@lckdscl@whiskers.bim.boats avatar

Anna’s Archive, Libgen, Mobilism, IRC (I use a self-hosted service called OpenBooks for this). I use Calibre for metadata sorting, plug Kindle in and move books that way and keep it on airplane mode.

Also, new Kindle jailbreak for <= 5.16.2.1.1 if anyone’s interested. Managed to get KoReader on my 10th Gen Basic.

skankhunt42 , (edited )
@skankhunt42@lemmy.ca avatar

Neat, my kindle is in airplane mode 100% of the time too… I never knew you could jailbreak, reading about it now.

Edit: and I’m on 5.14.2 guess I’m going to jailbreak. Amazing, thank you!

ex_06 ,

is there any advantage to jailbreak when i already got no ads and i’m 100% of the time on airplane mode? genuine question, not judging :o

skankhunt42 ,
@skankhunt42@lemmy.ca avatar

This is the bit I read that sold me on it.

But if you do jailbreak a Kindle, you’ll be able to install third-party apps like KOReader, which bring support for eBooks in formats that aren’t natively supported by the stock Kindle software, such as EPUB and CBZ files

naught ,

Weird, I’m like 99% sure epub is supported considering it’s all I download on my stock PW.

praise_idleness ,

Partially, at least for me. Custom fonts won’t work with EPUB. Overall experience is just (marginally) better with converted .azw files.

janguv ,

Amazon actually deprecated the MOBI standard on there and switched to EPUB.

skankhunt42 , (edited )
@skankhunt42@lemmy.ca avatar

I wonder when they did that. I’ve never updated my kindle, it’s never even been on the internet so I’m stuck in 2021/2022.

Either way I have KOreader now and it’s amazing. Just reading that I can connect it to the internet for more features and reading how to do that while blocking amazon. I still might not connect it or I’ll put it on my IOT wifi that doesn’t have internet access.

vaselined ,

I have the same doubt. I had a old first gen pw jailbroken. Recently got 10th gen basic. Not jailbroken yet

lckdscl ,
@lckdscl@whiskers.bim.boats avatar

I didn’t have ads either but being able to use KoReader is a good enough motivation for me.

  • You can customize it a lot to your own liking and they do something clever with page changing that it seems a lot more responsive.
  • Another thing is I used to have to convert epubs to KFX to get nice hyphenation and good typography but on KoReader you seem to be able to customize all those typography things with whatever epub you throw at it.
  • Also, I have a local Calibre OPDS endpoint, you can add that in KoReader and download books over wirelessly. WiFi needs to be on when doing that but with a few tweaks you have read only root partiton so Kindle shouldn’t update.

Overall there are a lot of steps to it, if you’re comfortable with your current setup it’s not worth the hassle/time.

ex_06 ,

thank you!

Tattorack OP ,
@Tattorack@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, so a kindle needs to be jailbroken/rooted for sideloading books.

Also, this is the third mention of turning on airplane mode. Is this to stop Amazon from doing something to the Kindle?

520 ,

Kindle jailbreaking isn't strictly required, especially if all you want to do is sideload books. It's more about if you want homebrew, other customisation options or you just wanna get rid of ads without paying.

The airplane mode is because Amazon has a habit of updating the kindle without your permission.

lckdscl ,
@lckdscl@whiskers.bim.boats avatar

I got ads removed on mine by asking chat support. The only caveat is it needs to be registered to an account. If you get a patient employee and ask kindly that the ads are not appropriate for children, it usually works.

Tattorack OP ,
@Tattorack@lemmy.world avatar

Right… Yeah, I would like to get rid of the ads. It sounds absurd that I pay for the device but then have to pay again to get rid of ads.

