dub , to technology in First Reddit API change, and now Twitter is rate limiting. Is this the implosion of corporate social media?

It’s clear that something is going on. At least for Reddit and Twitter, they need to make money. They’ve made that pretty obvious but it is curious why now. Facebook and others didn’t seem to have this issue. YouTube sounds like google just Google

I’m not sure how Lemmy will last if it grows massively. But I’m here for a good time not a long

Laxaria ,

Wikipedia has done well for itself using donation runs and grassroots support, so if there are ways for instances to do similar the decentralized nature of this will work out ok.

Elsewhere the issue is many of these large services have grown to the size of effectively being a public good, but good luck maintaining a public good in a profit generating way as a private company seeking the next quarter’s growth.

dub ,

That’s a good point. Wikipedia isn’t a for-profit company so they don’t have to show insane profit every quarter in order to calm shareholders. I donate to Wikipedia all the time cause I appreciate what they provide.

Mickey , to gaming in Have you ever felt overwhelmed by how to spend your gaming time?

Yeah I feel that with many hobbies too as well as gaming. I feel like there is a culture of, if you’re not doing something productive you’re wasting time. But in reality I think everyone needs a break. You can’t possibly be always productive, that ruins the whole point of relaxing!

It’s not easy to get away from either, but I’ve found that dedicating time to just not being productive and filling it with what you want to do is a good start. I work from home now so separating my day into chunks is even more important than ever because I my work space is also my PC gaming space.

Just try not to feel like you need to get something meaningful out of everything I guess. Sometimes it can just be fun.

Solid, easily get a full day or more based on how much I’m on it.

sparkle , to youshouldknow in YSK: how to painlessly migrate you and us from reddit

I'm still having a bit of trouble using Lemmy. I have Jerboa on my phone but I can't use it right now, it says something about a version lower than v0.18 and trying a different instance and I can't log-in on my phone's browser because the circle just keeps spinning. I'm on my laptop and I feel like if I log this out, I'm gonna have troubles logging in again.

Coelacanth ,
@Coelacanth@lemmy.world avatar

Well, part of it is the lemmy.world instance struggling with all the new user influx. The Jerboa issue will hopefully get fixed later today when lemmy.world updates to version 0.18.1 (fingers crossed it sticks this time).

If you are looking for other options to interface with Lemmy, there is a list of all current (and upcoming) apps here: https://lemmy.world/post/465785

Miqo ,

I was looking for a list like that a minute ago. Thanks!

kaspavicius ,

Had the same problem, I'm using Connect for Lemmy on Android right now, hope it helps. However I'm using Sync for Lemmy once the development ends

onlyanegg ,

Just installed connect. It's nice!

Anders429 ,

I had the same issue. It seems that lemmy.world is not yet upgraded to 0.18, but Jerboa requires it. I was able to fix it by downloaded an older version of Jerboa (specifically, version 0.34 or older).

I later switched to Liftoff, which seems to be a much smoother experience.

eco ,

Lemmy.world just upgraded to 0.18 a couple of hours ago. Still a little sluggish but has improved significantly over the last half hour.

People need to stop recommending lemmy.world when it has so many people already; join lemm.ee, vlemmy.net, or lemmy.one instead.

Or see if there’s an instance for your local community. For example I’m Dutch, so I joined feddit.nl. This makes filtering by Local (as opposed to Subscribed or All) actually usefully to see what’s new on communities on the instance.

Quartix , to android in What phone are you using?

I’m using the OnePlus 9 Pro right now, and I’m really happy with it. I switched from iPhone X to OnePlus in August 2022. I thought iPhones were better for 5 years, and I was wrong. I had iPhone 5, 5s, 6 and 7 before. Usually I upgrade to a new phone every 2 or 3 years. My Nothing Ear(1) and PC on Linux fits into the android ecosystem very well

R4iNO , to books in eReader recommendations?

I’ve been reading pirated books on my Kindle. Kindle for the hardware, library genesis for the books. I buy the books that I enjoyed, After reading them.

Although my book sources are messed up, you can also read your legitimately bought .epub books on a kindle. Your question, “which e-reader”, isn’t the right question I think. The question should be, from where are you buying the books legally.

I wonder if I’m getting banned for advocating piracy… Let me check the rules and stuff…

silent_clash ,

Advocating piracy seems to be okay here as there is a piracy community. Where I need clarity is can I actuality link things other than magnet links?

R4iNO ,

Why do that and tease the big monsters? Keep a low profile.

Bozicus , to reddit in PSA: Let’s fill Kbin/Lemmy with content to attract and KEEP new users

I’m having trouble getting my head around the idea that people here actually want me to post and comment here. A lot of places online, I feel like my comments or posts are too long, or no one cares, or the space is just so saturated with content that I have nothing of value to add.

Probably that’s at least partly my own insecurities, of course, but it’s still mind-boggling to be told that not only can I contribute as much as I like, people want me to do it. And I’m a little scared that I will still manage to annoy people, lol, I have just been yelling at myself for so long.

fieldhockey44 OP ,

You’re not the only one! That’s partly why I made that post- on Reddit I would make 1-2 posts a year and only got real traction with 1 or 2 ever. I was always too late for my comments to matter and I usually just browsed and voted.

Here, the community is smaller so each post and comment matters more, and for the most part I’ve found it a lot more welcoming. I realized that engaging more proactively was a lot more fun than on Reddit, and I thought that others would probably be thinking the same way so maybe this post would help break down that passive habit so many of us have from Reddit.

Bozicus ,

It’s nice to know I’m not the only one. <3 And yes, this post is helping. Every time I scroll by, it seems a little less weird. I’ve been trying to think back to the time ~20 years ago when I felt more confident and engaged. There were spaces where I actually was trying to keep the ball rolling, and I think the same principles will apply. But trying to put myself back in that headspace is not easy, and there are some parts of that time in my life that Idon’t want to recreate, lol. But I think it’s worth making the effort, if only to see how it goes.

captainlezbian , to nostupidquestions in What was so special about the Apollo app?

It just worked. You could swipe to vote and to comment. You had the ability to read messages mid thread. It looked good. It was also the spiritual successor of alienblue, an app that was well loved and bought out by Reddit to make their official app which retained very few similarities.

And beyond all that the dev worked hard, communicated with users, and was extremely up front about how Reddit screwed him over with the API change. He’s the one that Huffman accused of threatening Reddit. The other app devs didn’t record their interactions with Reddit.
