One time I commented that my favorite game was WoW, down voted -15 for no apparent reason.

I wouldn’t use that as evidence that you were bot-attacked. A lot of people don’t like WoW and are mad at it for disappointing them. coughSHADOWLANDScough

maniacalmanicmania , to linux in Gentoo vs any other distro
@maniacalmanicmania@aussie.zone avatar

You can get Gentoo up and running pretty quickly by following the handbook. From memory it’s easy to miss one or two clear instructions because the styling of the handbook can add more eye-catching weight to the explanation than the actual commands. So be sure to re-read areas where things don’t seem to working out.

Gentoo also has a binary repo if you don’t plan to stray from whatever installation profile defaults you start off with.

I can’t confirm a simple server install of Gentoo is somehow more lean than any other distribution.

I’ve used gentoo-install with success previously although I don’t know how up to date it is.

to be fair, it’s more of a gimmick when using it in your home. I have a notebook that i use to test out new distros on and i can hook it up to my LAN and quickly install something without whipping out the USB stick.

Also the mini gaming pc hooked to my TV is a victim of being reinstalled every couple months after i tinker around too much.

ampersandrew , (edited ) to games in Is Elder Scrolls 6 doomed to fail? I can't see how it will work
@ampersandrew@lemmy.world avatar

Even if they spend $300M making it, they’ll likely still make their money back, even in a world where Game Pass exists. I think their tech stack is so ancient that it ought to be thrown straight in the garbage, and they’ll get more mileage out of an Elder Scrolls game that’s forked from what Obsidian built in Unreal for Avowed. It also sure sounds like, much like studios like Arkane, Rocksteady, and BioWare, they were so high on their previous successes that they couldn’t admit to themselves that any decision they made was a bad one. If they can learn from their mistakes and take the L on Starfield (an L that would be considered a W for most other developers), then Elder Scrolls can potentially meet fans’ expectations. If they keep making games the way they’ve always made them without trying to adapt to the times, they’ll follow the same path as Fallout 4 and Starfield.

MehBlah , to technology in Bots are running rampant. How do we stop them from ruining Lemmy?

You were targeted by someone and they used the bots to punish you. It could have been a keyword in your posts. I had some tool that would down vote any post where I used the word snowflake. I guess the little snowflake didn’t like me calling him one. I played around with bots for a while but it wasn’t worth it. I was a OP on several IRC networks back in the day and the bots we ran then actually did something useful. Like a small percentage of reddit bots.

How do we get “normies” to adopt the Fediverse?

We don’t. Normies take one look at anything that isn’t mainstream and pinch their noses. A significant portion of them can barely make a search on the internet, they get lost at the idea of “websites” and are likely heavily biased against people who aren’t using what “everyone is using”

Anedoctal experience: back when I was using dating apps, I’ve had a fair share of girls that stopped talking to me once I said I didn’t have instagram, because it meant I was “hiding something”.

MajorHavoc ,

stopped talking to me once I said I didn’t have instagram, because it meant I was “hiding something”.

That’s awful.

Also, I guess they would think I’m hiding so much, considering the number of bloated awful services I’ve rejected.

mke ,

That may be true for some people, but isn’t a valid generalization. See the Brazil blocking Twitter situation.

Millions decided to give Bluesky a chance and a graph showed daily user activity quadrupling. Now, a not-insignificant portion are saying they refuse to return to Twitter because:

  • It feels less toxic and healthier
  • They have more control over their experience
  • They’re finally having fun with social media again

Sound familiar?

And I’m pretty sure Misskey has more features. Hell, Mastodon as well probably. Bluesky doesn’t even support video yet.

The first sin of the Fediverse isn’t being small, that’s the second. First is being a pain in the ass.

beerclue , to selfhosted in Whats on your USB stick? Looking for recommendations for handy tools

I’m an arch user, and also have a small proxmox based homelab. I always have a live Ubuntu around, the latest desktop version available. Good for troubleshooting. Also, latest proxmox, opnsense, pfsense, debian.

Additionally, I have a small USB drive on my keychain with both USB C and USB A, where I keep some encrypted backups of important stuff, and I can access that from both my laptop and my phone.

intensely_human , to asklemmy in How do I stop a 'planned future' from blindly determining my life's path?

Shift your goal to something more realistic based on your new knowledge of the world. This will happen multiple times throughout life; it’s part of the process.

Jordan Peterson covers this extensively in his course Maps of Meaning. You can watch or listen to the course on youtube by searching maps of meaning 2017 full course

I know he’s controversial, but mostly based on lies people tell about him. Sometimes to be happy you gotta see past the bullshit and go check something out for yourself.

cron OP ,

True, only through heroic. It has been among the most wished features of GOG, yet never fulfilled.

General_Effort , to fediverse in How do we get "normies" to adopt the Fediverse?

Defeatist opinion.

The commercial alternatives hope to make money with every additional user. They use AB testing and statistics to streamline the on-boarding and to increase engagement. The result may not be in the user’s interest (doom-scrolling, ragebait, …) but it works.

For a fediverse instance, any additional user is a cost, not the promise of money. Financially, you wouldn’t want that. Those who fund instances are giving a gift to the world for their own reasons. You can accept the gift or not. Those who keep instances running with donations will usually want to sustain the community of which they are part. They probably don’t want it to change very much.

So, I don’t think matters will change. Partly because the psychological engineering is antithetical to the fediverse ethos (as I see it, in my humble opinion). But mostly because the outcome we see is an inherent result of the incentive structure.
