At least you’ll be alive instead of cannon fodder

I don’t think the military is dying at a noticeable rate, especially as “cannon fodder.” A quick Google says deaths by hostile action hasn’t broken the triple digits annually over the last decade. I also didn’t really look at the other deaths, so feel free to dive into that side.

if they draft it’s because cannon fodder is needed.

That’s a big if, as you noted US hasn’t drafted in forever. But even if they did draft, the US hasn’t used “cannon fodder” tactics for several decades. Their technology is so advanced (and military budget/spending so high) they don’t need to in order to win. Trench warfare ain’t really a thing anymore.

I haven’t tested it personally, but I think GrapheneOS (easily the best Android OS for Pixels, in my opinion) has had it for Pixel 8s since the end of October 2023. Here’s a quick guide I saw: …grapheneos.org/…/9775-pixel-8-desktop-mode-guide…

FutileRecipe ,

I’m hoping for a Pixel Tablet 2 with this (Pixel Tablet doesn’t have it, but the Pixel 8 does for some reason) and MTE security capability, and I’ll transition to that with GrapheneOS over a laptop.

Apple is bringing RCS to the iPhone in iOS 18 (www.theverge.com)

Apple has announced that its Messages app will support the RCS messaging standard in iOS 18. RCS offers more advanced features compared to traditional SMS, including higher-quality media, typing indicators, and end-to-end encryption. This move will improve messaging between iOS and Android devices, which currently rely on the...

Yeah billy should be build IUDs not 3d printed guns

I see the /s but…The Ukraine war videos don’t show how to build IEDs, though. And even if they did, who would the parents sue? Ukraine, a nation at war? As opposed to 3D printed guns show you how to make them, and you could try to sue the gun company who it belongs to. And YouTube in both cases.

we didn’t do a good job transitioning from religious to secular values in that way.

A lot of religions were founded on and/or expanded by violence (Pilgrims to America, Knights Templar, Spanish Inquisition, etc), so I don’t remotely think “religious to secular” is the reason.

So is bullshitting. More so, only human minds can bullshit.

This chud uploaded potentially sensitive information to a public service.

A bill draft, which eventually/maybe gets signed and is public by its very nature is sensitive?

People really need education on how to intelligently use these services.

Agreed on principle, but I don’t see how what he did was wrong…other than calling ChatGPT a subject matter expert.

Is there a Lemmy community like R4R? If there is, I can’t find one.

Just did a search, and there are 3 with none active.

We need hardware requirements so that not just pixel phones can get grapheneOS.

GOS has strict hardware requirements to increase security that currently only Pixels meet. They won’t, and shouldn’t, compromise their standards which would give you a weaker OS. Want GOS on other vendors? Convince those vendors to up their hardware game.

FutileRecipe ,

Unfortunately the fact that NFC can’t be used on anything that’s rooted anymore is kind of a deal breaker.

NFC can be used on GOS, and they frown on rooting.

If I could use google pay and my normal banking apps with GrapheneOS I would switch to it today.

It’s due to PlayIntegrity API wanting a “Google certified OS,” which is ironically less secure than hardware attestation that GOS supports. I doubt Google would change their model, but your bank might. Some banks do support GOS, and they have changed at the request of their customers before. Send them the GOS documentation and you might get lucky.

FutileRecipe ,

The difference is that you are expected to pay. Louis and FUTO are very explicit about this.

I don’t really follow them, but I did skim the Grayjay FAQ, and it never says that. Just that they make money by selling licenses, no subscription, and it works identically without paying. I don’t suppose you have a source that is more explicit than the official Grayjay FAQ page?

case in point: people still use twitter.

And WhatsApp over Signal/Molly.

Most browsers I run into, you can search from the address bar. You can also disable or point to a different search engine, if you want. So you could skip going to the site. That aside…most browsers would accept google.com and not need the full www

I say most anecdotally as I haven’t tested them all.

FutileRecipe ,

I know that’s the point, which is why I said it. The person I replied to asked if they were missing something, so I was attempting to educate them on said point. Then they edited their post to add the /s after the fact.

I don’t know, sounds reasonable chief.

They want to talk to everyone so they’re blocking someone/anyone? That does not sound logical. If that instance defederates, all that person has to do is just not use them as their home instance. They’re saying they want to talk to everyone, but they’re going out of their way to not do so (by blocking an instance, for whatever reason). Makes no sense to me.

FutileRecipe ,

Is Eternity still in development? I don’t think there has been a release for 6+ months.

FutileRecipe ,

With most PC things (RAM, disk space, CPU, etc etc), too much is better than too little, provided you have the resources.

