Meta = Facebook = not to be trusted

kromem ,

Weird take.

What’s not to be trusted in Meta lagging behind their competitors in AI so they strategize open sourcing their model in order to subvert their competition?

This is pretty standard and transparent a move, and one that brings a multi million dollar trained AI to the masses under an extremely broad license that only requires companies with more than 700 million MAU to request permission for it and its derivatives.

Do you not trust websites built on React because it was made and open sourced by Meta?

At a certain point blind tribalistic takes around companies which are often much more nuanced crosses over into unproductive.

Yes 😂

I would correct your spelling mistake but talking about downvotes, i know what the punishment is

spaduf ,

Quite a few of the popular instances don’t even have downvotes.

Looks like Facebook wants Llama to be to ChatGPT what Stable Diffusion is to Dall-E/MidJourney.

Exactly as described in the letter.

Desktops and PCs are just OS name and version. Proxmox cluster is Ankh-Morpork (from Disc world) and nodes are Ankh Morpork street names: Treacle Mine, Pseudopolis Yard, Attic Bee, etc.

If I have to click: ‘deny’ a gazillion times, then I just leave. If they have the alternative: ‘deny all’, then it’s OK.

I have a strict 2-click rule. If I’m not able to disagree to all cookies with two clicks I’m leaving the site again

2 clicks or 10 seconds, whichever comes first.

Text messaging apps for one on one or group chats. Lot of my friends use discord and set up a channel just got us for when playing games or watching shows together.

I don’t use any type social media where people are actively encouraged to associate their real identity with and share personal photos or videos on a public feed.

I generally ask the person whether they close the door when they go take a dump. Everyone does it, everyone knows why you’re going into that room.

The Modern Rogue yt channel put it best imo “It’s not that you’re doing anything wrong but it’s your business”

So they understood absolutely nothing of what all the scientists said only a few weeks ago: make a pause with training new AI’s!

kromem ,

That’s not what the scientists said, and technically given the performance metrics of this LLM are in line with GPT-3 and not meeting or exceeding the state of the art GPT-4, this model is entirely in line with what would have been allowable research and productization under the proposed measures they’d put forward (which only called out pausing advancing the state of the art).

I have no experience with BitWarden, but I do like 1Password. I previously used LastPass, and 1Password has much better browser/device integration, in my experience. I’ve been happy with it and intend to keep my family subscription.

joel_feila , to linux in Why is Linux so frustrating for some people?
@joel_feila@lemmy.world avatar

Well lets look at what i did to switch to linux. It was about 2 years ago and I was still using windows 8 since I didn’t all the spyware in my operating system. I went with linux mint first since it was stated to be super new user friendly. I was so new to linux that I had to ask what neofetch was and how to use it. It was easy to use but I mostly just use web browser, steam, and libre office, which I had been useing libre office for years before that. Linux mint made a very frictionless new user experience. But I still needed that motive to move onto to something now. For me that breaking point was windows just having so must spyware in the os. Rather then using windows 10 or 11 I held onto window to windows 8 and then moved onto linux mint.

sj_zero , to selfhosted in what is the current recommendation for a simple home NAS?

I bought an asustor a while back because I wanted my critical files protected by drive mirroring. I was pleasantly surprised by how nice it was. Not just as a basic NAS, but it also has a really nice ecosystem of apps that can run on it, so for example if you want to run a local nextcloud, you can do that without doing anything on a terminal.

Brkdncr , to nostupidquestions in Is there a way I can force my garage open from the outside?

Get the pull cord somehow. If there is an emergency release, put a coat hanger between the door slats or drill a small hole into the door to pull it with a coat hanger.
