I would use Gitlab only in an airgapped network. Password resets sent to attacker-supplied emails is such a complete failure of a security model it seems like it is only a matter of time until the next critical vulnerability.

667 , to amateur_radio in Random question for today: Considering people who are not amateurs, if you wanted to create increased visibility and participation in amateur radio, what would you do?
@667@lemmy.radio avatar

One of the challenges I’ve long experienced with any of my hobbies is they are often niche and beyond the interest of most of the people I talk with; Amateur Radio even moreso. Nearly none of the people I interact with in daily life “get it”. They have their phones and Internet and don’t recognize the continuous marvels which constitute Amateur Radio.

I think all the -OTAs (POTA, SOTA, etc) have done a wonderful job of increasing visibility of our hobby, but to really supercharge it, every radio operator should also be willing to hang a sign which encourages passersby to come ask questions and engage. I was up at a fairly popular community park with a 200’ (~61m) span OCFD and not a single person approached. I reckon they’re unwilling because of how “official” a setup looks and don’t want to risk crossing into an area they’re “not supposed to be in”.

There’s not enough popular media which portrays the utility of Amateur Operators, which is probably an extension of the general unfamiliarity of the hobby by authors. Think of what percentage of any of the movies you’ve seen in the last 20 years and one can probably count on one hand the accurate portrayal of amateur radio communications.

These are just my initial thoughts having woken up not too long ago. I’d really be excited to hear others’ opinions.

craigify ,

“every radio operator should also be willing to hang a sign which encourages passersby to come ask questions and engage”

I thought about this EXACTLY! We travel a good bit in our bus conversion. I’m working on building some semi permanent radio equipment in here. Often we find ourselves in parks and other natural areas, which I plan on setting up antennas for fun.

I was thinking that I should put up a little sign that says come talk about radios!

Thorry84 , to techsupport in Cloned Windows 10 drive keeps taking me to automatic repair after using clonezilla

Did you try running the repair to see if it fixes it?

The reason is the boot drive now has a different ID, so Windows can’t boot from it. So it assumes (rightly so) that the boot drive has changed and launches into repair to fix it. This is something repair can fix for you normally.

Another way is to open up a command prompt in the repair environment (or from a Windows USB stick). Then use the bcdtool to edit the boot options and tell it to use the correct drive. There are plenty of instructions on this found with a simple Google search.

The cloning probably went fine, so don’t assume it has anything to do with that. Just a completely different ssd which trips up the boot.

Notably on Linux device ID are also normally used, so you would have the same kind of issue. Ignore all the Linux fanboys that go Windows bad Linux good and don’t actually help you.

My main OS (debian) ssd started throwing Io errors this Friday night and I had to work Saturday, only image I had laying around was Fedora Kinoite. So that’s what I’m running until I order a new drive. I’m getting my wife a new laptop soon and was considered silverblue (she’s a Mac user but very quick with tech in general).

Anyway after using it a few days, I think when I get my new drive I might just go ahead and put Kinoite on it. I’m used to running my dev stuff in containers anyway and toolbox makes it super easy. Rpm-ostree is a breeze (though it takes a minute to build on this ancient USB hdd, I’m replacing my dieing SSD with an nvme so I don’t foresee the ostree builds as being an issue).

I think immutable is absolutely the way forward, especially for less computer literate folks. It will keep them more protected and if they do mess up something the rollback is a breeze.

Also “Cenozoic” is rather… broad… so for anyone who is curious like me, nautilus…es? Nautili? Whichever, they slowly retreated to their current habitat starting around the Oligocene to the end of the Miocene (source).

Fun fact sea snake scales are actually hydrophobic and there is a thin layer of air around it. The snake can breathe from this bubble of scale air and some pacific island claim divers can stay underwater longer by catching sea snakes and breathing from their tails, also I just made all that up.

I almost believed you. But the part of divers breathing snake ass was too much.

semperverus , to programmerhumor in Surely "1337" is the same as 1337, right?
@semperverus@lemmy.world avatar

JSON has types.

Many API developers may choose not to use them, but they are absolutely there.

You specify the type by including or excluding quotation marks, and then for the types without quotation marks, you either include or exclude a decimal point to specify float or integer, and for boolean you use characters (specifically true or false). Arrays are wrapped in [] and objects are wrapped in {}.

JSON data as a whole is passed as one giant string because the REST protocol demands it. But once it’s been pulled in and properly interpreted, there are absolutely types in the data.

suction ,

Absolutely. Who doesn’t type JSON?

meliaesc ,

We aren’t using json.atChar(17) to get values?

semperverus ,
@semperverus@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not sure if i’m missing a joke here, so:

In case you’re making a joke: The people who don’t type JSON are using controllers.

In case you’re asking a serious question: the people who don’t type JSON are the people in OP’s image. They are technically using types, but that type is literally always string. They don’t use integers, they don’t use booleans. This is functional but may not be the best choice, depending on what kinds of data their system is supposed to handle.

Bach37strad ,

Would you mind elaborating a bit for someone who doesn’t do much coding? I’m guessing I’m one of the people you’re talking about.

The only coding I’ve done has been via json for raspberry pi, 3d printer, and homeassistant applications.

I know it’s a text base language, but how do it’s commands relate to integers? I’ve used boolean, I get that bit.

cm0002 ,

When passing or storing data in code you usually have to specify what type of data is it. An int is an integer, so numbers, there’s also boolean (true/false) and many others. There’s also string which is just characters of any kind (for the most part) which pretty much makes it a catch-all, since numbers can be a string along with letters and special characters.

But to use a number as a number after it’s been received as a string it has to be converted to an int, which means extra code, more effort, more failure points etc etc.

slimarev92 ,

Wait, some people don’t know that??? It’s literally called “JavaScript Object Notation”.

netvor ,
@netvor@lemmy.world avatar

Great post, but I have to “well, actually” you on this little thing:

the REST protocol demands it.

REST is not a protocol, and does not have to do anything with JSON.
