Spending an hour on Reddit or Twitter means downloading a few megabytes of content.
Spending an hour on YouTube means downloading a few gigabytes of content. The cost to serve that is massive.
YouTube lost money when Google bought them. It continued to lose money for years. It was only after YouTube finally got large enough and their ad targeting got good enough that they started to turn a profit on YouTube.
I’m really skeptical that anything other than a big tech company could provide a similar platform like that for free.
Sure, it could work if you could get people to pay $10/month, like YouTube Premium, but people wouldn’t do that without there being enough content to make it worthwhile. It’s a chicken-and-egg problem. The only way to get past that point is with a massive amount of initial investment.
I have been using / testing 6 of them Liftoff, Connect, Thunder, Jerboa, Wefwef, Summit. All have strong points... But with it's recent update I will give the edge to Liftoff. Accent theming added... And the Amoled (my favorite) theme is beautiful
Oh yeah, I was using Sync for Reddit exclusively and it was a kinda sad moment when I uninstalled it today… It’s so great to see so much development and choice with lemmy apps tho, and a lot of collaboration
There are a lot of options for Lemmy, but beware they still need to mature a bit. The two apps I keep using the most are Thunder and Connect for Lemmy. Lots of users swear by Liftoff but I find the aesthetics a bit lacking for me. There’s also Lemming which is the most barebones but has a great UI for something that has only had a couple of alpha releases. Most if not all of these are available to download from Github.
Connect is working really well for me, but I prefer jerboa. Unfortunately that isn't working right now with lemmy. World being on an older version. Once they go to 18.1, I should be able to use it again.
All the apps I have tried so far have been great. Liftfof however is on a class of it’s own. A unique feature it has is the ability to combined feet from different accounts on different instances.
Antennapod is a Free Open Source Software (FOSS) podcast app. The app is well designed with great features. You can also use it for playing audio books locally as well.
I quite like it, my only complaint is that the Android auto support is not great. It seems to lose track of what podcast I’m playing s lot of the time. The customization and queueing features are great though.
Yes that definitely used to be an issue. But I haven’t quite experienced/noticed that lately (maybe since they revamped the new home tab?)… If it’s been a while, maybe give it another shot.
You have to find a phone that is compatible with open source Linux Phone OS. Most of the OS websites give a listing of what phone make/model works. FYI, almost all the Google Pixel phones work.
Here are a few I am keeping an eye on when my Pixel 4a/5G stops getting updates from Google…this year. /
LineageOS/ GrapheneOS/ CalyxOS/ e.foundation/
Youtube videos and other websites are good sources on how to install, etc.
Yes, they are Android derivities, but Android is basically Linux…runs off a linux kernel. If you want a pure linux system, I think there is a KDE platform for phones and Ubuntu (I think) but you can’t run regular Android Apps, do banking, etc. You are more open source, but limited in certain areas.
That’s odd… You’re clearly logged in or you wouldn’t be able to post. I guess it’s possible connect is losing your subscriptions? Is the app showing your account subscribed to a bunch of communities inside connect?
Yes. On the other apps i can choose to list posts in subscribed, local, or all. On connect i have buttons for frontpage, local, and all. I guess maybe front-page has my subscribed communities?
Like me! My very first cellphone was a Sony Ericcson. It was a GSM bar phone, in 2004. Got it free with the AT&T employee plan. It saved me once. I was in a car wreck on the freeway and my gf was using AOL (ha) on the only phone line at my house so I used my tiny Sony Ericsson to contact a co worker friend on msn messenger (this is seriously making me sound old) and told her to IM my gf to get off the computer/phone so I could call about my car accident and get help. It wasn’t a smartphone, either, but it did the trick there.
Then I got one of those Sony Walkman phones a year later, it was excellent for music.
I think this is a good opportunity for people to explore joining alternative instances rather than just the largest. Lemmy.world is getting hammered today but other instances are chugging along just fine.
I mean if you’re on an alternate instance the idea is that you’ll still see content from other instances since they all share. Some decide to “defederate” which means they don’t want to share and disable it. But so yeah you will see content from world still if you’re on an alt instance but you should be seeing more than just that.
I think it might just have been the app I was using earlier. It was like two totally different feeds between Connect and Liftoff when filtering for the same thing. Connect shows me everything everywhere all at once. Liftoff was only showing instances I had added accounts for, despite it having a “show me everything” special filter. 🤷🏻♂️
Apparently lemmy.world will be going down for an attempted server upgrade at 1900 BST, any posts after this time may be lost if @ruud has to roll the update back. If successful, we should see an improvement in performance. 🤞
Edit: back up and seems to be running ok, should settle down soon
