I can’t speak to lemmy.ml but I can say despite having a lot of issues with China I also find it difficult to criticize because I never lived there or anywhere similar but criticizing and noting where the US can improve is something I’ve spent a lot of time to understand the nuances and challenges of.

It’s not that I want to defend China just that I feel like I never have a great picture of what’s happening there.

All this being said fuck them for their treatment of uighur muslims. That I do feel confident about.

fushuan ,

It’s not that they don’t criticise, it’s that when something negative shows up, they defend it showing several biased sources, as if they meant anything, or jump into whataboutism.

Whenever someone posts something negative and promotes discussion or critique about it, lo and behold, see how this other country is also horrible and see the good things mine does. Like dude, cool, let us discuss this and you can create another post for those things. It’s pretty clear that they want to divert the conversation.

I’ve got a friend from Shenzhen who thinks Xi is the worst thing since Mao. If I said that to a lemmy.ml user I’d be banned from the instance.

Hell, I got suspended for 4 days (and trolled to fuck) when I suggested someone was a tankie (literally a communist who believes in using tanks to kill people).

Silly thing is I’m a fucking socialist! I believe in all the key tenets of socialism. But heaven forbid you criticise DPRK or China. They’ll chew you apart.

There’s plenty of fucking countries where from socialism has worked and there’s plenty where some level of socialism currently works.

I mentioned the Nordic Model and instead of them agreeing it was a good step they spent their time ‘educating’ me on how it’s not true socialism and it’s just as bad as the US.

Fucking boggles the mind. They genuinely seem to think Stalin was a saint and Kim is a benevolent, democratically elected leader. If anyone thinks otherwise it’s due to Western propaganda.

I know people living in China - they ain’t fucking happy!

The ironic thing is the origin of the word “tankie” relates to the revolutions of Hungarian and Polish communists against Soviet-Russian imperialism that was crushed by Soviet tanks. They were the ones in Western countries who were rooting for the tanks.

Tankies are the enemies of actual communists. They don’t like the word because it reminds them of that, and the fact that communist revolutions were antagonized not just by the imperialistic US, but the imperialistic USSR as well.

Let the patch be part of the code for one or two minor releases. Then revert the changes of the patch.

victorz ,

Why would they do that? Talk about generating mistrust.

henfredemars ,

It may not be malice. Incompetence.

jaybone ,

They are going to “accidentally” remove a fix?

henfredemars ,

By not understanding how version control works. I’ve worked at places that had a surprising number of developers who would just merge things in ways that drop code from other developers.

siipale ,

Can you give an example how that would happen?

henfredemars ,

It’s pretty straightforward. Merge conflicts? No such thing! Just make my version the next version.

dejected_warp_core ,

Also that’s likely a team that doesn’t use a branching workflow, has poor review on merges, and/or using Git like it’s SVN.

henfredemars ,

How optimistic. At my last workplace I got us to finally stop using zip files for version control. This was at a fortune 500 company.

The utility of software is so great that even terrible processes are still functional to some degree.

dejected_warp_core ,

A times B times C equals X. If X is more than the cost of a failure or security breach, we don’t fix the software.

Are there a lot of these kinds of problems?

You wouldn’t believe.

Which Fortune 500 company do you work for?

A major one.

henfredemars ,

I now work for a small business but in the interest of not getting bitten in the ass I don’t wish to give the name of my previous employer. It was a large defense contractor, but our values didn’t align so I moved on when I found another opportunity to put food on the table. I know that’s not a satisfying answer but I’m here for entertainment value and the opportunity cost might not be worth it. My main point was that even though they have the money they didn’t see the value in good software process.

All the time! We would leave bugs unfixed even if the fix was trivially easy because management felt productive listing it as a cost savings. Software maintenance was seen as a necessary evil.

dejected_warp_core ,

Software maintenance was seen as a necessary evil.