FutileRecipe , (edited )

Amazon’s logic is you paid a subsidized/cheaper price that is offset by included ads. You can buy it without ads (more expensive, obviously) from the start.

davepleasebehave ,

Currently I torrent books (legally of course) and then send the e-pub book to my kindle through the Kindle app. works a treat.

now I just have to find the attention span to read a book

SomeoneElse ,

I don’t turn airplane mode on and I haven’t jailbroken it. I download all my books from Anna’s archive on my phone and then send them to my kindle email address. The books appear on my kindle in seconds. No DRM issues. I have the oasis because I’m a big reader and I highly recommend it.

mesamunefire ,

Not necessarily, Calibre makes this easy

janguv ,

As others have said – nope. You can get a cheap enough Kindle without ads (and yes, it is absurd that there’s an ad-version in the first place), and sideloading is a piece of piss. Either use Calibre or set up a Kindle email address. I mostly do the latter these days. The only downside (and the main upside to using KoReader, I would think) is that you don’t get the full range of typography options sending over EPUBs this way – you would have to do a KFX conversation first (again possible with Calibre, but a bit of faff).

100% science based dragon MMO

HawlSera , (edited )

I actually thought of a ridiculous concept for an mmo, not so much an mmo, but a response to my frustrations with World of Warcraft, and how the most play race was human and the most played class was warrior. You know the one combination that you can actually be in real life, human Warrior.

It gave me an amusing thought, then if I ever ran a fantasy-based mmo, there would be absolutely no human option, and no realistic class options, like you wouldn’t be able to pick a class that you could definitely do in real life.

And the first major expansion would introduce the scientist class, and be all about humans finding this fantasy world. And just make that the main selling point you could play as boring Mundane Human doing real world stuff. Just a little social experiment to see how people would react… The humans would definitely have a mad scientist vibe, so it wouldn’t be completely boring.

volvoxvsmarla ,

True. Apart from mediocre memes and the same news over and over there is not much to do here if you aren’t into tech. It might actually be good if you spend too much time on reddit, but then again there’s also a sense of community and, let’s be honest, mindless relaxation in communities like makeup addiction, new parents, AITA or moldly interesting. havokdj ,

Not to mention that some of the things speculated are not even things you can really give the dude shit about. So he went put with someone for 10 days and it didn’t work out? That automatically makes him a bad person. The boner thing can absolutely be excused too, the male body is literally designed to erect the penis upon physical stimulation. Some men can have this happen from friction of their clothes alone.

Some of the other shit like the appropriate age thing is valid, but you can’t give him shit for the statement though because the news has created a scary place for men that are sexually active.

Basically the main thing I got from this article is “Wow, Henry Cavill is a man with a penis, he should be demonized! He also values the source material in his roles as well, what blasphemy!”

Sharpiemarker , (edited )

Some of the other shit like the appropriate age thing is valid, but you can’t give him shit for the statement though because the news has created a scary place for men that are sexually active.

This is 100% incorrect. Men don’t feel unsafe approaching women because of the MeToo movement. Only incels and rapists are concerned, and they should be.

The fact that other men are parroting this tired bullshit is ridiculous.

No, it’s not any more unsafe for men now than it was before MeToo. False accusations of sexual assault and rape haven’t skyrocketed. It’s not a thing. So stop spreading misinformation.

havokdj ,

100% incorrect

That’s not 100% incorrect because I actually know people like this. Yes it does not apply to everyone but to ignore that it has affected normal men to some capacity would be ridiculous.

Keep in mind that I’m not saying there is anything wrong with itself, I think it is an awesome movement that helps put power in the hands of victims, I am simply stating that there are people who are not victims that abuse the movement for attention or financial gain which have hurt innocent PEOPLE, not just men. Everything good will always have a downside, that is just how it is.

Sharpiemarker ,

I am simply stating that there are people who are not victims that abuse the movement for attention or financial gain which have hurt innocent PEOPLE, not just men. Everything good will always have a downside, that is just how it is.

The difference is, you don’t criticize a movement because of some outliers. And bringing up outliers in a movement just makes you seem like you have an agenda, or in this case like you’re defending rapists.

havokdj ,

How am I criticizing a movement by making it aware that these things happen?

makes you seem like you have an agenda, or in this case like you’re defending rapists.

Oh fuck off, this conversation is done. If you genuinely somehow think it looks like I’m defending rapists based off what I said, then you are one of the last people who need to be involved in a legal movement. Remember, it is innocent until proven guilty, just because I’m not bloodthirsty to put someone in prison for twenty years before any evidence comes out doesn’t mean I do not support a movement whatsoever. I’m simply stating the fact that outliers like that HURT the movement, if you somehow cannot see that, then I cannot converse with you further.

