I’m here after the reddit news. Was a little confusing at first.

By the way, what are “subreddits” called on lemmy? I can see they start with “c/“ instead of “r/“.

Chewy7324 ,

The Lemmy equivalent to a Reddit subreddit is a community.

micl ,

Thanks!

carl_dungeon , to nostupidquestions in Why do people complain about multiple streaming platforms existing?

Because what people really want is an iTunes like service that just has everything for a single price rather than 14 streaming apps that have content overlap but also exclusives and rotating temporary content licenses costing $20+ each with ads.

There was a period of time when I gave up pirating because Netflix+prime was good enough to watch just about everything, and on-device search easily searched both platforms and provided a unified search/watch experience. It wasn’t worth the effort of finding and storing content yourself.

Fast forward to today, you search for something, it belongs to some fucking random service you don’t currently pay $17.99 a month for and then halfway though a season, it drops from the platform and goes to another streaming service you also don’t pay for. It’s just endless bullshit and nickel&diming now.

I’d happily pay $60 a month for a single service that just had everything and saved me from all this bullshit, instead I’d be forced to spend $300 a month for 23 services I barely use just to have access to the catalog of content I want.

Another example of this done well is steam- I just want my whole library in one place, I don’t want 5 different game libraries each with their own crap. Consequently I’ve spent thousands of dollars on steam over the years because of the unified experience.

TheBest , to piracy in is there anything better to get free british tv other than this website?
@TheBest@midwest.social avatar

There are other streaming sites that you can use if you know specifically what show you want to watch. Not good for finding British TV, but definitely good for streaming it. DM me.

tmpod , to asklemmy in What languages do you speak?
@tmpod@lemmy.pt avatar

I’m a native Portuguese speaker, fluent in English and can understand Spanish and French. Despite having had 3 years of French in school, I can no longer speak properly, and my writing is really bad, but I can understand pretty well. Spanish just comes to me because of the similarities with Portuguese, I never formally learned it.

fluent in Maltese (native) and English. Conversational in Italian. I was one of the last generations to grow up without the internet, so we had to watch TV. And we’re in close proximty to italy so we could get their channels. It is much less common nowadays for kids to also know Italian here. But people my age have no idea what Dragon Ball Z sounds like in english. We all watched it in Italian.

Redkey , to patientgamers in dues ex and disco elysium : and ps plus catalog discussion

It’s not a really big thing, but it is a pet peeve of mine (and some others); the name of the series isn’t “Dues Ex” but “Deus Ex” (day-us ex), as in “deus ex machina” (day-us ex mack-in-a).

“Deus ex machina” literally translates as “God from (the) machine”, and originally referred to a type of stage prop used in ancient plays, then in more modern times the term came to refer more generally to the sort of plot device that used that prop, which is a previously unmentioned person or thing that suddenly appears to save the heroes from an otherwise inescapable threat. At some time in the 60s or 70s it started to become popular to use it in a more literal sense in sci-fi stories about machine intelligence or cyborgs.

tvcvt , to selfhosted in Proxmox: Trouble with permissions of data in a mountpoint for a lxc (audiobookshelf)

I’m making some assumptions, namely that you’re using an unprivileged LXC container and the mount point is a bind mount.

Unprivileged LXC shift user ID numbers so that an escape won’t result in root access to the host. The root user (uid 0) in the container is actually uid 100000 from the perspective of the Proxmox host.

What I usually do is set ownership of my bind mounts to that high-numbered ID (so something like chown -R 100000:100000 /path/to/bind/mount) from Proxmox. Then the root user in the container will be able to set whatever permissions you need directly.

dQw4w9WgXcQ , to asklemmy in What languages do you speak?

Fluent in Norwegian and English. Norwegian allows me to basically fully understand Swedish and Danish, but my mimicking/mocking of those languages does probably not count as languages I can speak.

I also have some very rusty german education which would probably allow me to be understood, but hardly enough to have a conversation.
