Marvin42 , to gaming in Stray is one of the best short games I've ever played.

I’m rather new to Playstation. What do you mean with ‘it’s going away soon’? If I have a Playstation subscription and ‘buy’ it (for free, as part of the subscription) can I keep playing it? Or do I need to complete it before a cut of date?

patchymoose OP ,
@patchymoose@beehaw.org avatar

As long as you download it now, then you can keep the game as long as you’re a member of PS+. So if you even think you might play it in the future, download it now. Once it rotates off the subscription, then it won’t be available for download anymore (but people who already downloaded it can keep it).

It's up to the instance owners and the users. I can see some instances running on donations, some will run adverts and everything in between. Users will choose instances they prefer. That's the beauty of federation.

Matthew , to nostupidquestions in What was so special about the Apollo app?

Apollo was big in the headlines because its developer was the most vocal about the API changes.

As for why people used third-party apps, it’s mostly a preference thing. Something to note is that reddit didn’t always have an official app. Everyone using reddit before 2016 had to use a third-party app if they wanted to use reddit on their phone. A lot of the apps we watched get shut down, especially the ones on android (RiF, Sync, BaconReader, etc) have been around for a long time, and had loyal user bases.

Apollo was younger than the official app, but it was likely favored by those who had used Alien Blue (a very popular third-party app for iOS that was bought by Reddit and turned into the official app)

The Count of Monte Cristo. I did like it, but I expect the abridged version would have been better for me. There were parts that were a struggle to get through. It just seems like the unabridged version is more recommended, so I felt compelled to get through it

There’s a reason behind it. When it was first published, it was serialised, so Dumas had an incentive to drag it along, also it romanticizes travels around Europe because it was fancy at the time.

The plot behind it is still one of the most compelling I have ever read and a revenge story that few modern works of art can match.

Lemmy is storing users data

The only “personal data” that you are storing would be their email, perhaps IP addresses. As long as you are not altering your instance, placing third-party analytics or ads, you are good.

feitingen ,

The main issue would be thay users can post personally identifiable information themselves.

For example, I can say that my social security number is 1234 and that would be personal data if it was true.

I’m not a lawyer, but i think i remember something that the gpdr rights cannot be just waived.

Since the user can just delete their own posts, it shouldn’t be a problem, but what do I know.

IonAddis , to startrek in Episode Discussion | Star Trek: Strange New Worlds | 2x03 "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow"
@IonAddis@lemmy.world avatar

I ended up liking this a lot. For one, I’m glad Pelia really is a part of the cast now because I LOVED her introduction and was fearful she’d be a one-and-done character.

But secondly, in the past all I could see with La’an was (as someone else said) “a budget Camina Drummer”. And I love Drummer, but seeing almost!Drummer every time La’an was on screen was so fricking weird.

I think this episode gave La’an some of the development she needed so I wasn’t seeing almost!Drummer all the time.

(And for those who don’t know Drummer is…go watch The Expanse. It’s as if the new (is it still considered new?) Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek had a baby. One part grittier sci-fi universe, one part wonderful character/crew exploration.)

StillPaisleyCat ,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

I agree. At one point, I wondered if the EPs had wanted Cara Gee for the show.

She’s her own person now. Strong and closed like Drummer but from a very different context.

Many of us who are fans of both Trek and The Expanse have wished Trek had some of the complex strong women along the lines of the Expanse. I can’t criticize the EPs for wanting to bring that into the franchise. Now all I want is a Trek version of Avrasala.

Itty53 , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in So how long until the Fediverse is monetized?
@Itty53@kbin.social avatar

Ask yourself these questions..

How long until http protocol is monetized?

How long until POP, IMAP and SMTP (collectively referred to as 'email') is monetized?

How long before torrents are monetized?

The answer is, quite nearly from the start you could .. but anyone can still do everything you could with those protocols by themselves, for free, without any strings. Still people monetized all those things early.

Because those are all just protocol, or a digitized agreement on rules of communicating fixed sets of information. Sets like an email, or a website, or a collection of files. No one owns any of these rules they just exist and any two computers can agree on them and use that to exchange information.

Fediverse is a protocol. Lemmy, kbin, mastodon, and the others are all just programs talking the same protocols. No one allowed any of them to do so, they just agreed to. All the entities that make up the fediverse agreed to the same thing, so all of them can talk to each other, in theory. In practice each one can choose which others it wants to talk to. Just like you can build an email client that just will not send emails to Gmail. It's not because it can't but because it doesn't want to.

