The way the foss sites work is basically like torrents though so it has the whole “the more people that watch a video, the faster it becomes for everyone” effect. The primary upside is that each site serves as a guaranteed seeder.

How are you parsing JSON on the command line?

I want to extract and process the metadata from PNG images and the first line of .safetensors files for LLM’s and LoRA’s. I could spend ages farting around with sed or awk but formats of files are constantly changing. I’d like a faster way to see a summary of training and a few other details when they are available.

Python has built-in json parsing, as does (and i know this isnt gonna be popular) PowerShell.

Hasnt android (or at least custom roms) had this since forever?

Apple is bringing RCS to the iPhone in iOS 18 (www.theverge.com)

Apple has announced that its Messages app will support the RCS messaging standard in iOS 18. RCS offers more advanced features compared to traditional SMS, including higher-quality media, typing indicators, and end-to-end encryption. This move will improve messaging between iOS and Android devices, which currently rely on the...

Summer is the worst season of the year, isn't?

The sun sucks, being forced to shower like every 4 hours just to not feeling sweaty, the fucking mosquitoes, the fact you can’t wear anything that you want anymore due the heat, the people outside… The fucking beach. I try to avoid it… The fucking sand, not a fan of it. Is scratchy, harsh, annoying and it infiltrates in...

Regardless of if their gpus are weaker, they are absolutely causing the focus on gaming laptops to wane, and wane hard. Why build a high end $2000 laptop that sells 10,000 units when you could make a $600-1000 handheld that sells 250,000 to 3,000,000 units?

Earth falling out of orbit and careening towards the sun.

Looking up at the sky, I see a void open in the center, going from blue to black, then eventually to blinding orange into white before everyone collectively melts and then incinerates in the extreme heat.

Worst off, its a slow descent, so we have time to contemplate it as it happens.

Is Modding Hogwarts Legacy on Linux Possible?

Hello everyone! I just wanted to ask if its possible to make mods for Hogwarts Legacy entirely on a Linux machine, and if it is if anyone can point me to any resources to get started with setting it up on Linux (guides specific to making actual mods I can probably find easily and I guess will be relevant regardless of if the...

semperverus ,
@semperverus@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, you mod it the same way you do on windows, but the game is saved in a different location.

I did a full playthrough with the wands are guns mod on linux just fine

Can I refuse MS Authenticator?

So my company decided to migrate office suite and email etc to Microsoft365. Whatever. But for 2FA login they decided to disable the option to choose “any authenticator” and force Microsoft Authenticator on the (private) phones of both employees and volunteers. Is there any valid reason why they would do this, like it’s...

This was definitely true ten years ago! I’m sure you’ll catch up to the modern linux experience soon though.

semperverus ,

The year of the linux desktop was when AMD open sourced their drivers around 5 years ago and Valve partnered with codeweavers to drop Proton. Its only been uphill from there.

semperverus ,
@semperverus@lemmy.world avatar

I keep hoping that mobile linux will get better and pinephone will start popping off but the software experience so far has been absolutely miserable and progress has been incredibly slow on gnome and kde mobile experiences, modem drivers (missed calls and sms), and so on.

There is progress, so it’ll get there eventually but how long that is is hard to say.

And i know it requires volunteers in their free time. I’d like to contribute to the code but i’m far too inexperienced to do so and im too broke to fund anything. They expect far more detail in bug reports than im able to provide, so its all a wash.

We are all the same entity, just different instances, existing inside of the greater consciousness that is the universe. We have performed every great and evil act to ourselves, as we are all the same entity.

@semperverus@lemmy.world avatar

I dont mean that we are the same as in each human is exactly like one another.

I mean we are the same as in there is no “we”, “we” is an illusion. There is only one of us, experiencing existence through the lens of each living creature simultaneously. “We” are the universe itself. The humans, the animals, all of the matter and energy are just perturbations in our collective fabric. The current body in which you are experiencing life is just one of many appendiges.

You are yourself and you are your parents. You are the primordial cavemen. You are hitler, and you are ghandi.

All of these experiences of each life feed back into the greater consciousness.

I think that the reason for all the weirdness in wayland is because they are considering more usecases than just desktop with taskbar and window title bars with _ [ ] X buttons. Think signage, mobile interfaces, kiosks, and other weird non-traditional interfaces. Its why absolute window positioning is dumb the way it is too.

Python is great, but stuff like this just drives me up the wall (lemmy.world)

Explanation: Python is a programming language. Numpy is a library for python that makes it possible to run large computations much faster than in native python. In order to make that possible, it needs to keep its own set of data types that are different from python’s native datatypes, which means you now have two different...

The JS thing makes perfect sense though,

“1” is a string. You declared its type by using quotes. myString = “1” in a dynamically typed language is identical to writing string myString = “1” in a statically typed language. You declare it in the symbols used to write it instead of having to manually write out string every single time.

2 is an integer. You know this because you used neither quotes nor a decimal place surrounding it. This is also explicit.

“1” + 2, if your interpreter is working correctly, should do the following

  • identify the operands from left to right, including their types.
  • note that the very first operand in the list is a string type as you explicitly declared it as such by putting it in quotes.
  • cast the following operands to string if they are not already.
  • use the string addition method to add operands together (in this case, this means concatenation).

In the example you provided, “1” + 2 is equivalent to “1” + “2”, but you’re making the interpreter do more work.

QED: “1” + 2 should, in fact, === “12”, and your lack of ability to handle a language where you declare types by symbols rather than spending extra effort writing the type out as a full english word is your own shortcoming. Learn to declare and handle types in dynamic languages better, don’t blame your own misgivings on the language.

Mirror all data on NAS A to NAS B

I’m duplicating my server hardware and moving the second set off site. I want to keep the data live since the whole system will be load balanced with my on site system. I’ve contemplated tools like syncthing to make a 1 to 1 copy of the data to NAS B but i know there has to be a better way. What have you used successfully?

semperverus ,
@semperverus@lemmy.world avatar

Considering the harm it has done in addition to its usefulness, yes.

Run NextCloud on your NAS and you’ll be set.

semperverus ,

Whats sad is that people keep wanting more client-side anticheat to fix this, when the real answer is server-side anticheat and changing the engine to stop being so leaky with that much information.
