My ex was an operating room nurse. She had a few choice stories.

Dude came in with an English cucumber stuffed so far up there they needed to knock him out to remove it. It’s all slithery and soft. It was literally baked.

My ex used to love cucumber. Chow down on them all the time. Not after that.

Better that only you know than everybody knows but nobody wants to talk about it. Communal shame is terrifying. Here’s an excerpt from the story Guts.

This friend of mine, he waits months under a black cloud, waiting for his folks to confront him. And they never do. Ever. Even now he’s grown up, that invisible carrot hangs over every Christmas dinner, every birthday party. Every Easter egg hunt with his kids, his parents’ grandkids, that ghost carrot is hovering over all of them.

hatnale , (edited ) to asklemmy in How do you get over a crush?

I call my personal strategy the 3Ds: Distance, Distraction, and Description.

First, I distance myself from my crush. This includes exposure such as social media. I have, in the past, told my crush that I needed time to get over them before I can be in a place to interact with them again. The first time, I never really could and had to cut all contact. The second (and last) time it went well and we were able to continue our friendship for years until life distanced us. It’s all context-dependent, so you’ll have to decide for yourself if you still want to be friends. Otherwise, out of sight and out of mind.

Next, I distract myself. While I still spend time processing my emotions and disappointment, I make sure to do things I enjoy to take my mind off everything. I hang out with friends, play video games, read, watch movies, etc. If not, I will spend whatever idle time I have thinking about my crush, which can make it difficult to get over them.

Finally, description. This one sounds a little weird because I had to use a word to fit the 3D theme, but this one is all about processing. I write about my feelings or talk to my friends/a professional about it. Sometimes, I research other people’s experiences and reflect on how I relate. No matter the medium, I describe what I’m feeling or how I’m hurting. It releases some of that internal pressure I feel and sometimes gives me something I can analyze and understand about myself and my feelings.

Don’t know how much this helps you but everyone’s process is different. As long as you are exploring ways to move on and being mindful of what works and what doesn’t (for you), you’ll get there with time. Good luck and feel better soon my friend!

This is the most comprehensive strategy that I can vouch for.

Done all of them.

I would say, the last one is underrated but very much useful not just for getting over a crush but for personal growth in general, which is a lifetime skill.

You’d be surprised by how many adults don’t understand themselves or even avoid doing self-reflection. In consequences, stumble upon the same problem again and again without taking different/better approach to handle them.

Don_Dickle ,

I have known friends who have had a crush on someone. For me I never had. But they were not honest upfront. On my first date I told a date that I was a functional alcoholic and a traveling nurse. And I do not do sex on the first or the second date. I leave it up to them if they leave I know its not ment to be and never think about it again. Depends on how fine they are a couple of them I may have tickled my skittle to them but thats it. If you are having real problems or thoughts of harm please call 988 in the states or give me a pm and maybe just maybe we can talk.

KyuubiNoKitsune , to asklemmy in How do you get over a crush?

Accept that not everyone will like you back, in fact, most won’t. Mourne the loss, be sad, cry, then get up and carry on, because there will be another.

I also prefer to stay friends if I can, because if I loved them for some reason, them not feeling anything for me doesn’t change that, so I want them in my life.

Some of this was only possible due to the fact that I have had my heart broken too many times to count, so it’s also a thing of practicing radical acceptance.

I don’t eat their often either, but the current meal deal with fries, drink, double burger, and nugs for $5 is pretty great by today’s fast food prices, so I’ve gone a few times over the last month.

Everything at the one I’ve been going to seems on the up and up. (I use the apk and hit the drive through). Foods been between pretty warm and hot every time. Only real gripe is that every time I order the burger no ketchup, no onions, and extra Mustard, and every time there’s only the tiniest damned bit of mustard on it. Like…I want some Mustard, damn it.

Not if it’s treated like a social media for whatever reason.

Xing (German) and Headhunter (Russian), for instance, both allow you to hunt for jobs and browse companies all without Facebook-like posts and corporate culture.

LinkedIn is a very curious artifact of moronic cargo cult-like chase for money and market share where companies just try and copy whatever the big player did, like Facebook at the time, hoping to make loads of money for the investors and stakeholders, but the absolutely anti-human corporate culture of the US makes the place is even more moronic.

I only use linked in every few years when I job hop. Literally the only reason I refuse to get rid of it entirely is that I doubled my salary the time I got a job.

blady_blah ,

That seems so weird. Linked in is simply a way to connect with co-workers so you can contact them when you’re no longer at the same job. I don’t have them in my Facebook, I didn’t have them in my phone, but if I want to contact them for connections or anything, LinkedIn is the place for that. How much you interact with the posting garbage is entirely up to you. I do it extremely little and I have no problem with LinkedIn.

ohlaph ,

That’s the only reason I keep mine as well.

citrusface ,

I provide my phone number and email to coworkers that I want to connect with when they leave a job. Linkedin is corporate hustle poison and I refuse to be part of it.

blady_blah ,

Hey, whatever works for you. There are many people who I’m friendly with, but I’m not friends with, and they can be useful to find out information about employment opportunities or other things like that. Whether or not you want to call it “corporate hustle poison” or networking, or just being friendly is up to you. If you refuse to be part of it, no skin off my back, but if someone wants to be part of it then that’s perfectly fine too. There’s nothing intrinsically wrong with LinkedIn, Facebook or almost any other social media platform. It’s really in how you use it.

spongebue , to nostupidquestions in You a sales bargain hunter or do you pay normal?

