The Journey to the West, translated by Anthony C. Yu. Given that it is 100 chapters long and I’m still at chapter 6 it’s gonna take a long time for me to finish, so I’m thinking about reading another book alongside it.

I’m reading Diary by him right now!

Oooo Diary is great!

Sergio ,

I’ll have to check it out!

ThorrJo , to selfhosted in Recommend me a good and cheap VPS.

That price is pretty fair for what you get.

I’ve had really good experiences with Ramnode for years. I run VPN endpoints, reverse proxies, and various web apps in a couple of their data centers and have had about as close to zero problems as possible, plus their support is quite competent when something does break. Performance is what I expect 99% of the time.

Before that, Linode was good for me as well, and I still have friends who like it.

If you do try Ramnode out, here’s my affiliate code, I am broke as fuck and really appreciate it. clientarea.ramnode.com/aff.php?aff=4335

kratoz29 OP ,

That price is pretty fair for what you get.

So you think with my usage that is money well spent that could not be reduced by a similar option?

ThorrJo ,

The lower you go in price, in general the more problems you’ll have with overselling, poor management, poor support, etc.

After coming back to this thread and reading some more comments, it sure looks like I could save up to $3 a month over what I pay for cheap VPS at Ramnode, but in all my years of being a Ramnode customer, they haven’t pissed me off, and their support has always been excellent. I have no desire to move, and I’m somebody who has very little money, so cheaper hosting would make a difference.

Just a data point, good luck in your search!

ThorrJo , to selfhosted in Is WordPress with ActivityPub Plugin a good setup to host my own technical blog?

I’ve heard bad things about this plugin which scared me bc I’m planning to use it on 2 sites

kelvinjps , to technology in Why shouldn't anyone switch to iOS?

Be sure if another apps or features are as important for you as those you said Face ID, iMessage, home screen UX, battery life. For example, not being able to run syncthing on IOS is a dealbreaker for me. Another app is minimalism launcher, etc…

sfera ,

not being able to run synching

Do you mean syncthing? I’m just asking for clarification, because that’s an important piece of software for me.

kelvinjps ,

Yeah, that’s what I meant

All the ones mentioned mostly. But also Linux in the Ham Shack.

Midou , to nostupidquestions in Should I use Matrix for Messaging?

Just stick to signal, matrix can be used the same way but it's a lot more complicated and requires involvement in keeping your backup key safe, otherwise you'll lose every encrypted message! Signal is similar to whatsapp. (which is obviously...a popular app...which should already explain the simplicity of setting it up.)

counselwolf , to nostupidquestions in When someone is venting, am I supposed to say something?

I don’t understand venting.

I know I’m supposed to only listen to it, but I just get frustrated for some reason. Maybe I’m doing it wrong.

Chozo ,

It could be that you're looking for a solution to the venter's problem. A lot of times, when somebody is venting, they're not actually looking for a solution. More often than not, they already know the solution to their problems, but the emotions of the situation are overwhelming them.

Obviously, things vary from person to person, so your mileage may vary on this, but I find that if somebody's venting to you about something, it's best to just absorb what they're saying, and let them get out whatever it is they need to get out. It's usually best not to inject your own interpretations into the conversation. For instance, if you're looking for a way to interject, instead of something like "He probably said that because such and such", reposition it to something like "Why would he say such and such?" Letting the venting person come up with their own thoughts and explanations for the situation may be the most beneficial thing for them in that moment. They might not actually know why the other person said something to them, but this can prompt a moment of insight, which can help the person understand why they're feeling the way they're feeling.

Venting is more about processing thoughts and feelings, as opposed to brainstorming actual solutions. If you're listening to somebody vent, first off: Thanks, you're a good friend for being there for people in need. And second, just keep the focus on the emotional responses to the situation, as opposed to the details of what may be happening, and you should be good.

Maybe that was their game with the federation stuff. “Hey we didn’t start this, we were just following suit on this open source project”. Anyway this logic wouldn’t fly in any court, they can’t have a copyright on text-based social media. They can only own their branding. Musk is just throwing a hissy fit again

I think Elon is trying to say they’re stealing IP because lots of the Twitter employees he fired went to work on Threads. This is probably where the fediverse stuff comes in clutch, as they’re just implementing ActivityPub, so it’s not like it’s industry secrets or anything.
