Kushan , to linuxmemes in Why Are You Staying On Windows 11?
@Kushan@lemmy.world avatar

Because the time to learn a new operating system is more than I have to spare. I’m approaching middle aged, windows is familiar and I just want to kick back and enjoy my games.

Linux hasn’t reached drop-in replacement on the desktop yet. The steam deck is fantastic and I have no problems running it stock, but desktop Linux? Nah. Why would I dual boot when I can stick to one OS that does what I want and need.

(Side note: I run Linux on my server and am quite happy with it).

finestnothing , to asklemmy in Are your grandparents and parents nice or tolerant people?

My maternal grandmother - extremely nice and sweet, died of breast cancer when I was a kid so I don’t remember much else about her.

My maternal grandfather - convicted for soliciting an underage prostitute (undercover cop), that’s all I know about him and it’s enough. Not sure if he’s even alive.

Paternal grandparents - psychotic religious fanatics (burned our Harry Potter and Mickey the sorcerer books while babysitting when I was a baby, killed multiple of my dad’s pets growing up, etc). Have only seen that grandmother when the grandfather died and at a Christmas party a month later - still psychotic and super rude.

My parents - nicest people you’ll ever meet, I have basically no bad memories from being raised (except my dad only makes broccoli and cauliflower by microwaving it)

Presi300 , to selfhosted in How do I determine if a CPU is better than another one?
@Presi300@lemmy.world avatar

For desktop CPUs… Higher number = better. That’s it. i5 > i3 > pentium, 11xxxx > 10xxxx > 9xxx… etc. For laptop CPUs… Good luck

GenderNeutralBro ,

It’s worth mentioning that with a large generational gap, the newer low-end CPU will often outperform the older high-end. An i3-1115G4 (11th gen) should outperform an i7-4790 (4th gen), at least in single-core performance. And it’ll do it while using a lot less power.

I use WebScrapBook on LibreWolf. It let you choose between saving to single html, maff and htz. I prefer the htz format where resources are stored next to the page in an archive. It can also be viewed natively by Firefox-based browsers using the URI scheme jar:file:///home/me/somepage.htz!/index.html.

lordnikon , to nostupidquestions in is it possible to be married and still feel lonely?

Marriage is not a fix for anything it’s just a definition we give for two people that want to hold hands endure life together and I use endure on purpose. Since it’s the good and the bad that comes with it. To many people especially men raised on 1950’s fantasy think marriage is about getting something but really it’s about giving something sometimes everything for your family. So they get mad when both people in the marriage have to work but for some reason they think just because house work was gender coded to be women’s work they expect their wives to do that on top of everything else.

Marriage is no longer man and wife it two partners coming together to face the harsh reality that is our world. That means doing your fair share not being asked to do the damn dishes. Trading back and forth who is going to be the rock and who is going to be the one holding on to the rock. So they don’t get pulled under.

long story short your coworker is a dumbass that just wants things handed to him. Just because he checked a box that said I’m married now. where is my happiness.

Also I have been married for a long time and I will tell you. you go through phases. You will fall in love with your partner then after time you may fall out of love for a bit and then after some more time fall back in love again. But the whole time they are your partner, your family you just can’t imagine them not being their. That’s marriage.

Just a joke. It’s just a way to set up the joke. It doesn’t make sense, practically, but it isn’t supposed to be part of the funny bit. Or it is… It could be, in an ironic way.

🤷‍♂️ Take it with a pinch of salt.

Either dig up an old iPod (flash-modding would be a good idea, as 300+GB iPods are rarer) and put Rockbox on it for FLAC support, or dig up an old phone or something and get a decent USB-C adapter/DAC.

Aceticon , to linux_gaming in Just Switch Over

I’ve switched for over a month now and did had problems with 2 games out of the 6 I tried so far (all of which were both games installed via Lutris and I found solutions to fix them both).

Funnily enough one of the games I got via Steam which did not work before in Windows now works in Linux. Further, I was running Windows 7 (yeah, I know it was a bad idea security wise), so there are AAA games whose minimum Windows version is 10 which I now can play in Linux that I couldn’t before in the Windows I was using.

All in all it has been great and I have no intention whatsoever to go back to Windows.

Even if there are games that won’t work in Linux, there are so many good games out there that can entertain me for hundreds of hours that I won’t miss the handful I cannot get to run in Linux.

hperrin ,

I have a couple games that were Windows 98 and Windows XP games that don’t work on Windows 10/11, but work just fine on Linux. It’s funny that Linux is sometimes better at running Windows games than Windows is.

Aceticon ,

Wine and Proton manage to be better at both forward and backward compatibility with Windows than actual Windows.

Presi300 , to linux in Is there a program that I can run on my laptop to tell me what Linux distro supports the hardware out of the box? Also whether the hardware is supported at all?
@Presi300@lemmy.world avatar

Linux has live ISOs. Flash one on a USB stick, boot off of it and mess around. Generally, these days, everything except the fingerprint sensor/facial recognition thing and sometimes wifi adapter will work out of the box.

palordrolap , to linux in How do you switch whats controlled by media keys?

Check system settings for a keyboard entry / applet. I'm on LMDE Cinnamon and have no idea what the equivalents are on Kubuntu, but over here it's definitely possible to change/remove the default keyboard assignments and set up custom ones instead.

For example, I have Shift+WWW (the multimedia key that starts a web browser by default) set to start the browser with an alternate profile. I could just as easily set plain old WWW to, say, start a terminal instead, or run that custom command.

The hardest part is knowing what custom command to run to get the desired effect.
