Because Trek fans were the first to organize conventions. They started out small in the late 60s. Now every single weekend, somewhere on this planet, there’s a Trek convention being held. The conventions also raise massive money for charity. They are the nerds other nerds want to be, in terms of organization. I’m here for the memes.
You are right that Star Trek conventions were the first time a single show was the focus of a convention, and the Star Trek conventions lead to things like ComicCon.
I’m 55 I find young women very attractive but I wouldn’t have sex with them. Sex changes as you get older. It slows down and it’s more psychological than physical.
I was starting to question myself here lol everyone acting like a hot 20 year old is no longer hot when you’re older meanwhile I see someone I consider attractive they’re always attractive, I just won’t approach them if they’re young.
The only way this doesn’t work is “upward” for me. 40s weren’t attractive when I was younger but they are now, but a hot 20 year old will always be hot to me (I think).
It’s genuinely Die Hard. Calling it a Christmas movie used to be something I said for fun, but somewhere along the line, watching it at Christmas has become an actual tradition that I look forward to
I don’t mean it like that. I’m not trying to meme or anything. Yeah, meming is why I first started watching it at Christmas, but it’s long stopped being about the meme and and debates about whether it’s a Christmas movie.
I watch it every Christmas now because it has become a genuine tradition for me
Die Hard at its heart it is a story of a man trying to bring his family together. His presence in the story is one of traditional family values thrown into a world where they aren’t valued.
Absolutely in the same boat as you. Used to be home alone (1&2) but the past 5 years or so the first Christmas movie I put on is Die Hard and I can’t imagine that changing anytime in the future.
If you’re the kind of person who counts Die Hard as a Christmas movie, I seriously suggest you watch The Long Kiss Goodnight as a contender. Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson co-starring in a Christmas flavored spy adventure roadtrip.
Having a rock-solid Debian stable as a desktop with up-to-date softwares when it matters. It sounded impossible a few years ago but that might be achievable now with Flatpak. That’s awesome.
I nees to try this. I’m currently running Debian stable + Flatpak, but not being able to access all local files from things like Firefox is really forcing me to jump through hoops.
Sway with xdg-desktop-portal-wlr. I can open a single file, but not directories of static content. So CSS, images, links all fail to load. Opening a single image or PDFs work fine.
Exactly what I usual say, the best of the two worlds. There are still a few annoyance though, the theme integration part that is easy to fix and not being able to get Ungoogled working with a KeePassXC when both are Flatpaks
We have a fork specifically for cat food. It’s different from all our other forks (we bought it separately) and it’s used exclusively for ‘mashing’ and dividing wet cat food.
We love our cats and we love to give them the food they like but wet cat food is disgusting and we’d rather not risk ‘cross contamination’.
EDIT: I know contamination isn’t t actually a thing but keeping a separate cat fork is a victimless crime ok?
We have a similar spoon for dog food. My wife wasn’t paying attention and it got ripped up in the garbage disposal several years ago. It is easily identified by its jagged edges.
Try not buying paté and use chunks or slivers instead. Also pet food is made with the meat from stores like Walmart that was getting too close to the expiration date. It should be totally safe for humans to consume and doesn’t have a risk of contaminating you and making you sick.
You are lucky. My mom used the same dishes we used ourselves for the cat food and would rinse them off in the sink with a sponge. And she used a different dish every time so no bowl or plate in the house was safe. Made me feel icky eating dinner out of a cat food bowl but she thought I was strange for caring.
Enamel is non-porous afaik so you’re completely safe. That’s one of those natural human responses that’s actually unwarranted if you consider modern materials (and the fact that cat food is really just meat)
I use a regular fork when mashing dog food, and the fork goes directly into the dishwasher afterwards. I can’t fathom what kind of cross contamination that would lead to.
We’ve got something similar. The fork we have came in a pack of two. The one we don’t use for cat food is in the drawer with all the other forks and nobody ever uses it.
I’ve always called any fork that doesn’t match the set the “dog fork”, since when I grew up this was basically why we had the smaller, weird fork for our dogs and cats.
I’ve not had a dog since I was a kid, but any time my wife has accidentally brought cutlery from her work place that ends up in our drawer, I call it the dog fork.
Travel companies have been doing this shit for years. The most egregious is that Apple users tend to get shown higher prices overall but it’s been around in many forms for a long time. They call it “Dynamic Pricing”
I remember Amazon being called out for doing this a few years back (like the early to mid 2010s if I’m recalling correctly). Theirs was particularly ridiculous because you could be on their site logged in, and in an incognito tab logged out, and be seeing different prices reported on the same product pages.
Sandor Clegane is #4 most related topic when searching “Whinge” on google trends even though that episode aired several years ago. It’s a reasonable assumption. Go look for yourself.
Can we not do that Reddit thing where people just accuse people of bad faith or attribute literally everything they don’t agree with to a fallacy or some such? If you or the other person had literally taken 30 seconds to look at Google trends, you might have even come to the same conclusion yourselves.
This is the kind of act we really don’t need around here. We have enough trolls on other forums. At least try and act with a hint of mutual respect here dude.
But no I remember this as well. It was quoted a ton after and gained a lot of traction. If you look at google trends since you want a “language statistician,” you can see “Sandor Clegane” is still the 4th most associated topic when “whinging” was searched this past week even though that episode aired 5+ years ago.
It’s easy to be snarky on the Internet. Maybe next time you should just do a cursory Google search or ask for clarification with a little more humility/good intent instead of being needlessly rude and challenging.
I just saw it getting used by non-british people after the show when I didn’t before. It’s an anecdote. I don’t have statistics and if you care enough to prove me wrong I’ll accept it’s confirmation bias
I’m American but I like a lot of British TV so I was already familiar with it but I definitely noticed the uptick. It’s not the most famous scene but people like it enough to have it clipped on YouTube
Men are often socialized to believe that showing emotion is reserved for children, women, and the weak. They are often taught that emotions are in direct opposition to “strength” and “manliness”.
Unfortunately, if men show emotion, they are often criticized and made fun of (often by other men), calling their masculinity into question. As if having emotions make you weak or less of a man.
Emotions are not a “weak” trait. Emotions are a human trait.
Men need to work hard to be supportive and accepting of other men showing emotion. De- stigmatize emotional men. Stop showing sensitive men or men who struggle or cry as “weak” or worthy of mockery. This is such an antiquated view and needs to be abolished.
Support your bros. Become comfortable with emotional expression. This will help struggling men everywhere, I guarantee it.
Men show emotions all the time. The problem is that the only “acceptable” emotion is anger or resentment. People of any gender validate other peoples feelings based on their own experiences. Because women’s emotions are invalidated as weak or useless, women tend to be more sympathetic to others who experience that same invalidation.
In the US, PhDs, in STEM at least, are fully funded. Either by research or teaching assistanship. This is the same as in Europe and students are frequently exchanged.
You’ll only be paying for yourself if you’re in art history or something stupid like that (even then you could get a TA) or you haven’t demonstrated that you’re smart enough to get a PhD.
Edit: it’s so weird how this completely factual statement has been so controversial. I actually went through this process.
But even with an immutable distro you don’t have to reboot. The updated image just gets downloaded in the background and booted into when you restart. There is no harm in still being booted from the old image id you don’t specifically need anything only included in the new one. Nothing forces you to reboot.
Silverblue is my daily driver. Everything is in flatpaks, which update automatically, or in distrobox which I have a bash script that updates automatically.
System updates download in the background and just boot automatically the next time you boot up. I just ignore them.