FutileRecipe ,

I have left, I just view Reddit…

So you haven’t left Reddit. Like saying you left Google but still Google search without logging in.

FutileRecipe ,

Nobody is doing that now, with regular money, either.

I think it’s more for ACH between banks as well as some banks have limits. Also, a government literally stepped in to actively block people’s accounts. Just because you can swipe your card and buy a soda, doesn’t mean there aren’t restrictions or people being blocked.

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said Thursday financial institutions have moved quickly to freeze the accounts of people linked to the demonstrations in Ottawa, leaving an unknown number of protesters in financial limbo

cbc.ca/…/ottawa-protests-frozen-bank-accounts-1.6…

FutileRecipe ,

But even if I have a server, I’ll have to have my own separate Internet if I really want to be able to pay unrestrictedly.

Separate Internet? I mean, yes, you do need Internet. Not sure what you mean by “separate.” And you don’t need a server (node), though they are handy for privacy. You could choose one that is reputable.

Otherwise the government would just shut down my internet connection, right?

If they knew where it/your Internet was. All you really need is your phone or PC. You could use a cafe or library or cell tower or etc.

FutileRecipe ,

Yes, you need an Internet connection at some point. This can be a cafe, a library, an office, your house, friend’s house, etc. As for controlled by the government, well, that depends on your country.

Worst case, if possible, you can move countries. I understand that might not be feasible, but my point is, you can move countries to escape the government and Internet restrictions. But the government locks your account/bank? Moving countries doesn’t fix that, and you’re locked out of any money you had there.

Why isn’t Rumble an option?

For most people who refuse to use it, it’s probably because they view it as more a haven for extremism and hate speech, as it seems to have made its niche by allowing those who were banned elsewhere (not always a bad thing…depends on offense).

Most of Rumble’s prominent accounts are run by individuals, not organizations, and about a quarter have been banned or demonetized on other social media sites. The Center’s study examined 200 prominent accounts on Rumble, selected from those with the most followers. As of June 2022, about eight-in-ten accounts (78%) were individuals while 21% were organizations. About a fifth of these prominent Rumble accounts (22%) have been banned or demonetized on other platforms.

Guns, abortion and LGBTQ issues were among the subjects that prominent Rumble accounts focused on in June 2022. A review of posts from these 200 prominent Rumble accounts found that about half posted about guns and gun rights (49%) or abortion (48%), 44% posted about LGBTQ issues, and 42% posted about the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. These posts came amid widespread discussion of major events and issues that were regularly covered in the news at the time.

I think I’m going to skip this generation for Tablet 2, whenever that is. I’m hoping for the addition of Desktop Mode and hardware memory tagging support / MTE to make the tablet easier to replace/act as a desktop and be even more secure.

While I liked Niagara for what it tries to do, it’s price for a launcher was steep…

Quality often is, and it’s not terribly steep, in my opinion, if you consider that it’s the gateway into your phone and is used practically every time you unlock your phone. I personally opted for the lifetime subscription to not deal with any monthlys.

Safest way of using WeChat

I live in Canada. My girlfriend is Chinese (also living in Canada), and while we are able to communicate via SMS, her mobile carrier isn’t the best, and so there have often been issues for us with regular texting. See Exodus…

Hard for me to take anything they say seriously when they say Facebook does not contain any trackers:

We have not found code signature of any tracker we know in the application.

reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/en/…/latest/

Edit: I’m not saying WeChat is clean, just that I don’t exactly trust Exodus for tracker reporting.

FutileRecipe ,

If you actually bothered to read…

I did read, and it changed nothing about what I said. Let’s revisit: did it detect Facebook, which I think we can all agree is invasive, as having trackers? No? The “why” of it doesn’t seem particularly relevant as we are just looking for trackers in apps.

FutileRecipe ,

People really need to just stfu about a certain other app. If ya know, ya know. Otherwise stop advertising it you morons…When you mention YT and IMMEDIATELY bring THAT up publicly, you’re not helping anyone.

Do you really think that Google is only going to take down an app or adjust the API based on some comments, posts, articles?

“Yo, Neal, did you see what that one person on Lemmy said? We gotta crack down on this API to fix that.”

FutileRecipe ,

I seriously doubt banning the entirety of… non-conforming third party app users is something they would loose sleep over if it means stopping that in its tracks.

They would do it happily.

I know, API, Spoofing, Ect. I know. You’ve more faith in that than myself. To actually believe there isn’t anything they can do to go the extra mile and end it, seems extremely nieve imo.

