JoMiran , to programmerhumor in Anyone here use assembly?
@JoMiran@lemmy.ml avatar

In college back in 1991. Also had to do PASCAL and FORTRAN but thankfully those two were in a single course.

expatriado ,

I also took PASCAL in the 90s, but it is considered a high level language, and writes similarly to other high lvl languages, assembly has a very different syntax

JoMiran ,
@JoMiran@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh, I know. I meant that we had to take courses on older languages as part of the curriculum. That was a funky little college program. The oddest experience for me was taking Python back in the day as the “new thing” then not seeing it again until it absolutely exploded ~10 years ago. That program is also why I ended up playing with Linux so early on. The professors truly seemed to have a passion for emerging technologies while not wanting anyone to forget what came before. Thankfully, no punch cards.

thejml ,

We used turbo pascal in school in the early 90’s. And it had assembly blocks… which I used copious amounts of because it was the only way to make the IBM PS/1’s do useful graphics.

wildbus8979 , to nostupidquestions in Knife vs. Gun Control?

The corrolary is that there’s essentially no knife control in Canada. There’s no length limit or anything. The law just states that you can’t carry a weapon. But if you have a reasonable reason to be carrying a machete (like going bushwacking) you’re good.

JeromeVancouver ,

I think switch blades are illegal in Canada too, but I could be wrong

lord_ryvan ,

I mean, those are reasonably weapons, no?

wildbus8979 ,

Yeah you’re right, that is one limitation. The rational is that it has no purpose other than being a weapon.

WoahWoah OP ,

I think the difference between “assisted open,” which is almost always legal, and “automatic open” (e.g., switch blades") is very minor. They are both just ways of freeing and locking the blade for use. I don’t think either of them implies they will be used as a weapon. I would guess the laws are just stupid and, as another user pointed out, related to a historical “moral panic.”

Damned greasers and their switchblades and leather jackets. When you’re a Jet, you’re a Jet all the way, from your first cigarette to your last dying day!

wildbus8979 ,

Fair

adespoton ,

There are also length laws and switch laws. I know, because I once had a hunting knife that was slightly over the length limit. The RCMP insisted I grind it down and submit it for inspection.

However, such restrictions are use-based; you can have a set of steak knives that are over the limit, because their intended use is obviously not against humans. But if someone pulls a steak knife on someone in public, they’ll run afoul of the knife laws.

I once sat on a jury for an attempted manslaughter knifing that took place in a kitchen with a steak knife, where both participants were drunk at the time; lots of interesting arguments were made by both sides.

wildbus8979 ,

Unless there’s some provincial law, RCMP was fucking with you. There is no length law.

What is the maximum blades size one is allowed to carry in Canada?

There is no specific blade size restriction for carry in Canadian law. However, the larger the size of the blade, the more difficult it would be to identify it as a tool for everyday use. For example; if you are hunting, then a large fixed blade knife on your side is generally acceptable. However, carrying the same large fixed blade knife on your side while walking downtown in a major city would be a different matter. If you have specific questions, please contact your local law enforcement agency

bladescanada.com/FAQ-Frequently-Asked-Questions

The only reference to knives in the criminal code concerns so called automatic knives:

laws.justice.gc.ca/Search/Search.aspx?txtS3archA1…

There is no law banning the carrying in public knives with sheaths, knives that take both hands to open and any knife with a fixed blade and certain non-prohibited folding knives, assuming they are not carried for a purpose dangerous to public peace or for the purpose of committing a criminal offense.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knife_legislation#Canada

What Size Knife Is Legal To Carry In Canada?

In Canada there’s no specified blade length that makes it legal or not. The knife’s legality is determined by the purpose of carrying the knife and its design.

solidgrue , to linux in How was your experience using Linux in college?
@solidgrue@lemmy.world avatar

Heck, I ran Linux on my college computers back in the 90s. It was just a thing you did. Ah, memories…

Anyhoo, it largely depends on the school but for most intents and purposes Windows, Mac and Linux are interoperable. By that I mean they can generally open, manipulate and share all of the common document formats natively, with some minor caveats.