The most important lesson I learned about the economics of software is that sourcecode is always accounted as a liability and not an asset. Accountants will never let you code your way into more value. Everything else you see stems from that truth.

I like that uncovering the lore is a community effort. Like archeology.

It brings people together and that is something positive. And because of that I learned a bunch about our own history and myths etc.

So I hope they never stop making games that keep it vague. Gives the whole thing a detective Aspekt that I appreciate.

That doesn’t mean there is no place for games from from that have a more conventional way of storytelling.

MacNCheezus OP ,

Perhaps. I’m honestly not sure how this kitchen could have cost anywhere near 15 grand. The cabinets are all just repainted and the stove doesn’t look particularly extravagant.

MacNCheezus OP ,

Yeah, at this point in time I basically just assume everything is fake until proven real.

And I’ve been around some of these house flippers, they love to brag in public about how much money and effort they’re spending to renovate these houses but in private they always brag about how much money they’re saving by cutting various corners and getting everything done on the cheap.

someguy3 ,

Fuck flippers.

ChickenLadyLovesLife ,

I found one local house for $70K that had a huge number of problems, like cracks and rust showing through the stucco exterior, broken fascia boards, upstairs that was only 6’ high, stairway that came up into the upstairs bathroom etc. etc. (the house dated from around 1850 or so). I passed on it, but I was surprised to see that it sold just a few days later, and even more surprised when it was re-listed less than two months later for $195K. I went to see it again and it was a classic lipstick-on-a-pig flip: just grey paint and those nasty grey fake wood vinyl floor planks everywhere. I’ve never been so flat out offended by a flip before - and the thing sold almost immediately for the asking price. I feel sorry for the schmucks who bought that thing, although they probably turned around and sold it for $300K.

StraySojourner ,

Lmfao oh fuck, I thought the floor was a countertop, like they were taking a pic from behind an island

MacNCheezus OP ,

Yeah, no, I’m pretty sure that’s the floor. If it was a countertop, it would only work to create the illusion of a floor from one specific angle, and I kinda doubt a house flipper would go to the length of building a countertop for that particular purpose. Yeah, a picture from that angle might help attract potential buyers, but it would be immediately visible when you come in for an inspection. I’m pretty sure there’s more effective and less obvious ways to screw your buyers.

StraySojourner ,

No now that you’ve mentioned it it’s definitely the floor I was just super confused at first.

jaybone ,

But it looks like the counters match the floor.

PeriodicallyPedantic ,

I don’t think you can get purple marble? If you could, I can’t imagine youd use it in a floor for a kitchen like this. It’d be for a counter used as an accent piece for a millionaire’s mansion’s 2nd kitchen.

Single player supremacy

I’m still enjoying civ5 without any DLC

FiniteBanjo OP ,

Something fun to mess with in Civ V is on small custom maps with designated start points, when start bias can’t take effect it will always place players on points starting from bottom right going left and then from bottom to top.

Example: Player 1 will always be placed on the lowest tile furthest to the right.

You can use this to get the deity achievment if you just don’t give the AI any workable tiles.

Zikeji ,

I don’t play with him anymore.

Kolanaki ,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

I like playing with my sister because we both regularly play on Deity difficulty and playing against each other is the only way either of us can be challenged anymore. Of course many times we just team up against the rest of the world.

nikita ,

That’s what sucks about Civ (and EU4, HOI4 and the like for that matter) — once you figure out how it works and you start winning it becomes boring in single player.

And then for multiplayer it’s hard to find someone committed to playing for long stretches of time consistently.

IMO games where losing is fun is where it’s at, like Crusader Kings, Rimworld and Dwarf Fortress.

Kolanaki ,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

Speaking of DF and EU4: I just heard about Songs of Syx not too long ago that’s basically Dwarf Fortress/Rimworld combined with EU/HOI. A granular empire builder, where you also have other competing empires to conquer or ally with. It looks dope, and I might get it.

That sounds awesome. I’ll try it out some time.
