djsoren19 , to games in Is Elder Scrolls 6 doomed to fail? I can't see how it will work

I’d say the bigger problem is just that the Bethesda RPG model is completely outdated. It feels like something you’d play a decade ago, but what used to be it’s contemporaries have absolutely eclipsed it by this point. If I wanted to play just a fun easy fantasy romp, I’d go for Dragon’s Dogma 2. If I wanted an actual RPG with bones that could offer me a challenge, I’d play Elden Ring. If I’m just looking for a well-written story, I’d go play something by CD Project Red.

Bethesda’s games aren’t well written, aren’t that interesting to play, and basically cannot offer any real challenge. The only real saving grace for Skyrim has been the modding community, which has been able to continually breathe life into what would otherwise be very tired game design.

For me, the launchers are sometimes the only thing that worked while trying Linux the other day.

cron OP ,

If you need help, feel free to ask here on lemmy. At least my home instance has more linux users than windows users, and there are many who are happy to help.

I think it’s DOA without an upgraded game engine. I started playing Starfield right after coming off Cyberpunk with RT enabled and immediately requested a refund from Steam, it just looked like absolute shit in comparison.

conciselyverbose , to technology in Bots are running rampant. How do we stop them from ruining Lemmy?

The problem with almost any solution is that it just pushes it to custom instances that don’t place the restrictions, which pushes big instances to be more insular and resist small instances, undermining most of the purpose of the federation.

If I don’t get irritated skin after shaving should I still use an aftershave?

I would say it’s vital especially for anyone who shaves regularly. But using aftershave with alcohol is almost worse than not using anything

Depends on the distribution. And how used you are to windows.

Imo, for the easiest possible experience, choose fedora and use it sorta like desktop android.

nyan , to linux in Gentoo vs any other distro

There’s an old joke from a couple of decades ago about what operating systems would be like if they were airlines:

Linux Airlines

Disgruntled employees of all the other OS airlines decide to start their own airline. They build the planes, ticket counters, and pave the runways themselves. They charge a small fee to cover the cost of printing the ticket, but you can also download and print the ticket yourself. When you board the plane, you are given a seat, four bolts, a wrench and a copy of the seat-HOWTO.html. Once settled, the fully adjustable seat is very comfortable, the plane leaves and arrives on time without a single problem, the in-flight meal is wonderful. You try to tell customers of the other airlines about the great trip, but all they can say is, “You had to do what with the seat?”

Gentoo is still very much a “You had to do what with the seat?” distro, while most others have retired that concept to varying degrees, at the cost of the seats being less easy to perform unusual adjustments on.

explodicle , to technology in Bots are running rampant. How do we stop them from ruining Lemmy?

Not a full solution, but… can you block users by wildcard? IMHO everyone who has “.eth" or ".btc” as their user name is not worth listening to. Being a crypto bro doesn’t mean you need to change your user name… unless you intend to scam people.

I’ll revise my opinion if rappers ever make crypto names cool.

Buttflapper OP ,

can you block users by wildcard?

Nope. You also can’t prevent users from viewing your profile. It’s not like Facebook where you block someone, they’re gone and can’t even see you. On Reddit, they can see you, and just log onto another account to harass and downvote you.

To me, Endless OS seems to be the best fit for you; install it once and you never ever have to give it a second glance for troubleshooting or whatsoever. It achieves this through using a read-only root file system managed by OSTree with apps installed using Flatpak.. This translates to:

  • The most important system-related files being protected from change by yourself and others.
  • Ensurance that your base installation is exactly the same as the one tested and used by its developers. And thus an (in-)direct quality control and maintenance by the very people that work on it.
  • As the base system is not changing beyond what is provided by the devs, installation of applications is relegated to flatpaks (see Flathub for the App Store).
    • Flatpak is a packaging format that doesn’t interact with the base system to install software; think of it like how applications are installed on your phone. With this, you can still install software you need without compromising changes to the base system.

Tbh I love FO4. It’s not the best in the series, but I’ve played it through a couple times and wouldn’t mind playing it again soon. Hardly anything I’d call a colossal failure. FO76 was a hot mess at launch, but it had its hooks. I got that at launch and ended up playing more of it than I expected considering. No clue about Starfield, but if FO4 and 76 didn’t bug me as much as it did everyone else, I might get on with it decently… assuming they put it on PS5 at some point.

I think Elder Scrolls VI will do well no matter what condition it’s in, though I also doubt it will be a smooth launch.

EnderMB , to linux in Is Linux As Good As We Think It Is?

IMO more people should be critical of the systems and tools that they use instead of shitting on the tools that others choose to use.

We do assume too much of our tools, but many people here are guilty of assuming that other OS’s are broken in ways that do not reflect the average customer experience.
