Part of it is just getting a feel for Chinese goods and using that to determine what is a good deal or what is a scam. I’ve worked with a lot of Chinese suppliers for a long time so I have a sixth sense for their bullshit.

Generally I avoid anything that could be a safety risk (e.g. Mains power) , and keep an eye on the photos to see if they look too good to be true. Official stores are good, as are items with many purchases and reviews that include pictures.

Partially correct. Those are beams, girders, and columns.

@wander1236@sh.itjust.works avatar

A girder (/ˈɡɜːrdər/) is a beam used in construction.

WoodScientist ,

Specifically a girder is a beam that other beams frame into. Gravity load typically goes slab->beam->girder->columns->foundation. At least that’s what I teach in my steel design classes.

Sadbutdru ,

Are there any girders in the picture then? Or none, or impossible to tell? I can’t see any, by that definition.

WoodScientist ,

You can see them on the upper levels. On the bottom level, you can see the shear tabs, mounted on the girders that additional beams will frame into.

Nugget , to nostupidquestions in Why is waking up when my alarm goes off so difficult and unpleasant yet "sleeping in" does feel good and isn't satisfying?

Everyone else has good suggestions, but for me, it turned out to be sleep apnea. See if you can talk to a sleep doctor.

pipe ,

Seconded! I found out in my late twenties that I was waking up every three minutes, all night long. I used to sleep 10-18 hours a day if I could get the time, and was still exhausted.

I won’t even nap without my breathing machine now; the difference is shocking.

Anti_Iridium ,

My nurses always complement me for using it 99% of the time. I can’t understand why someone would not use it.

pipe ,

I think for some folks there’s something primal going on, a feeling of being trapped when things are over their faces that they can’t shake. It seems like something deep-seated and unconscious, really hard to get past. I get that way if I can’t freely move my arms and legs while sleeping, but the face has never been so bad.

I wish I knew some advice I could give that would help people struggling but whenever food, sex, or sleep is involved, we’re still weird fleshy worm tubes twitching our way through a hostile world.

Late twenties as well. Unfortunately, my machine hasn’t made a difference for me yet, which has been pretty difficult. Hopefully a solution is in my future

I can’t recommend this highly enough if you’re never planning on having a kid or if you’re done having kids. I am a huge weenie when it comes to medical procedures and mine was super simple. I was sore for a few days, did my follow up, and that was it.

I still use condoms because of STDs but I never have to worry about accidentally having a kid if a condom breaks.

One condom vs 6,000 diapers. I think your right about the condom doing less damage to the environment.

Just use the washable ones, made from organic cotton. Lower environmental impact, shorter time until potty trained as well on average. Still not as good as not putting extra people on the planet though 😁

Misinformation, not disinformation.

Also, many if not most people take “based on a true story” on TV at face value. Therefore it’s important to point out the inaccuracies.

“I mean misinformation isn’t the correct term either if a work of fiction never intended to disciminate any real information in the first place.”

Which was intended in the case of the Chernobyl miniseries:

Mazin’s interest in creating the series originated when he decided to write something that addressed "how we’re struggling with the global war on the truth right now".[23] Another inspiration is that he knew Chernobyl exploded, but he did not know why. He explained, “I didn’t know why, and I thought there was this inexplicable gap in my knowledge … So, I began reading about it, just out of this very dry, intellectual curiosity, and what I discovered was that, while the story of the explosion is fascinating, and we make it really clear exactly why and how it happened, what really grabbed me and held me were the incredible stories of the human beings who lived through it, and who suffered and sacrificed to save the people that they loved, to save their countrymen and to save a continent, and continued to do so, against odds that were startling and kept getting worse. I was so moved by it. It was like I had discovered a war that people just hadn’t really depicted, and I became obsessed”.[24] Mazin said that “The lesson of Chernobyl isn’t that modern nuclear power is dangerous. The lesson is that lying, arrogance, and suppression of criticism are dangerous”.” —https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_(miniseries)#Development_and_writing)

dustyData , to nostupidquestions in Why is waking up when my alarm goes off so difficult and unpleasant yet "sleeping in" does feel good and isn't satisfying?

If you want to know how to fix this problem, the term to search for is sleep hygiene. You’ve been waking up at the wrong times in your sleep cycle. Quality sleep is a matter of habits, every person is a bit different. Research and apply what fits best with your lifestyle. Also, invest in quality beds and pillows, as well as temperature regulation. It’s far more important than most people give it credit.

Shdwdrgn , to asklemmy in How to deal with exhaustion?

Another suggestion… have you considered if something in particular might be preventing you from getting good sleep? In my case, I’ve had restless-leg for quite awhile which was managed by doing some stretches before bed as needed. After a really car car accident, that went into overdrive, the stretches made no obvious difference and so I didn’t think that was an issue any more, but apparently I was tossing and turning all night. I’d sleep for 9+ hours and wake up a zombie.

After years of this I finally talked to my doctor about it, we discussed a lot of things and I mentioned how I had previous had the problems with my leg pains at night. He decided to try treating this symptom and suddenly I started getting real sleep again. By now it has gotten so bad that if I forget to take my pills at night, my legs absolutely scream at me the moment I lay down in bed. Yeah I’ll be on this med the rest of my life, but I’m getting good sleep now and feeling energetic the day.

The point is, your issue may be something you have already dismissed without realize fully how it affects you. When an unknown problem comes up, sometimes you just have to go back and reevaluate everything.

Omegamint ,
@Omegamint@hexbear.net avatar

Sleep apnea is also a potential

Shdwdrgn ,

That’s such a common thing these days that I have to wonder if humans have always had this issue, or if it has anything to do with our modern lifestyles. I was going to do a sleep study at one point, but when I took their questionnaire I checked off no on everything on their list. Then I found out my insurance wouldn’t even cover it, and couldn’t afford to do the study anyway. Ah well, if I ever get back to a point where I’m having trouble sleeping again then I’ll reconsider.

Omegamint ,
@Omegamint@hexbear.net avatar

Yeah it’s hard to say. There are, at least, a couple of things you can do to mitigate the problem without any professional help
