nikita ,

Your comment was probably off handed but I just wanna clarify that muslims aren’t to blame for our oil addiction, rich people are

nikita ,

Dude ikr. You have to actively try to make methanol when you’re distilling, like only collecting the foreshots over and over.

And by that point I’d be super easy to tell it’s not regular alcohol because it will smell like nail polish remover and other volatile compounds.

nikita ,

Can you elaborate or link to further reading?

I assumed methanol is the first to go because of its lower boiling point — 65 degrees compared to ethanol at 78

nikita ,

The amount of subsidies they need just to mimic a fraction of our power!

nikita ,

I read that in Alabama (or maybe Mississippi, I can’t recall) you can drink alcohol while driving. You just can’t be above the blood alcohol concentration limit.

nikita ,

Comstruction:

If you want to build the best building you gotta know every detail about how it’s made, which you can only get close to by hiring competent consultants (i.e.: architects, engineers, etc) Because if you’re not specific about what you want, you can bet your ass you’re getting the cheapest version.

nikita ,

TIL. Thanks.

In Canada, the drinking age is 19 everywhere except Quebec where it’s 18, so in Ottawa 18 year olds just go across the river to buy liquor.

nikita ,

If only we could prod decision makers at the big software companies to actually support Linux…

Those fucks are way too greedy though. I mean AutoCAD hasn’t even got any significant feature updates in years let alone support for any platform other than Windows and they still charge insane prices for it just cause they can. And at the end of the day me and everyone at work are all stuck on shitty Windows.

nikita ,

That’s what sucks about Civ (and EU4, HOI4 and the like for that matter) — once you figure out how it works and you start winning it becomes boring in single player.

And then for multiplayer it’s hard to find someone committed to playing for long stretches of time consistently.

IMO games where losing is fun is where it’s at, like Crusader Kings, Rimworld and Dwarf Fortress.

nikita ,

That sounds awesome. I’ll try it out some time.

Do you know about Timberborn? That’s another one that looks cool.

nikita ,

Right? Even from a purely selfish perspective, this is unwarranted and wanton whereas if you go after a company you can make money.

nikita ,

I would loop it with math going to philosophy going to sociology (with a bunch of things in between).

nikita ,

Its all about money at the end of the day. For instance, the uni I attended is shutting down its entomology programme while continuing to pump large amounts of money into cell bio.

nikita ,

Plus the insane power consumption for such a marginally useful feature. Especially given that it’s on by default for everyone using google (as I understand)

It’s almost like the feature is not ready but they need to show off to their investors anyway. At the cost of user experience and the environment.

At least with ChatGPT you have to consciously go to their website and use, rather than being the first result of a fucking internet search.

nikita ,

The problem is that despite western countries granting independence to their former colonies, the world order and the global economy is still set up in a colonial way. The global south remains dependent on western support.

I can’t blame some New Caledonians for wanting to remain a part of France. An isolated region like that greatly benefits from the economic support that being part of a larger country provides, even if it comes at the cost of racism.

Rap music playing out loud through a shitty mic

nikita ,

Costa Rica? What’s it like living there?

nikita ,

Wow thank you for your super informative comment!

nikita ,

This seems like further confirmation of that theory that I saw posted on here that the Saudi oil barons funded Elon’s purchase of Twitter for the sole purpose of destroying it. They want to silence online discussions of climate change and other left wing topics.

Combined with Reddit being owned by Tencent, Facebook being eternally evil, and TikTok being unconducive to any form of coherent dialogue, there are not many places for left wing discourse on the internet anymore.

nikita ,

Thanks for pointing that out. It’s just so normal to think that way here that they’ve even corrupted me into framing climate change that way. It’s not a left wing topic; it’s a reality.

I just hope young people who are thinking of voting conservative here keep in mind that those assholes literally don’t believe in climate change and by extension science and facts. That alone should automatically disqualify conservatives from anyone’s consideration.

nikita ,

It’s possible it was a initially pump and dump that turned into a Saudi funded venture. He’s a useful idiot from the Arabs’ perspective.

nikita ,

Yeah that’s possible too. It’s all speculation until the Netflix documentary comes out years later lol

nikita ,

My bad, Reddit is still owned by an American company but Tencent has a large stake in it since 2019, at least enough to influence the platform into complying with pro-CCP censorship and etc

Is there a more politically and ideologically diverse alternative for Lemmy?

