I came to Lemmy after Reddit’s crackdown on third-party clients. Looking back, I’m pretty happy with how Lemmy is going and how it feels right now. The number of users decreased after the initial spike, sure, but it also stabilized at a respectable level. There are things I’m still missing, but the way it is definitely works for me.
Same situation for me. This is such a nice place compared to reddit. I still think it would be better if it grows some more, but one of the nice things about Lemmy is that it has a more “niche” user base
Yeah, same here. I’m not nearly as active here as I was on reddit, but there’s not as much going on here and activity feeds itself. It’s fine, I read more books.
That sounds like it would taste pretty good, but I just have no desire to stand in the blazing hot parking lot of a Costco with a group of strangers all furiously wolfing down a pound of chocolate pie each lol
Depends on how the song is interpreted. The intention is probably “by the 𝑛ᵗʰ day of Christmas, my true love had given to me [list of 𝑛+(𝑛–1)+…1 items]” but the actual grammar means that by day 12, you’d have received 𝑛(13–𝑛) of the 𝑛ᵗʰ item, or
12 drummers drumming
22 pipers piping
30 lords-a leaping
36 ladies dancing
40 maids a-milking
42 swans a-swimming
42 geese a-laying
40 gold rings
36 calling birds
30 French hens
22 turtle doves
12 partriges in pear trees
Total is 184 birds. By day 7, only 69 birds, up 50 % from 46 by day 6. At least the number of received birds stays constant (23) on days 8-12. The geese technically-a-reproducing are not accounted for, as the eggs might not be fertilized and take several weeks to hatch.
Oh I’m positive its an OSHA violation, but it got fixed after a while. A stopgap till the right switch/part arrived. In recent times,at least. In the past however, this would stay till safety came through and made them do it right. And this is a billion dollar company too. Blows my mind.
We’ve got an elevator at work that is… less than reliable. To reset the elevator is a giant breaker BUT sometimes it’s not the mechanics in the elevator but the control board. To reset that board is just a GFI. Also the lights in the elevator are a different light switch in the same closet.
In the bottom left it shows the current year in the Aztec calendar, presumably cut off and the “current year” in the Gregorian calendar at 2015 AD. I’m 95% sure this is just some guy’s alt history map, especially considering how many wack ass names some of these places have
It’s definitely an alternate history map, and I hope it’s an accurate potential map of an uncolonized North America if it’s cultures grew to nation state sizes.
I’m European so I’m not meaning to offend, but there’s something very interesting to me try to visualise how America could have grown without colonisation, and perhaps this is through my European lense but I’d imagine borders would move and groups would swallow eachother up. The scale of countries on this map is pretty comparable to what we see in Europe and Asia, but I don’t know enough about America to know if this is respectful to the placement and potential of Native American groups (e.g I think I’ve read before the the Comanche are a successful seperation from the Shoshone that was largely due to their expansion due to horses, which would have happened very differently sans colonisation), and I’m not even sure if this map follows natural borders like mountains and rivers, largely because I’m just not that familiar with America.
this map is complete nonsense because some of these groups only exist as a result of interactions with europeans, and even some of the other ones are from completely different places before europeans came in.
The Aztec empire being the dominant force on the continent could be a very unfortunate situation for everyone living there.
They were so unpopular with every surrounding nation (because of all the murdering and kidnapping and human sacrificing) that when the Spanish showed up, the vast vast majority of the soldiers that fought against the Aztecs were from the local peoples.
The thing about capitalism is that it DOES promote freedom and innovation. The problem is that continuous innovation is rarely profitable so companies generally won’t bother innovating after a certain point and the text on the reverse side of the freedom coin is “free from consequences”
Capitalism is like… a good start to a much better economic system we haven’t figured out yet.
You’re not at all wrong. The problem is now we’re all so “bought in” (heh) to capitalism, and the power it has established its so entrenched, that the idea of iterating on it has become so close to literal blasphemy as makes no odds.
Mhh yes freedom through capitalism. I love the freedom Apple gives me over their device that I bought but don’t own. Or when Samsung locks devices in mexico because they can and people in mexico dare to buy used phones.
Unfortunately bankruptcy has been disempowered strongly. There are quite a few types of non-dischargeable debt like court rulings and student loans in the US. Credit Cards are definitely dischargeable but bankruptcy has also been made as painful as possible for working people.
Credit scores, created in the 80s, are required for any type of borrowing. Bankruptcy effectively denies the filer any type of credit or loans that aren't extremely predatory and costly. You effectively have to live 7 years without credit cards, new student loans, auto loans, mortgage, etc. Which, for many people under water might not be different than they live now, sans the credit cards. But in the absence of easy revolving credit, you may still need to borrow money to avoid eviction or your power being cut. In that case, your main option is going to be payday lenders. A service so corrupt and predatory it'd probably be classified as a criminal enterprise in the past.
Well, that's unexpected but I guess CC companies are willing to risk it. Especially if they know that CCs are the only viable option they have and they can offer penalty APRs with little pushback.
I’ve had extended family members declare bankruptcy several times and they’re still approved for a credit card. Whereas I have never missed a credit payment in my life have a hard time getting a line of credit. I don’t get it, the system is broken.
I know someone who has delcared bankruptcy at least twice… each time she was showered with ads for credit cards and auto loans. Apparently the thought process is “this person can’t declare bankruptcy again for x years, so we’re safe.”