I usually consider myself frugal, but try to get decent quality (a major part of the difference between frugal and cheap) and occasionally I splurge. Yesterday I bought 4 shirts. They came from a medium-high end store (Dillard’s, for those who have one nearby and know what I’m talking about). This is the time of year when lighter summer shirts are getting marked down. I’ve needed some more of them for a bit but waited for this moment.

Also, I’m a sucker for fancy cheeses and desserts from our Kroger variant. But it’s rare that I buy something that isn’t on manager’s special.

I browse Facebook Marketplace all the time for stuff.

Sometimes I want something and dream about it, and it takes an excellent sale to get me to actually buy it. Like the shades I got for my house last year (50% off at Home Depot)

I also brought a brand new car in 2022 when the market was bonkers. Not the fanciest car in the world (Chevy Bolt EUV) but it was a hell of a value, gas prices were going nuts with Russia having invaded Ukraine, and my 2005 Ford Focus wasn’t going to last forever (still serving my wife’s cousin’s stepdaughter well though)

I’ve also gotten furniture and stuff over the years. Maybe I’ll smile at the idea of a sale, but realistically so many things are “on sale” more often than not (even if that sale rotates between 25% off and BOGO half off)

I once saw a meme saying that being a Midwesterner means that if someone compliments something you bought, you need to explain that it was a good deal. That resonates with me.

Anyway, I’m procrastinating my nightly chores before bed. Thanks, but I need to work on that 🙂

Programming Languages today: Rust, Go, Typescript

Programming Languages back then: C, B, C#, C++

LOL

intelisense ,

C# is much more recent than C/BCPL etc. What’s interesting, though, is how many of C these more modern languages are inspired by C. C is also very much still in use!

LeFantome ,

The name C++ is an inside joke as ++ is the C language increment operator, meant to imply that C++ is an improvement on C.

I have heard several times that the name C# was meant to look like the ++ had been added again to the name C++. The syntax of C# was chosen to be familiar to programmers that knew C++.

If we are saying old languages use letters for names and that newer ones use words, it is worth noting that C# was also heavily inspired by Java, which came first. Both Java and JavaScript are from 1995 ( iolder than C# ).

In the grand scheme, Go is not much newer than C#. Go is from 2009 and C# is from 2000. That might seem like a lot but Go was intended as an alternative to C which is from 1972.

C got its name as a progression over B, which started the whole single letter thing, but C syntax was chosen to look like ALGOL ( 1958 ). So we have to blame ALGOL for the look of C, C++, Java, C#, JavaScript, and even Rust.

Two of the oldest languages as FORTRAN and Lisp. Language names were often abbreviations ( such as FORmula TRANslation for FORTRAN ). Lisp was originally LISP ( list processing ) but the name Lisp, from 1960, fits right in with Go and Rust I would say.

The trend is certainly towards more whimsical names though. An early name for C was NB which stood for “New B”. If it were named like we do today, maybe it would have been called “Newbie” or some synonym of that. I kind of like Punk.

You can do something cathartic. After getting dumped, I once pushed a tree down in my back garden and carried it around to the front of the house for disposal. My muscles ached and I was cut and bruised but felt a lot better afterwards. Other times I’ve just gone out drinking with friends. There are sater more controlled ways of doing it - try exercising to exhaustion, get away for the weekend and GI hiking, drive a tank, go to one of those places where you can smash things up, organise a big paintballing session, etc. Something that breaks you out of your routine, preferably gets you out of your local area, needs all your focus and tires you out. It should take your mind off things, get you so focused and tired you aren’t brooding about it and provide a symbolic break so you can leave your baggage behind on the other side.

It’s not an instant cure, this will all take time but it’s a decisive first step.

Not the most dramatic, but when I was really little I remember play fighting with my brothers, and falling backwards off the bed and hitting my head against a dresser.

There was no wound or anything but I remember seeing all kinds of fucked up colors at the moment of impact. Despite being a huge crybaby, I’m pretty sure I didn’t cry or freak out, I was just extremely fatigued.

TootSweet , to science in Is there a scientific calendar which uses a different reference than Jesus?

I don’t know of any books I can recommend, but I’d definitely be down for 13 months with one being short. We could do 12 months of 30 days each plus a 13th month of 5 (or on leap years 6) days.

As far as anything that exists today, there is the Unix Timestamp which is defined as the number of seconds since (the entirely arbitrary time of) midnight January 1st 1970 UTC. Of course, “1970” only makes sense in the context of the Gregorian calendar which still has to do with the birth of Jesus. So, it’s not exactly what you’re looking for. But maybe it’s at least more removed from “the birth of Jesus” than the Gregorian calendar we all generally use.

I guess if you’re interested in this stuff, you might be interested in learning about ISO-8601, a standard way of representing dates/times in text. And also the concept of “leap seconds” and things like Leap Smearing.

There’s also a great short story about someone trying to explain to an alien with no familarity with earth how our calendar works, but I’m having trouble finding it now. I’ll edit this post with a link if I can find it.

ShrimpCurler ,

Why would you have 30 days in those months? I’m a fan of having exactly 4 weeks each month (28 days), across 13 months. Then every month is the same. If the 1st is on a Monday, then the 1st of every month will always be a Monday. You just need to add a leap week in every now and again.

HubertManne ,

just reduce the week to 6 days and every month is exactly 5 weeks

HubertManne ,

Id rather intersped the days as out of month days. 4 for the equinoxes and solsti but not sure where to put the fifth although I lean toward an extra one after the winter solsctice as the new year.
