tinwhiskers , to linux in Do you use an antivirus? Why, or why not?
@tinwhiskers@kbin.social avatar

No. I only use Android as my PC via AR glasses. Is there even any antivirus software for Android? Probably, but I don't care I guess. Never had a problem.

bagfatnick , to fediverse in Are there any /r/netsec or cybersecurity focused groups on the Fediverse?

Have a look at the communities in the instance infosec.pub.

Blaze ,

Indeed, they also have a Mastodon infosec.exchange

nieceandtows , to nostupidquestions in When do you start feeling bad about asking for a raise?

You can feel bad if you not getting the raise helps the other employees you’re feeling bad for. That of course never happens. The only party gaining by you not asking for a raise is your employer.

Chetzemoka ,

This is the answer. If declining the raise could somehow increase the pay of other workers, I'd be all for it. But it won't.

You can hate the game and still play it well, OP

ipkpjersi , to selfhosted in Self hosting my own Lemmy instance was so much fun

I wanna look into self-hosting my own Lemmy instance some time. Once I have more time to figure it out with my home network local server w/ public cloud VPS OpenVPN server setup (likely with Docker containers too) I’ll take a look into it. You’re right, it’ll likely be fun and right up my alley too.

SgtThunderC_nt , to nostupidquestions in When do you start feeling bad about asking for a raise?

You’re the only person who will ever advocate for your own well-being. A business has an entire workforce that advocate for their well-being.

Chetzemoka ,

Collectively advocate even! Some sort of group, a "union" of like minded employees we could call it

mrmule , to selfhosted in Self hosting my own Lemmy instance was so much fun

We really need a CPanel/Softaculous installer like we have for wordpress etc. Would love to host, but atm there’s so much backend config for JoeDev to deal with.

reality_boy , to showerthoughts in Curiosity is not a guarantee of intelligence, but a lack of curiosity is the opposite. Curiosity is far easier to probe in smalltalk and interviews without self awareness filters.

Intelligence is a collection of multiple things. Curiosity is a contributor, but far from an integral part.

Someone can be a brilliant mathematician, capable of computing complex equations that would stump most computers (metaphorically at least), but they may utterly lack creativity and curiosity. In any definition of intelligence we would consider them highly intelligent.

On the flip side someone may be completely filled with curiosity about the world, but lack the intelligence to read or write.

Technically that is a learned skill, this is why intelligence is really a fairly useless measure. What is intelligence? Memorizing lots of facts? Having loads of education? A built in understanding of the world that others lack (common sense)?

I think what really matters is that you find the thing in life where you fit, rather than worrying about how we measure up. I have known very intelligent people who were worthless human beings, and simple minded people who made the world more special every day. We focus too much on being smart, it is one of the least important attributes.

EuphoricPenguin22 ,
@EuphoricPenguin22@normalcity.life avatar

There’s also always a million reasons why your intelligence test might not be quite accurate, and certainly a person themselves will never be able to accurately assess their intelligence without some sort of test. An objective ruler to measure intelligence by is far from trivial, and essentially impossible. It’s especially impossible in the sense that a single test could accurately sum up a person’s capacity to be a productive human being as one number.

Oh, and the other mind-bending realization is that our perception of what it means to be intelligent is ultimately influenced by our own intelligence. So, chances are we’re all probably conceptualizing what it means to be successful in different ways anyway. In this way, there is a chance that the things you envy, like talent or skills you lack, are something that you can teach yourself. The things you’re aware of and can grasp conceptually are probably things you can learn to fully understand. Whether you have the time or motivation to learn new things is ultimately a different question entirely. So, take time to learn new things. In that sense, everyone can always become smarter than they are right now.

Anticorp ,

What is intelligence?

(1) : the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations : reason

also : the skilled use of reason

(2) : the ability to apply knowledge to manipulate one’s environment or to think abstractly as measured by objective criteria (such as tests)

pe1uca , to selfhosted in Outbound posts and comments on my instance not working

I can see several of your test posts from my instance, probably you searched for it before your posts, so those instances imported it without posts and since no one is subscribed to your community then no posts are sent to those instances.

MrJukes OP , (edited )

I wonder if it has something to do with me recreating my instance. I didn’t have it set up properly the first time so I blew away the initial vm and spun up another one. I am subscribed to my community on those other servers with accounts on those servers.

I just tried creating a new community: !test Same deal. I can find it and create posts from both lemmy.one and lemmy.world. But posts I create on lemmy.secondpartysoftware.com don’t show up on the others.

RoundSparrow ,

posts I create on lemmy.secondpartysoftware.com don’t show up on the others.

your server isn’t going to send copies to other servers unless an account on that remote server subscribes. You said you created a new community, nobody is going to be subscribed.

MrJukes OP ,

I have accounts on lemmy.one and lemmy.world that I subscribed to the new community from.

MrJukes OP ,

oh weird, I tried creating a post from a different account on my instance “subscriber” instead of “mrjukes”. That post is showing up on the other servers…so it is something weird about my “mrjukes” account or something…

Yeah… but I think its overkill. The root cert would be on the same box somewhere nearby. Compromising the host has the same issue as plaintext.

Lemmylefty , to nostupidquestions in When do you start feeling bad about asking for a raise?
@Lemmylefty@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t want you to feel guilty for asking for what you’re worth, but it’s good that you are thinking about those that also work hard and aren’t getting paid as much.

Does your company have a union? If it doesn’t, if you want to help those poorer than you, you can spend time looking into how to start one.

    You can also do fun stuff like running the app as a separate user, and using sudo+xhost to access it. Most Linux firewalls allow you to set a rule with uid-affinity, so you could restrict the additional user to a whitelist of IP’s.

    Two of my favorite meats. If I could get some cheap-ish I’d definitely try it. However, nobody sells it locally and all online retailers want around $30 a pound, so that’s not happening.

    curiosityLynx ,

    Well, it's basically beef without fat, so equivalent to a high quality lean steak. In addition, ostriches have more narrow climate requirements than cattle and can be considered more aggressive than cattle. It makes sense that it is expensive.

    Gator didn't taste like chicken when I tried it. It was slightly fishy and had a chew texture. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed in the experience.

    Catoblepas ,

    When I tried it was like slightly fishy, chewy chicken. Not as bad as a bite of all gristle, but almost. I had it fried and breaded, it might do better in a stew or something to break it down.
