Fun fact, 165F is often parroted for cooking chicken, but I urge everyone to go lower. 155-160F results in much juicier chicken. 165F corresponds to instantaneously killing all bacteria. 155F is about 60s, and 160F is 15s.

dsilverz , (edited ) to asklemmy in How do you say "[you have the] wrong number" in your language?
@dsilverz@thelemmy.club avatar

In Brazil, there are regional variations and word/phrasing variations as well.

Formally:

  • “Você ligou para o número errado” (you called the wrong number)
  • “Você discou o número errado” (you dialed for the wrong number )
  • “Você está ligando para o número errado” (we call it the “gerúndio”, something like “-ing”, as in “You’re calling the wrong number”)

Informally/casually:

  • “Discou errado, irmão” / “Discou errado, mano” / “Discou errado, cara” / “Discou errado, mermão” (“dialed wrongly, bro”, with “bro” variations across Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro (the latter being the latter variation))
  • “Tu ligasse errado, visse” (some Brazilian northeast states, something like “Thou calledsth wrongly, see?”)
  • “Né aqui não, moço” (Minas Gerais, something like “It’s not here, boy”)

There are lots of other variations and I’m not really aware of all of them.

Also, the way I answer depends a lot on multiple factors such as: my emotional state (wrath? Sad? Okay? Excitedly happy (rarely)?), my current pace (rushing? Chilling?), among others. Generally, “Não é aqui não” (the Minas Gerais variation without the ending “moço” and a fully spelled “Não é” instead of “Né”, because I’m originally from interior of São Paulo state but highly culturally influenced by a part of the family from Minas Gerais).

@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

This might just be because California made it law, but Walmart’s only dress code was that you had to wear jeans and their supplied vest. They couldn’t tell you how to have your hair, that you couldn’t have visible tats or piercings, etc.

Head shops probably don’t care much, too. Just make sure you’re actually on drugs if they drug test you.

I truly mean no disrespect; no one can be good at everything. But if this is the vocabulary you use to describe the object and the problem, it’s probably best to call a pro.

EABOD25 , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in What jobs in the US (Kentucky) Allow employees to wear whatever you want?

Not necessarily whatever you want because you have to follow DOT standards, but utility locating is a good one. The standard is steel toe, reflective vest, and in some cases, a hard hat. Other than that, you’re good unless the company mandates something different. You can also get good money, experience, and networking in that field. Since you’re such a young person, and if you have a good personal drive, you’d greatly excel at it because it is a relatively physical job

over_clox , to showerthoughts in "Shut Down" is redundant.

That depends on the direction of the opening. Shut up means basically the same thing as shut down, but the hinged part operates in the opposite direction.

degen ,

Yeah, just shut works for either. It’s less so redundancy and more specificity.

If you think about it, there’s only meaning with a frame of reference. Shutting up or shutting down could be nonsensical in the Void, as many things would be, I imagine.

over_clox ,

Shut the door, or close the window. Which came first, Doors or Windows?.. 🤔

Have you considered using inheritance?

OttoVonNoob OP ,

I’m an amateur I’m not sure what inheritance is:X? Is it like instantiateing?

wesker , (edited )
@wesker@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

When you start learning about different paradigms, you’ll likely learn much more about inheritance when learning about the Object Oriented design paradigm.

To overly simplify, you create objects that inherit attributes from other objects. It’s for instance a way to create reusable patterns, that have stronger and more reliable data structures.

I made the joke comment, because for instance, you could create a Turtle class, and always know it was a Turtle. Again, an oversimplification.

EDIT: I should also add that for some reason OOP is an oddly divisive subject. Developers always seem to want to argue about it.

OttoVonNoob OP ,

Oh yea, class resources. That would work! Thanks.im going to have to into this more, as it’s going to be useful

wesker , (edited )
@wesker@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

If I could give a suggestion I wish I had gotten much earlier on in my education and career, it would be to really spend some time learning about the different paradigms, and their best use cases. You will likely ensure yourself a strong foundation in software architecture.

Telling a laptop to shut down is very different from telling it to shut up or just shut. Shutting a laptop doesn’t shut it down (at least, not by default).

Shutting it does shut you out though, at least until you unshut it.

EABOD25 , (edited ) to explainlikeimfive in ELI5 How come it seems now the old wise tale of Vietnamese eating pets and now its immigrants into the USA?

I can’t necessarily speak on the history of Vietnam accurately except I know around that time there were certain parts of Vietnam that were under famine. I cannot accurately speak on the truth of that however. The pet eating scare in the US right now however is a radical scare tactic. There’s been an uptick in pet ownership in the US and a downtime in child birth meaning people are putting more stock in their pets than putting stock in having children. So with that being said, how do you scare people into your corner, you tell them their stock is threatened? That’s right. The Trump brigade is using lies as a scare tactic
