I met a fundamentalist Christian a few years ago, who just came back from overseas. She flew Air Emirates, an openly Muslim airline. She recounted with a malicious smugness how she replaced the Qurans in the seats with bibles. I asked her what good she thought that would do - did she think such a disrespeful act, done with malice, would encourage them to invite Jesus to their bosom. She frowned heavily and said nothing. I asked why even use an airline you have so much hatred for, why not use a good, clean-living, Christian™ airline? She squirmed and mumbled something about Air Emirates being the cheapest. I asked her if someone replaced her bible with a Quran on a plane, would she be receptive to the message of the Quran, or would she just be offended that someone is being malicious towards her holy book of choice. She looked like she was going to cry, and walked away.

I have a feeling airlines don't really care either.

I very seriously considered writing and publishing a book called "Mind Your Own Fucking Business - The Sane Guide To Personal Belief Systems" and aggressively lobbying to have copies of the book in hotels, airplanes etc. It's probably a good thing I don't have enough money to act on my ideas, because it would cause me so much more trouble.

Because social media amplifies and incentivises minority, hateful views to make it seem like everyone is concerned about these things.

The reality is, it’s the same small group of hateful idiots who are always in the spotlight.

In real life, even in small towns, people either don’t care or they celebrate how far we’ve come as a society.

I am ignorant in this field. If not an insect, what is it? [Serious question]

Evilsandwichman ,

Mollusk probably (edit: snails and worms are mollusks)

SmoothLiquidation ,

These are part of their own family of invertebrates.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Onychophora

Insects are a specific family that have 6 legs. So a bee or an ant are insects but a spider or a rolls polly is not.

Classy ,
Badeendje ,
@Badeendje@lemmy.world avatar

Excellent. No notes.

d00ery ,

It’s a Pokémon [not a serious answer]

flora_explora ,

Well… The taxonomy of invertebrates is pretty complicated and diverse and there are many huge groups of invertebrates. Velvet worms (Onychophora) seem to be their own thing, so maybe just think of them as another invertebrate group. Like molluscs (snails, mussels, cephalopods), or tardigrades or nematodes, these are all their own groups as well. But obviously this is all much more complicated if you look at it in detail.

Insects are also invertebrates, but are just one group within the arthropods, which also contain e.g. spiders, crustaceans, millipedes. Maybe a good rule would be that there aren’t any worms in the insects. And that all insects have six legs. So if something has more legs, it’s not an insect.

Hope that helps? The more you dig down into taxonomy, the more interesting it gets!! And insect taxonomy in itself is just so huge and mind-boggling :)

sebsch ,

I can’t help with what it is, but I can say why it can’t be an insect. All insects have per definition exactly 6 legs.

I have trouble at parties where I have to find things to talk about with people I don’t know, but at interest clubs then we’re all there for the same purpose and there’s a clear thing to talk about! If you hit it off with anyone, then you can begin hanging out outside of the club

I first was introduced to hex by a similar post, idk the community, and my first reaction was, "holy shit it, those people are toxic!” maybe it was a complaint about the dunktank. Since then, I've come to recognize how intelligent and sane they actually are.

Abuse begets abuse, and the cycle continues. I do hope my own instance hasn't defederated. I've learned so much, incrementally, and developed a particular fondness for some users. I do feel enriched for them and ml having educated me patiently and kindly. I see them as older siblings who are human, like me. In fact, I'd say there are some I adore. Not hero worship, because that sets is up for disappointment or cult of personality. Just a particular fondness.

Don’t misunderstand, and I wish I knew the OPs tag, but they gave info to research and I quickly adjusted my knowledge to fill in some blanks, but the majority of people were just on the attack. Maybe they needed to vent some stress, which is fine, but there was only less than a handful of people that were giving me a chance. I’d love to discuss opposing views, but if the majority is going to belittle and ridicule me, I’m going to respond in equivalence. Call it pride, but no one person should be treated like that and be convinced to hear an opposing view. It just does not work

Maeve ,

With all respect friend, the error had been linked in this thread and explained multiple times. You'll see it when and if you're ready to see it, I suppose. Wishing you the best. Ciao.

EABOD25 OP ,

No. Not really. I’m pointing out the hypocrisy of political and social discussions from around the world, and people want to act like different perspectives are common sense. If it was common sense, then it would be common knowledge. All that was proven to me is that bias is forever going to be biased, and the world isn’t going to improve social climates because of that bias. Very few people are interested in a dialog on whatever side of the social or political spectrum they’re on. It’s all just a fucking farce, and everyone pays for it

AlternateRoute , to asklemmy in How could you best spent one million dollars, to materially help the world in a lasting way?

1 million dollars doesn’t go that far these days, at the world scale it is almost nothing.

You could however make a lasting difference in your community by making a scholarship, building needed facilities, or doing something else where you directly make sure the funds go where needed and can’t be used for other uses. Lets face it, if you give it to some charities 90% of it will just go to the administration.

    10_0 ,

“1 million dollars doesn’t go that far” depends on what you use it for. Donating it all in one go will not take it far. Investing it in an education for climate science (or paying for some to do climate science) will take it further as you’ll have some leftover to make more of an impact. Also isn’t admin apart of the cost of being a charity org?
