I bought a topo map a few weeks ago for a backpacking trip. Electronics are heavier and less suitable for that purpose in my opinion.

Sometimes the first, then eventually the second when you realize you did it but forgot you did it.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminum_can

The inside of the can is lined by spray coating an epoxy lacquer or polymer to protect the aluminum from being corroded by acidic contents such as carbonated beverages and imparting a metallic taste to the beverage

Guess it depends on your definition of “plastic” and if someone would colloquially refer to an epoxy lining as plastic. Not here to debate word meanings but there is definitely a liner inside aluminum cans.

The spouse does most of the shopping but I was in a Harps the other day and saw that a medium (shrinkflated) bag of Cheetos was $8.75 USD.

Harps isn’t super local but… Holy shit. Who can afford Cheetos at that price? I used to buy them as an occasional treat but fuck that noise.

EDIT: for fun I just searched Walmart and they’re $5.94 there. I’m still not spending that much for a garbage treat.

Did you see trump was convicted on all counts in the NY false documents trial?

I was surprised too…

I’ve never heard fs-tab in my life. Always f-stab. Hmmm…

gun-zip just rolls off the tongue better. Two syllables instead of three? Yes, please.

clif ,

I’ll join this.

I commented on a motorcycle thread a few days ago where the poster said “bike from 1982, over forty years old” (or something to that effect) where I had to do the math and realize… Shit… That was forty years ago.

I’d been looking for the nudge to cancel and the last round of ads did it for me.

You might be amazed at the stupid tasks that I, a salaried developer, have been given.

Vas team high five.

I just don’t like kids and the spouse has a genetic disease so it’d be 50/50 if the kids had it.

clif ,

I mean… Expiration dates are mostly a lie anyway. Just do the sniff test, probably fine.

But, on topic, I do appreciate the post since that’s weird.

I’m not arguing with you, just wanted to add my own little info in the most applicable place (and to complain about touch screens :)

My 2017 Honda Civic doesn’t have a touch screen but I did specifically have to get the “lower end” LX model. All the EX models I looked at were touch control.

Paying less money to ensure I don’t get garbage I hate? Don’t threaten me with a good time.

EDIT: I enjoy how I managed to accidentally format the “not arguing” bit in huge font so I’m screaming at you for some reason… Sorry

Praise the lord… for… panda butts?

Currently migrating a massive monolithic Java application to microservices… The circle of life continues.

Want to just swap jobs in ~5 years to keep the cycle going? You can migrate this project back to a Java monolith and I’ll migrate your monolith back to micros :D

A hot meal? If you’re eating the person who just suicided then you could probably stretch those left overs out for at least a week or two.

You might be on to something here…

What is a gender neutral replacement for man, guys, buddy, etc?

So I’ve realized that in conversations I’ll use traditional terms for men as general terms for all genders, both singularly and for groups. I always mean it well, but I’ve been thinking that it’s not as inclusive to women/trans people....

Do you work with me? I’m in the US south and my EU colleagues love “y’all” and have started using it (ironically or not :) pretty often.

Warms my heart.

Don’t let your dreams be dreams. I believe in you.

Same. I was so (oddly) proud of my streak. Then my spouse brought it home from a meeting with friends : P

… I was impressed. What I really want to know is how many people opened it anyway.

The sites shouldn’t have to maintain that but browsers should?

Also, some browsers are open source.

There’s so many problems with this idea that I don’t know where to start. But, I do see where you’re coming from.

It’s pretty easy to get registered to perform weddings in TN… And many other states.

Universal life Church is well known online ordination “place” that has been accepted with zero scrutiny in two other states by me and in TN by a friend.

I’ll just leave this info here, do with it what you will.

Next “logical” step: periods are murder and shall be punished by Alabama as such.

Do you often hear the ringing of switching power supplies and devices when you are in a quiet space?

I’m curious, how many people are aware of these sounds. I have designed, etched, and built my own switching power supplies along with winding my own transformers. I am aware of the source of the noise. So, does anyone else hear these high frequency sounds regularly?

Next you’ll start seeing your nose

I’ve noticed over the last few years that you can always find new releases but “old” material is increasingly unavailable. .

Want the new super hero movie that released last week? Easy.

Want 1984’s “The Last Starfighter”? Good luck…

I’ve been on mint for ages but when I updated my RAID this year it originally wouldn’t recognize it. I eventually got it recognized but it capped the 16TB drives at 999GB for some reason. For fun, I went up the chain to Ubuntu… Same thing

In frustration I went to Grandma’s house with Debian and it worked perfect out of the box. I’d spent hours researching it but the best I found was a potential RAID related bug (lvm, specifically, I think) introduced in Ubuntu that, of course, filtered into Mint. Even fdisk reported the physical drives as 999GB in Mint/Ubuntu.

I still don’t know the exact cause but I got it up and running so I’m a Debian guy now, I guess.

Granted, my use case isn’t super normal since I’m using a BIOS RAID1 (and we all know how fun BIOS RAID can be) with full disk encryption.

Worked out in the end but it made me sad to ditch Mint

clif ,

Yep, that’s why I made sure to include that “we all know how fun BIOS RAID is” bit.

It was fine with the previous 2TB RAID1, but that doesn’t mean anything.

I kind of forgot about them. Time to revisit and relisten.

Thanks for the reminder

Music Piracy Is Back, Baby (gizmodo.com)

“Muso, a research firm that studies piracy, concluded that the high prices of streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music are pushing people back towards illegal downloads. Spotify raised its prices by one dollar last year to $10.99 a month, the same price as Apple Music. Instead of coughing up $132 a year, more consumers...

clif ,

I dropped prime after the announcement… Who’s next?

clif ,

Can confirm. We (in US) have chickens and whenever we gift eggs to people they’re astounded that they don’t need to be refrigerated but also sometimes horrified that they aren’t washed.

Granted, I keep the eggs that get poopy for myself so they don’t get tossed out by an overly cautious person. I just rinse them immediately before use if they’re very dirty. Occasionally one of the hens will have an “accident” and lay an egg in the dirt outside or on the coop floor. Otherwise they look generally like the pic above.

I’ve yet to have a rotten egg and at times we’ve gotten behind by over a month… Still good, sitting on the counter for a month.

Fun info, I’m currently eating through some “water glassed” eggs that I stored in May of 2023. Still good.

clif ,

Yeah, at ~8 months these are about 50/50 on whether the yolks hold together. Still taste fine though.

I decided to give it a try since in the spring/summer they were laying way more than we could keep up with … But mostly because I thought it was interesting and wanted to try it :D

clif ,

You’ll hear no arguments from me : D

More like curious psychopath, maybe

clif ,

You’re missing out. Donkey eggs are very high in vitamin A and D.

clif ,

This has been commonplace for decades. The government agencies went big into it after 9/11. Funny thing was that I found out about it from a competing company telling me about how the company I worked for at the time was doing it.

I should note that I’m firmly against it, just that it’s not new.

It’s illegal to spy on your own citizens in the US, but completely okay if someone else does the spying and you buy the data.

I’m on mobile with short time so I’ll search it later, but what’s the origin/symbology of a burning cross? I know the kkk did it, but it seems a bit weird since they leaned towards christian and it’s effectively destroying a symbol of their religion.

Typically when we think of burning things it’s because the group doing the burning is against the symbol being burned… Flags, books, etc.

I somehow never thought of this angle before
