism who keeps polluting it with links to his rather angry blog posts.

Epicurus0319 ,

Most of lemmy’s community mods thus far are just passionate pioneers who want to refound their favorite subreddits here and then invite people over and demote interested people to mod to make more entirely-new moderators, if the migrated subs are big ones, then odds are the actual mods for the originals are the powertripping, far-left and probable-chomo type who don’t wanna give up the powertrip they enjoy on reddit for a small refuge that nobody posts on in comparison.

But tomatoes didn’t exist anywhere outside of two isolated continents until the turn of the 16th century

Epicurus0319 ,

I like the customizable LEDs on my razer mouse mat, except when my PC (2021 15.6-inch razer laptop) decides that since I just went 6 hours without installing what are now almost daily win10 patches, it’s time to fuck up my drivers- and then it exits sleep mode despite the lid being closed and there being nothing wrong with my power settings, causing my fans to jet-engine, the logo led thing to come on and the mouse mat to shine brighter than a sun with its default color-cycle thing. And for bonus points, sometimes it even tries to address the problem by actually auto-updating at the time I told it to (1 AM or something), so I get startled by the “du dun, duh dun doooooo” which always seems louder at night.

And I dare not switch to linux, as razer laptops are not a common laptop choice and therefore it’s unclear how I’d be able to keep all its complicated and already-buggy drivers and proprietary software up to date so they don’t make it overheat within the first week, especially since the odds of me finding any help online for converting such an exotic rig to ubuntu are minimal to none.

Epicurus0319 ,

On Mastodon I’ve already got an alt account on techhub.social; on lemmy I prefer sopuli.xyz, lemmy.ml sucks

Epicurus0319 ,

Typical Apple, making its users feel superior to everyone else just because they prefer a little more privacy

Epicurus0319 ,

I’d imagine not

Epicurus0319 ,

One month into my home instance’s existence (lemmy.world) and we’ve already had our inaugural hack and a few technical growing pains that broke several mobile apps for days

Epicurus0319 ,

The powermods just demonstrated they can only survive without their precious powertrip for 2 days TOPS, most of our mods are passionate pioneers but in the long term we might also have the powermod problem faced on pretty much every site except Wikipedia’s gigachads and RationalWiki’s democratically-elected mod team. But even then, simply defedding your instance from the ones they powertrip on should quarantine them, and it also helps that since we’re nonprofit they have no boots to lick.

I REALLY don’t want us to bully kids to the point of suicide for using Reddit.

And I dread the day that c/atheism becomes just another embarrassing circlejerk dedicated entirely to bashing believers and blaming all current problems on their overall existence.