In October 2015, 32-year-old Cavill fell for a 19-year-old Bristol University student at Mahiki nightclub in London. Her name was Tara King, and Cavill went public with their relationship shortly after it began.
In 2018, Cavill engineered a self-made disaster with his astonishingly insensitive remarks about how the movement inconvenienced his love life.

According to a leaked transcript from the Deux U by DeuxMoi podcast, an anonymous source claimed that Cavill’s behavior on the set of The Witcher was distressing for some of his female colleagues. The source claimed that Cavill immersed himself in gaming and underwent noticeable personality changes on set in Season 2 of the series. The actor was said to deliberately sabotage the work of producer and showrunner Lauren Hissrich and the female writers on the show. According to the source, Cavill habitually disregarded and overlooked the women, undermining their ability to do their jobs. Instead, he is said to have bonded with a male writer and took to writing scenes himself without consulting with his other colleagues. The source also suggested that Cavill’s misogyny increased as work on new episodes of the show progressed, creating a challenging and oppressive environment for female staff.

reverendsteveii , to nostupidquestions in Why do people say that "return to office" is about raising commercial real estate prices?

What you’re seeing is the incestuous relationship between government and private enterprise that is characteristic of late stage american capitalism. Everything depends on people spending money, so businesses get tax breaks and other incentives from metropolitan areas for operating in those metropolitan areas. Imagine you have a company that employs 400 people in an office building downtown. Those 400 people will need to park their cars, they’ll buy coffees in the morning, they’ll buy lunch, they’ll go out to happy hour with their coworkers on fridays. Every one of those transactions benefits business owners in the city, and for every one of those transactions the city takes a cut. Now imagine that company goes full, permanent WFH. The office is vacant. The diner down the street closes. That parking garage that was built to meet a demand that simply isn’t there anymore is simply useless. Tax income drops for the city. Everyone whose livelihood depended on the manufactured demand created by colocation is in a lot of trouble now. The only people who aren’t getting smashed are employees, who now no longer have to pay to park, can make their own coffee the way that everyone has been telling them to for years now, can eat their own food at home or order delivery from the places closest to them rather than the place closest to the office, zoom happy hours mean they’re not spending money at the bar after work, this entire microeconomy that popped up to serve the needs of employees who had no choice but to all be in one place at one time starts to collapse. So you’re right to be suspicious that companies that pay rent are invested in keeping the rent high, but there are a lot of knock-on costs associated with a business district collapsing and there’s also a lot of carrot-and-stick from local/state governments in an effort to keep people in the office and keep them spending money near the office.

Oh thats the thing, yeah. There’s definitely something to transition to and given the way demand and prices have skyrocketed that thing is probably housing. The problem is that capitalism handles transitions as gracefully as evolution does. That is to say, the things that are wrong die screaming and make room for something that fits better.

The roles are intended to be project manager rather than dictator; the person is still expected to solicit opinions and delegate tasks to others. He gets frustrated really quickly when he doesn’t get his way entirely and will get to a point where he doesn’t hear other people’s perfectly reasonable views.

But it’s been this way forever, it’s his personality. He knows it. A few of us are pretty good at calling attention to his behavior in a way that he doesn’t feel attacked by and he’ll chill out. One just goes toe to toe more aggressively with him and that tactic works sometimes too.

    If you were to use exactly one second at meeting a person it would take you 257 years to meet everyone alive on earth at this moment

    Well I don’t need to meet everybody. There’s no need to meet anyone who doesn’t match my sexual preferences, so that’s half right there. Then we can also cut everyone who’s sexual preferences I don’t meet, as well as anyone outside of a given age range (most of the people on earth are much younger than me and would be inappropriate for me to date). We can probably get that down to about 50-60 years. (At one second per person).

    The thought experiment was just an attempt to show how hard it is to wrap our minds around big numbers. Even a tangible number such as the amount of people in the world.