Many schools also have access to Microsoft O365, which makes the MS Office online suite available as well. All you really need to use that is a web browser.

I work in an office environment these days where Windows, Mac and Linux are all well supported and are in broad use. I use Linux (Debian) exclusively, my one coworker is all-windows and a third is all-mac. Our boss uses Windows on the desktop, but also uses a Macbook. We are able to collaborate and exchange data without many problems.

I would say the two main challenges you’re liable to face will be when Word files include forms or other uncommon formatting structures. LibreOffice is generally able to deal with them, but may mangle some fonts & formatting. Its not common but it does happen.

The other main challenge could be required courseware-- specialized software used in a curriculum for teaching-- and proctor software for when you’re taking exams online. Those might require Windows or Mac

If it ever comes up, Windows will run in a Virtual Machine (VM) just fine. VirtualBox by Oracle is generally free for individual use, and is relatively easy to start up. Your laptop will probably come with Windows pre-installed, so you could just nuke it, install Linux, install VirtualBox, and then install Windows as a VM using the license that came with your laptop. You’d need to ask an academic advisor at the school if that’s acceptable for whatever proctor software they use.

I recommend against dual-booting a Windows environment if you can avoid it. Linux & Windows are uneasy roommates, and will occasionally wipe out the other’s boot loader. It’s not terribly difficult to recover, but there is a risk that could (will) happen at the WORST possible moment. However, it might be unavoidable if they use proctor software that requires windows on bare metal. Again, you’d have to ask the school.

Good luck!

Your laptop will probably come with Windows pre-installed, so you could just nuke it, install Linux, install VirtualBox, and then install Windows as a VM using the license that came with your laptop.

Would you suggest I buy a computer with Windows pre-installed, or a DIY-edition computer (like Framework) with no OS pre-installed?

solidgrue ,
@solidgrue@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, shoot. If you’re gonna roll your own then that’s probably the better play because at least then the firmware won’t be all locked down and you can pick known-compatible parts. Get it with no OS and sort it out later if you need to.

It’s easy enough to buy a Windows license key later on if you need it. The school night even make it available you at a student discount. Boot it from a USB drive, even.

Trainguyrom , to linux in Buying a new computer to run Linux on - suggestions?

If there’s a decent (even online) used market where you live buying a refurbished computer that’s just a few years old can be amazing bang for your buck. 9th-11th gen Intel or Ryzen 2-4th gen. Any of the more business focused lines tend to be fairly well-built and are designed to be relatively long lasting while being relatively well-maintained during their service life. HP Elitebooks, Dell Latitudes, Lenovo Thinkpads, etc.

bloodfart , to linux in Buying a new computer to run Linux on - suggestions?

Get an Apple, thinkpad or dell.

The main thing that determines if a computer can be repaired is parts availability. Those three have great parts availability almost universally.

If you wanna run macOS you need a Mac. The t480 is a good recommendation for thinkpads, but don’t worry about ssds or ram yet, just get the one with the processor and display you want (it’s the midrange 8th gen ones). I don’t know the dell world enough to make a recommendation but someone will do so.

Use the gentoo and arch wikis to check what problems people have out of the box with whatever model you’re looking at.

People will say you need amd. This is either paranoid or based on recent events. Neither apply to you.

People will say to get a framework or some equivalent. They’re expensive and a moral/ethical statement. This doesn’t apply to you.

Trubble , to cat in What non-prescription food/treats do you give your cat with kidney issues?
@Trubble@startrek.website avatar

Ours is 19, has gone blind and deaf (at least mostly, we think she still sees bright light and deep dark shadow contrast) but, she still has one hell of a sniffer on her.

We get some feline lysine in a tube to add a little to our girls food in the evening. Our vet said the lysine and taurine are good for her, may want to verify for your situation. We keep some Temptations Purrree tubes around for an in-between meal hearty snack.Then we found a Bonkers hard treat with taurine too.