You’re not quite getting what I’m saying. I think they absolutely would/will crack down on this, but they’re going to do that regardless of what we say here. I don’t think our comments are going to push them into doing it faster, and us not saying anything is going to make them go slower. With the resources/money/monitoring/tech/etc they have, they are well aware of all these tools before most users of them are. Us saying nothing is not keeping a secret, nor is it guiding their actions. You give our comments too much weight, and much more than they will, if they even think of us.

no one is promising to end democracy

Didn’t one candidate say they would literally be a dictator…“but only on day one.” I find it hard to trust anyone who ways they’d be a dictator any amount of time, and then stop. Dictatorship and democracy are polar opposites.

FutileRecipe ,

every president is a dictator day one, rolling back previous administration policy and implementing their own.

That’s not what a dictatorship is. A dictatorship is where one person (the dictator) has almost complete control over the government with few, if any, restrictions. Executive orders can only be within the President’s authority, and can also be overturned by Congress or the Supreme Court. To link executive orders to a dictatorship shows a misunderstanding of executive orders, dictatorships, or both.

Also, in the quote of being a “dictator for just one day,” executive orders were not mentioned, if I remember correctly. And no democratic President should ever think of themselves as a dictator or wish they were one.

FutileRecipe ,

no one is accusing trump of being a knowledgeable statesman.

That was actually you who linked them, not him. And they shouldn’t be linked. Executive orders are not a dictatorship. But let’s say he meant, even though he’s famous for saying what he means with no filter.

Even after campaigning for it, holding the office for 4 years, presumably keeping an eye on his successor for 4 years, and now campaigning for it again? You’d think he’d know the basics of what is a democracy, what is a dictatorship, what executive orders do, and what do the different branches of government roughly do…you know, the basics that were taught in middle school, and elaborated on in high school. These aren’t niche laws or obscure cases we’re talking about, but what should be common sense to the common man…much more so for someone who’s running for the job. Willful ignorance is not an excuse, especially at that level…if that’s what this is.

FutileRecipe ,

they are literally creating policy by dictate. your pet definition seems crafted to exclude this obvious use of dictate.

Someone who “dictates” is not necessarily a dictator. These are not my “pet definitions” but accepted definitions of what a dictator/dictatorship is in the political sphere. It’s called context.

No one in the government should say “I’m going to dictate policy that I have control over, but this policy can be overturned by the other two branches. Thus, I’m a dictator.” That’s not what that word means. You are trying to use a nonspecific definition out of context to justify defending a wannabe dictator.

FutileRecipe ,

can you substantiate this claim, that governing by dictate is not an accepted definition"in the political sphere".

Because it’s context. No, I don’t think there’s an official “when talking about X, only this definition of this word can mean this” book. But I honestly feel like you’re arguing in bad faith or being obtuse on purpose. For example, I feel like you’re arguing “a bad story came out about republicans…how do we know they meant members of the GOP? One definition is “favoring, supporting, or advocating a republic,” so just maybe they’re talking about people who like the game (or characters in) Star Wars: The Old Republic… that’s about republics, and they never mentioned party…now that we’re on about parties, maybe they meant a rave?”

If you’re not doing that on purpose, let me assure you that when people are talking about a leader of a government (as the President is) and the word “dictator” comes up about them, no one ever means merely someone who dictates. They always mean leader of a dictatorship.

while we’re on it, what do you define as “the political sphere”?

Relating to politics, especially members of/in charge of politics.

After Nova was sold, I switched to Lawnchair for a bit. But development was slow, so I switched to Niagara Launcher. Welp, back to Lawnchair for a bit.

FutileRecipe OP ,

Because it’s new and shiny and two years in the making. Open source never hurts, either. But Lawnchair is also a more conventional launcher with the app drawer and home screens. Niagara is pretty unique. So if you really like Niagara, I wouldn’t change as they’re very different.

Too bad the translation’s not really accurate here. It should say “god damn!” GYATT DAYYUM

tl;dr: gyatt is almost exclusively used to mean, “god damn, phat ass.”

Except it is accurate, in shorthand and meaning. Gyatt started off to mean “god” and people would even say “gyatt damn.” Then it moved to be fully “gyatt dayyum” to mean “god damn” as you noted…and then abbreviated to just “gyatt.”

Then it evolved to the present day where gyatt is mostly used to say, “god damn, that’s a phat ass” or some variation. When something is terrible or your disappointed, you don’t really say “gyatt it” or even “gyatt dayyum it” to mean “god damn it” or if you’re pissed off at someone, you don’t say “gyat you / gyatt dayyum you” to mean “god damn you.” But if someone with a phat ass walks by, you’ll say “GYATT,” to mean "god damn, that’s phat ass.