...wtf? If a person has declared bankruptsy, sure they can't discharge again but their credit score is so trash they could just ignore creditors. As long as it isn't worth it to take someone to court, they have less incentive to pay.
Sadly, it was done manually. I had to migrate it to this brand new bleeding edge technology, Apache Velocity. That’s not great either, but it’s much less terrible than XSLT.
For that task I had to learn two templating languages at the same time to port it from one to the other. Wasn’t an easy task.
Bro the project I’m on uses XSLT and the first time I saw it I legitimately thought I was having a stroke because I could not accept that anybody would be stupid and/or masochistic enough to actually want something like that.
However, I’ve now made it my mission to master it because it makes me feel like a high-born wizard speaking of ancient secrets in a tower high above humanity
Unity is hors-concours, they’ve already won this race. None of these social networks have managed to fuck up so badly as to fully destroy their reputations like Unity did.
I don’t know. Twitter running rampant as a nazi platform and safe harbor under Elon’s tenure/stewardship has been something else. That platform was always a mess/ bad but not to the degree Elon has cranked it up to. It’s full blown mania/ hysteria on that platform.
Edit: I miss the days of Twitter when I could’ve used it as my own personal news ticker/ use it to follow sports and my favorite sports reporters. It’s shocking but there are actual uses and use cases for Twitter. It used to not be social media trash.
An I the only one who thinks this is exactly what he wanted? Hated seeing the western social media trying to block disinformation, so he buys it and let’s the right wing extremists have free rein
Chinese authority doesn’t like twitter. Tesla was incentivised by the Chinese gouvernement to come to china and grow the EV market there. Tesla had a lot of very nice and attractive loans and business opportunities. China alone is now 32% of sales for Tesla. Muskrat buying twitter and driving it to the ground serve the Chinese interest, and I would not be surprised to hear there was an agreement to something along the lines of “you buy this, you do shit with it, we close our eyes on our loans” from the Chinese.
For the nazis, it’s all about the Tesla factory in Texas. Texas is quite red, when COVID happened and California was closing down Tesla factory in Fremont, Shit-face was opening his new factory in Texas. Democrats were all in for the Covid measures. Going strong with anti-vaxxers and republicans gained him favors in Texas, to be able to use his slaves, sorry employees despite the pandemic.
Down the line, I think this psychopath is only doing what all billionaire does: using his money to make more, more, more, completely ignoring the consequences. The only thing that drives him is making more money. Not with Twitter, but with using twitter to get what he wants…
They tried to apply a per install fee and make it retroactive for all games using the Unity Runtime. Meaning games made with Unity even a few years ago who didn’t agree to this would be charged each time someone uninstalls and reinstalls the game.
This is the second time they have tried to make retroactive changes, by the way, and they even deleted the part of the TOS that prevented retroactive changes.
It’s really just one of many things they have done in the last few years
To list out a lot of the many things: They’ve done forced RTO which is pretty internally disliked, fired a ton of people lately, a bit ago the CEO publicly said anyone who doesn’t prioritize monetization are “the biggest fucking idiots”, they bought an ad company known for making malware, and they keep getting in bed with military contracts including Lockheed. Oh and they cancelled their example project game Gigaya which I’m still bitter over
Just a minor correction, they actually merged with Iron Source, they didn’t just buy them. That means there was a good bit of board carry over, which means Iron Source management is now making decisions at Unity.
Well I was not a high paying costumer, I just went for the lunch and didn’t give any tip. Assumed that it was good enough to pay for the basic service.
I don’t volunteer either piece of information, but sooner or later someone is going to overhear me ordering vegan food or see me opening my lunch and the dreaded conversation will have to happen. I wish people would just let me make my own food choices in private without making a big thing about it.
But they feel attacked. They want to continue living in blissful ignorance of how animals are treated or how bad it is for the environment. Same as windows users who don’t want to be reminded what corporate cucks they are. Some even go so far as to become utter bootlickers (see also Elon Musk fanboys)
I usually ask when someone eats any exotic cereals or processed (tofu, seitan) to 1 have something to talk about (I very much enjoy tofu and all uncommon cereals) 2 know their dietary restrictions to avoid offering them meat or taking care of that whenever there’s an outing. You know, small talk.
The only class I ever had bring it up was my optional college level philosophy class, and even then I’m pretty sure it was more from the professor than the school. I freaking love that man for it, he changed my life. If you want to learn how animals are treated here, most of the time you gotta do the research yourself. Regrettably, very few people care enough to do so…
What sucks is that you have to keep it for yourself, otherwise people will think negatively of you. Because for some reason caring about animals or the climate is cringe or something idk, like it’s something to almost be embarrassed about. Which is doubly strange when animal abuse is often considered very bad by those very same people.
But I guess for many caring about other people in general is cringe as well, as long as they are sufficiently emotionally distanced, so ¯\(ツ)/¯ I just wish it wasn’t, and that caring for others was the baseline more than anything else.
Yeah, the stereotype drives me nuts. Like, yes, food is a big part of day-to-day life and sometimes I need to explain when asked why I’m not eating if there’s nothing for me at, say, a company event. I try to avoid it as much as possible and just say I’m not hungry.
Right?? My work kept harassing me to order ice cream along with everyone else when I was new, and I continually told them “nah it’s okay,” “no thanks,” etc. People really can’t just leave you alone.
I went psst psssst pssst to a cute cat in a garden I was passing, not noticing a woman walking towards me. She thought I was hissing at her, gave me such a LOOK. She was wearing hijab, I’m an old lady, who knows what was going through her head.
