As above; intel will be SO much easier

Macs don’t have a bios. But they boot easily into Linux (again intel)

Enjoy

There is even a Star Trek-ish game where you have to produce to earn money to upgrade the ship for your crew. I get that it is a game mechanic, but seems like a perfect setting to not have money, and just concentrate on the people.

mtchristo , to linux in Linux Directory Structure - FHS

This is one of my biggest gripes stopping me from switching to Linux. I just can’t give-up windows’ partitions. I find Unix/Linux file system to be incompatible with how I like storing my files.

warmaster ,

This image shows how the system stores it’s own stuff. Your junk will go in /home/mtchristo/whatever you want.

If you don’t like that, you can do whatever you want. Linux will let you.

Think of it like in Windows where you have this structure.

Deebster , (edited )
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

That’s an old image, though - Windows has a C:\Users\youruser setup like /home/youruser for a while now.

I find the %APPDATA% thing way less convenient than ~/.config and I’m quite happy when programs have the “bug” that they still use ~/.config on Windows.

warmaster ,

Yeah, but my point is that every OS has system folders. And Linux gives you more freedom.

Deebster ,
@Deebster@programming.dev avatar

Bad wording on my part, I wasn’t disagreeing. My file server has a /files directory because it saves me a few key strokes and because I can.

marx2k ,

You can just create partitions and mount them at whatever path you like.

Hell, you can do /c/not/sure/why/you/like/this/better/clownfarts_penis

corsicanguppy ,

When you run git-bash from an install of the git suite, that’s a valid pathname.

Oh. Just on my system?

mtchristo ,

I like partitions to be at the root of my file system. And dedicate each one to a specific use. And even dedicate a separate hard drive for my personal files. When in need of transfer or repairs just move this drive to another PC and carry on the work while the former PC gets repaired or nuked.

marx2k ,

You can absolutely do this. You can mount partitions anywhere off of /

I have 5 drives in a system and I mount them as /storage1 through /storage5

BigDotNet , to linux in Is there any easy way to install a Linux distribution directly to a USB drive?

Boot from one USB then install into another USB, IDK exactly how the booting will work, I believe you will have to install the boot manager into the USB and then in the machine you want to use your OS you should boot from the same USB.

Never did it but I believe that’s the way it should be.

Dear Milena,

I wish the world were ending tomorrow. Then I could take the next train, arrive at your doorstep in Vienna, and say: “Come with me, Milena. We are going to love each other without scruples or fear or restraint. Because the world is ending tomorrow.” Perhaps we don’t love unreasonably because we think we have time, or have to reckon with time. But what if we don’t have time? Or what if time, as we know it, is irrelevant? Ah, if only the world were ending tomorrow. We could help each other very much.

Pogogunner , to linux in Is there any easy way to install a Linux distribution directly to a USB drive?

I installed from one flash drive with the image (on ventoy) to another flash drive that was plugged in to be the boot drive. On a cheap USB2 drive, it’s unusably slow - so make sure you use the fastest drive you can

thanks_shakey_snake ,

+1 for “it’s unusably slow!”

I tried this last year with Linux Mint, and I learned that a normal USB drive just doesn’t have the read/write speed to even e.g. operate Firefox smoothly. There are different ways to address that, none of which really did the trick for me, so the best bet is to just get a drive with the fastest read/write rate possible. I’ve heard that it can run tolerably well on one of those more performant drives, but I didn’t try it myself.

mechoman444 , to nostupidquestions in I have been to jail in the US. How come they always offer a bible instead of offering you different religious books like a quran?

They don’t… I’m guessing you might have done time in a state prison?

In the feds you can request any approved religious texts you want. Typically the chapel will have said materials available for consumption.

Also most prisons will have large Muslim and Hebrew Israelite populations.

Don_Dickle OP ,

Not prison but county jail in AR. When I was young and stupid. When I was put into my cell or whatever they gave me a bible and I said I don’t need it and they said take it anyway because you are going to need it. I was raised by mom and dad. Dad was a catcholic mom was a baptist so I had to read the whole stupid thing because otherwise mom would give us an ass whooping. But never read the Quran so I thought if they offered or forced a bible on you than you should be able to get a Quran. As an agnostic I thought it was really fucked up when they told me no.

chiliedogg ,

Fun fact, you can’t get a Quran unless it’s in Quoranic Arabic. Translations aren’t considered to be the Quoran, but are instead called things like “Interpretations of the Meaning of the Holy Quran in the English Language”