I know the real answer is reddit but I really don’t want to go back now that I’ve already grown used to life without it. I was hoping for Lemmy to be a viable substitute but it isn’t. I can see how this place is wonderful for the certain type of person but that person is not me. My experience during the past 6+ months has...

nikita ,

Though it’s only tangentially related to your inquiry, you should check out improvethenews.org

It’s basically what you are looking for but with news stories, though it’s primarily focused American news. It allows you to read the different narratives without actually visiting cancer news sites like Sky news.

nikita ,

Do people not realize how vain and materialistic that makes them sound? As if iPhone ownership is the pinnacle of wealth or whatever

nikita ,

Even cooler, in my opinion, are languages that are even further outside of common indo european language paradigms, such as Navajo which uses degrees of animacy instead of grammatical gender and Basque which uses ‘focus’ and ‘topic’ to determine word order rather than subjects and objects.

nikita ,

Good point. What I meant is that it’s different from grammatical gender typical of European languages as you defined it.

Grammatical gender is a bad name for such a general concept that goes beyond the social definition of gender. In fact, that term is a bit eurocentric.

nikita ,

It’s derived from Irish, originally meaning thieves or bandits if I recall correctly.

What are some hidden indie gems nobody knows about?

Which indies did you discover and would love more people to know about? I’ll start: The Pale Beyond. Not sure if it’s a hidden gem tbh, but it’s such a good story rich game. I laughed, I cried and felt the characters struggles. If you like story rich games/ choices matter, check it out.

nikita , (edited )

Gunpoint. Story based detective game where you solve a murder. Gameplay mechanics make you feel like a badass. You can pretty much finish it in a single sitting but its great.

Heat signature. A stealth based top down bounty hunter game with roguelike elements. Really well done. Made by the same guy that made Gunpoint.

Neo scavenger. A murder hobo roguelike with a surprisingly long storyline.

Super house of dead ninjas. Great fast paced platformer where you’re a badass ninja. Great to pick up and play in short bursts.

Fez. 2D exploration platformer with to change the perspective. Pretty chill and has a cool art style

More well known games that I’ll list anyway in case someones looking for some awesome ones:

Super meat boy

Project zomboid

FTL

Celeste

Crypt of the necrodancer

Enter the gungeon

Spelunky

Noita. Saw it mentionned in this thread and I am seconding this. Great game. But brutal as fuck.

Cave story. A classic. And it’s free.

Owlboy. Took the developer like 10-15 years to make. I’ve heard good things but I’m only just starting to play it.

Also pro tip: if you want more recommendations go look at what speedrunners are playing. People that spend that much time playing a single game over and over generally choose very good games to play.

nikita ,

Thank you. I will say that I listed a lot permadeath roguelikes and not everyone is into those. They can be very frustrating.

Canadians worry US democracy cannot survive Trump's return to White House, poll finds (www.reuters.com)

About two-thirds of Canadians surveyed this month said American democracy cannot survive another four years of Donald Trump in the White House, and about half said the United States is on the way to becoming an authoritarian state, a poll released on Monday said....

nikita ,

Regardless of the outcome of the US elections, I hope this makes the Canadian government realize that it needs take a more independent stance from the US in terms of its policies. Because right now our politicians don’t even want to change the daylight savings time policy without US states agreeing to it at the same time.

nikita ,

I understand where you are coming from but I don’t think it would be that bad. I mean if I recall correctly even within the US there are some areas that use daylight savings and some that don’t. And Canada switching would encentivize the US to switch.

nikita ,

I agree. The US doesn’t listen to us and if they go all fascist we shouldn’t listen to them either. Regardless, we should endeavour to set an example for them to follow. Whether they follow it or not is up to them of course.

nikita ,

Fuck Notepad. All my homies use Kate.

Electric appliances are generally more efficient than appliances powered directly by non renewable sources though. And a single oil/gas powerplant is probably more energy efficient than thousands of individually gas and oil powered appliances. So just changing to electric appliances will already reduce emissions.

And it sets the city up to upgrade to renewable energy in the future.

nikita ,

Thanks for your comment. Very informative and insightful.

However, your argument only works when electricity is sourced from 100% non renewable sources. If your city power uses some hydro, nuclear or other renewable sources, the efficiency of electric appliances goes up and will likely be at least comparable with the average gas powered home appliance. And it will keep going up as power plants become renewable and thermal plants are decomissioned.