And of course catnip, cat grass, and little bits of un-seasoned protein treats when we are cooking (bit of chicken, tiny piece of steak). We’ll actually cut a lil pice off and set it aside before we season, then give it to her cooled as we go to eat. High protein is no longer good for her, but she gets so happy for her little nibbles we can’t help it, and it isn’t very often.

I’ll need to check out the Forza, maybe replace some of her temptation snacking with a little of that. She doesn’t eat a whole lot at once, and due to a dog and greedy little brothers, can’t really have food left to reach easy thus the regular snacking.

cheesymoonshadow OP ,
@cheesymoonshadow@lemmings.world avatar

Sounds like you feed yours the same way we feed Murphy with the restricted diet, catnip and cat grass, and occasional plain meat as a treat.

The Forza has been great. I just found it on Chewy and have been feeding it to Murphy for maybe 3 years now. His blood and kidney levels have been coming back good so the vet said “just keep doing what you’re doing.”

I just feel like he has been eating less lately so just looking for alternatives to maybe entice his appetite. I know he’s old and could just be in decline but we will keep trying until it’s time to say goodbye. He is due for a vet visit though, so we’ll see what they say.

ThanksForAllTheFish ,

Have you tried warming the wet food a little bit to increase the scent? Worked for mine when she was a little grumpy before she got new better anti-arthritis medication.

I always do but my work schedule since June means my husband is the one feeding him and he is too lazy to do the extra steps of warming up the food. :/

Trubble ,
@Trubble@startrek.website avatar

The Temptations tubes may help to get more food in? They have a decent amount of nutrient for a treat product (better than the delectibles) and there are some Churu tubes that are pretty good we found on Chewy too. We just squeeze the whole thing into a dish like it was another meal. It’s all liquid so super easy to ingest. Our girl, Dorito, had been loosing weight and now she is maintaining, which has made us feel so much better, hopefully her too!

otherbarry ,

UPS/FedEx has sucked for a while now, rarely are they cheaper than USPS

Well yeah, USPS should be cheaper. They tend to get bailout money from the U.S. government due to operating at a loss e.g. reuters.com/…/us-senate-approves-50-billion-posta… , UPS/FedEx on the other hand just raise their rates / change services to keep their shareholders happy.

In theory if the USPS was allowed to increase rates as much as any private company then they would be as expensive, if not more, vs UPS/FedEx.

SoJB ,
  1. The USPS is objectively profitable
  2. The reason they posted a loss is because a 2006 bill mandates the USPS to fully fund all employee pensions 75 years in advance. There are full retirement accounts sitting around for employees that aren’t even born yet.
  3. Even then, reliable postal service to all addresses in the country is a basic expectation of the government of the most powerful and wealthy nation in the history of human civilization.

The fact that you start with the premise that the USPS should somehow make profit off being a public service is a self report that you are here in bad faith.

Why are you spreading right wing propaganda?

What is in freefall is the economy for the middle and working class and basic idea that artists and writers should be compensated, period. What has released us into freefall is that making art and crafting words are shit on by society as not a respectable job worth being paid a living wage for.

There are a terrifying amount of good writers out there, more than there have ever been, both in total number AND per capita.

I’ve actually not researched that much about OnlyOffice but I’ll definitely be sure to do that.

eco_game ,

+1 on OnlyOffice, it has 1:1 formatting compatibility with Microsoft Office. Unlike LibreOffice, it doesn’t have to translate documents between odt and docx in the background.

In the same vein, OnlyOffice has poor compatibility with odt files etc.

bobs_monkey ,

I’ve definitely notice weirdness with odt files, but truth be told I damn never run into those, everything is xlsx, docx, etc as I’m interfacing with companies that are firmly MS, but they’re also none the wiser usually. Every now and again there’ll be a formatting issue, especially with Excel, but it isn’t too common thankfully.
