Pepsi is too sweet to mix with American whiskey.

chemical_cutthroat ,
@chemical_cutthroat@lemmy.world avatar

That’s my take away from this. If I ask for a jack and coke or rum and coke, the “and coke” is just as important as the rest. Pepsi isn’t what I want. I would never give the OK to swap out the mixer. I’d rather just drink the liquor straight.

roguetrick , (edited )

I’d be fine with Pepsi for rotgut Scotch mixers like Johnnie Walker Red or Dewar’s White I think, it’s just American whiskey is already sweet as hell.

MisterFrog ,
@MisterFrog@lemmy.world avatar

At risk of being stuck-up: What, and Coca-Cola is not too sweet? Cola is sugar water with a bit of flavour.

frezik , (edited )

It’s a slight difference. Pepsi has 40.9g of sugar for a 375mL serving size, and Coke is 39.8g for the same.

www.rethinksugarydrink.org.au/how-much-sugar

That said, Coke is actually a very complex drink. Which is readily apparent from the various DIY recipes that are floated online. Mixed alcoholic drinks aren’t nearly as complicated as Coke. That “with a bit of flavour” part is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

frezik ,

Can people who “enjoy” a Rum + Coke actually tell?

aaaaace , to fediverse in Let's clarify something: does Bluesky allow federated servers on their network? Is there a list of those independent servers?

Thank you for all the info! Been wondering about various things.

Zooming back, it feels like both the fedi and bluesky aren’t fully resolved yet and might influence each other and a possible further replacement.

For example, I like the PDS/repository idea and think it would help make migrating easier in the fedi. But I would like more granular control over what is shared to relays as opposed to everything.

This looks more like a jumping spider, than a brown recluse.

finitebanjo ,

Yeah Jumping spiders are cute and harmless. Brown recluses are like somebody tried to optimize a scorpion and abandon the stinger concept.

Contramuffin ,

It’s a joke that every spider, no matter what it looks like, will eventually be called a brown recluse (usually by someone who doesn’t know how to recognize a brown recluse)

Jimmyeatsausage ,

Godwin’s law (of spiders)

Krackalot ,

The trick is, if you see it, it isn’t a recluse.

chonglibloodsport ,

Travis has an excellent video about the brown recluse. It goes into rather excruciating detail! He even covers the story about all the false attributions, including a map which shows how it comports with the spider’s range. Interestingly enough, people who live inside its range are much better at correctly recognizing the spider!

Shhalahr ,

Yep. That’s a jumper.

This is a brown recluse: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_recluse_spider#/media/File:Loxosceles_reclusa_adult_male_4.jpg

Honestly this sounds like a bit of a pickle. If I were in your situation I would just use one of the cellular carriers 5g internets. I personally use a T-Mobile 5g internet hotspot with a fresh tomato flashed nether 6700 plugged into it. Then I basically do all of my networking from that. Latency is a fair bit higher (usually about 30-50ms) but upload is significantly better than spectrum.

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Um… I don’t think it matters to me what the characters gender was, but it seemed like the least I could do since I wasn’t going to go back and look up the characters name.

I think you’re reading something into my comment I don’t intend? Strictly referring to a character Ulana Khomyuk from the HBO miniseries here.

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

Ooooo… okay, somehow I was getting like a “did you really have to gender the example?“ vibe… so hopefully that explains my confusion/response.

Maggoty ,

That’s how many historical movies and contemporary shows work though. Like, we all know CSI techs aren’t clearing rooms like SWAT in real life. But the story is far easier to follow if we keep it to a few characters the audience knows.

sramder ,
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

For sure. And ultimately they gave credit where it was due, which is nice but it was a bit jarring. I think that means the filmmakers did their job well and crafted a character I could identify with.

Wanderer ,

Yea they really shoehorned her in. Would have been more accurate to make that character a man.

Oh well, could have been worse. Could have been made by Netflix.

@arraybolt3@theres.life avatar

@SurpriZe If you're using Ubuntu 24.04, you may have a Firmware Updater app preinstalled. Try launching that and see if it can pull the firmware update from LVFS.

Failing that, I think the only safe way is to do the update from Windows. I generally recommend using Hiren's Boot CD PE for that sort of thing.

_edge , to linux in Several windows programs won't work with Wine. Would running a Windows VM be a better option?

Yes. And depending on the the VM and the app, you can get a ‘seamless mode’ that looks like a native Linux app.

VMs work most of the time quite well if you have enough RAM. (The VM always works, some applications will detect unusual hardware and may complain, e.g. unsupported GPU. Any sane software should run, though (e.g. with gpu acceleration).)
