I’m using Quik SMS which is a continuation of QK SMS. I’ve found that the current state of SMS apps on Android kinda… Sucks. Fossify messenger is probs my second favorite

It was a toss-up at the time but I’d argue FF7 has aged much more gracefully. Sure, you’ve still got the Lego figures and messy navigation on pre-rendered backdrops, but the battles still feel snappy and dynamic even with the low framerate. It isn’t a slog like FF8 and especially FF9 turned out to be when they started pushing the hardware.

Ocarina, meanwhile, has full-on 3D camera jank.

Yep, all my games just work, to be honest it takes me less time to setup my gaming rig on Linux than windows, and it feels solid as hell. If I have a Linux PC I can get steam in a few seconds and start playing just like that!

BaumGeist , to linux in Switching back to Linux. For good.

I have a tinkering laptop set up with Fedora, DNF is as simple as APT and friendlier imo. I’ve switched to Nala (an APT wrapper that enables concurrent downloads) on my Debian PCs. YMMV.

Simply put: every distro needs its own package manager because the distros handle packages differently, from the way software is bundled and distributed, to where files reside in the filesystem.

E.g. APT is so friendly because of how rigid Debian is about the structure and info that is bundled within the .deb archive, which Pacman users tend to consider as unnecessarily restrictive bloat that impairs download/installation times. Meanwhile, yay (and other AUR helper programs) compiles the packages from source.

Although there are some that work across distros, like Nix or Homebrew. Plus there’s always flatpak or AppImages or (shudder) Snaps.

And of course, if you want people to think you’re basically a programmer, there’s always

<span style="color:#323232;">$ git clone <git repository>
</span><span style="color:#323232;">$ cd <git repository>
</span><span style="color:#323232;">$ sudo make install
</span>

(for software that is packaged with a Makefile)

Mezo SMS, comes with a beautiful keyword filter. “to unsubscribe” gets rid of 99% of the spam out there.

bassomitron ,

Feels like that keyword phrase would fuck up a lot of legitimate automated messages I actually do want (e.g. pharmacy refills, food delivery, appointment reminders, etc). Regardless, a custom keyword filter would be excellent.

If this isn’t the right community to post this, please let me know, and I’ll take it down. I don’t want to cause any trouble, I’m just looking for help. I’m really new to this kinda stuff.

socphoenix ,

I think this is a fine community, but as a question, is there a reason you aren’t considering building a server? You could fit those requirements into a normal desktop chassis and likely still have some pci slots free for future upgrades.

BearOfaTime ,

Yep, spec a case to meet the drive needs, then find the motherboard that meets the performance needs.

catloaf ,

I’d pick a CPU before the motherboard.

SethranKada OP ,
@SethranKada@lemmy.ca avatar

Mostly, I just don’t know much about hardware in general. I’m sure I could follow a tutorial online on how to put it together, but I don’t know much about what I’d need to buy in the first place.

I’ll look online and see what I can find though, this does seem like what I’m going to have to do to get the specs I want.

socphoenix ,

You can look at things like

www.newegg.com/tools/custom-pc-builder

To see some ideas of what would work, and I hope you feel free to ask around as you look at things! We all had to learn somehow and once you know what you’re looking for it’s just a small puzzle.

Quick suggestion is to decide on the cpu (I’m partial to amd so I’d pick something ryzen based if you want processing power) first then compatible motherboard, as after those two you should be able to just look at spec sheets and see things like the kind of ram you need case type etc.