    Ah yes, Facebook, where all the users on activity hub are from.

    Wait. That's not correct at all.

    Just because it happened a once or even twice does not mean it can't succeed despite that. Facebook doesn't have some core of active users using there activity hub protocol that they can unplug and snuff out the protocol for. Also every implementation like Lemmy and kbin and even mastodon have custom implementation allowing additional features beyond just what the protocol itself has.

    At this rate mastadon, lemmy and Kbin themselves are more likely to hinder the growth of activity hub as FOSS. They're the ones implementing bunches of features the others have to either keep up with or defederate from. But a hundred walled gardens is still better than the one.

    There's also a lot to say about the mindset of the users. Reddit still exists. Twitter does too. So does Facebook, etc etc etc. The users here chose this over those. These are distinct differences that make the argument of the article a bit weightless. The warning isn't weightless, and people need to be adamant that new users use different instances in order to block all this from being effective. But again, the fact that that article is shared over and over here shows the mindset of the users. We can't stop them from federation. Protocols are protocols. That's the point.

    Chais , to showerthoughts in Blowing air out of your mouth, like blowing out a birthday candle, is just a DC form of talking.
    @Chais@sh.itjust.works avatar

    All talking is DC, unless you also speak while breathing in.

    PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S ,
    @PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@vlemmy.net avatar

    All talking is DC AC, unless you also speak while breathing in.

    Slowly varying signals like the waveforms generated by speech in all its forms are still AC signals and need to be treated as such for engineering purposes.

    Chais ,
    @Chais@sh.itjust.works avatar

    So to bring it back to electric circuits, a range of, say, 0V to +3V would be considered AC?

    PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S ,
    @PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@vlemmy.net avatar

    Yeah. If the signal changed from 0V to +3V, in any way, at any time, then technically it is AC. However, we might treat it as DC for engineering purposes depending on the context. If the system the DC current is going into is stable and responds quickly enough, we can ignore the effect that “starting” the signal will have. However, most non-trivial circuits have non-trivial dynamics, so we need to make sure that, at a bare minimum, they can be started properly.

    Dynamic circuits have, amongst other things, resistances, inductances, and capacitances. Resistors are boring; put in a current I, get back voltage V = IR. Circuits with only resistances are not dynamic. Capacitances and inductances are themselves dynamic elements. For them to exhibit any interesting behavior, the signal (input current or voltage) needs to be changing. Circuits can (but will not necessarily) experience weird behavior when turning on if the power is taken from zero to some voltage too quickly. For example, if a current in an inductor is set from zero to a nonzero constant, you will get a huge (theoretically infinite) spike in voltage. This is because voltage across an inductor is proportional to the rate at which the current signal changes. In the case of a current switched from zero to non-zero, the change from zero to not-zero happens almost instantly, implying a voltage that approaches infinity as the transition becomes steeper. Practically, you get a voltage spike which, when multiplied by current, could generate enough power to blow up whatever you’re working on.

    I didn’t mention this in any of the comments, but real “DC” sources are dirty. Noise is a class of signals that can take on random values at all times. The fact that it can be a different random value at any time implies that noise is a subclass of AC signals. A “pure” source contaminated with noise is colloquially called a “dirty” source.

    Dirty power supplies, the effect of turning the power on and off, and other supply imperfections are why if you look at the power sections of electrical circuit diagrams, you will see capacitors from the supply voltage to ground. The current through a capacitor is directly proportional to the rate of change of the voltage across it. A constant voltage would imply a zero rate of change, so no current is going through the capacitor. Colloquially, it shouldn’t do anything unless there is a disturbance in the circuit.

    Engineers generally expect power supplies to “kinda suck”, even those marked as DC. If there are any other dynamic circuits being powered by the supply (and there almost always are; we want our electronics to actually do things for us!), they will be affected and possibly compromised entirely by a dirty power supply.

    I couldn’t really think of an application where blowing could be treated as a DC signal and talking could be treated as an AC signal. From an electrical engineering position, blowing is a particular subclass of speech signals, for which there is a dearth of literature, all of which hinges on the assumption that speech signals are “AC”, e.g. time-varying.
