I haven’t tried MPV, but everything I’ve tried so far results in the typical green and purple image, unless I do hardware tonemapping on the server. I also don’t much like the idea of having to load an external player on every device either, especially my Android TV box.
Upgrading my GPU seems like the best solution; I just want to make sure I get something that will do what I need it to.
I thought the same with Android TV, but at least for me, it doesn’t work at all; I’ve tried two different Android TV boxes, too, and they both have the same problem.
I wish I could find everything in SDR or at least HDR10, but that’s not always an option. I’ve found several “Linux ISOs” that are only available in DV, and some where the only option is 4k HDR or 1080p, and I really prefer to avoid anything below 4k unless absolutely necessary. 4k SDR is always my preferred format, though.
Not sure what Linux ISOs are, but it's pretty rare that something is only available with Dolby Vision and not HDR10. Have you verified that HDR10 gives you trouble? 4K HDR is also usually HDR10, unless specifically marked as DV, in my experience.
Anyway, another option, if you don't care for HDR, is to transcode/tonemap everything in the background. This way, you don't have to worry about performance during playback.
Linux ISOs are copies of installers for various Linux distributions. They’re totally free and legal to distribute, and a very above-board and legitimate thing to store on a server with more space than a normal person could reasonably need. They are very much not copyrighted content.
That’s exactly it. If you are reading in dark mode and look away, you can still see the phantom text. Its like staring at the sun and then closing your eyes (don’t do this, its dangerous)
Ansible vault. All my config files and scripts are deployed with Ansible. Usually they are pushing those into a file or environment variable but if you scope permissions narrowly and don’t run services/containers as root you should be somewhat safe. If someone has filesystem access you’re already in big trouble.
Instead I’d focus on keeping your attack surface as small as possible. Keep services behind a VPN or segment public facing services to a separate VLAN or docker network.
It’s a great book for sure. Two things I really liked are
spoilerI haven’t read a good alien contact book in a long time, so I really enjoyed that part. Also, the whole arc of “I must have been convinced to do the right thing because I’m here - I guess I’m a good guy, and Rocky did the same.” Was really powerful.
And, of course, Weir does a really good job with hard SF, keeping things anchored and believable.
Licensing issues aside, the most important thing to me about Spotify is the recommendation engine. Their weekly playlists that are autogenerated “Discovery Weekly” and “Release Radar” are amazing and places where I have discovered a TON of new really good music. Any service that I ever switch to would have to have something similar.
Well the two I mentioned are autogenerated brand new each week, so they never really repeat anything. At least not that I’ve noticed. Other playlists I don’t really listen to much.
I think they’re probably referring to the auto-generated lists based on top artists the user has listened to. Those are extremely repeat heavy and is why I never use them. Weekly and Radar are terrific though, as you said.
@Jarmer sounds to me like the analogue solution to that is to find DJs or radio stations (very possibly/probably independant community stations) that play the general kind of stuff you're looking for.
It didn’t help that the reddit admins banned a huge chunk of moderators who refused to comply with their decisions. That sort of thing doesn’t sit well with creators.
Depends what you’re doing. If you’re not doing intensive reading it’s okay. If your eyes are more tired with light mode, it just means the night light filter, or the brightness isn’t adjusted right.
spoilerI think there’s a big difference between sacrificing yourself for unknown others, when someone else could potentially do it (or you can convince yourself of that) and knowing that someone you know and care about personally WILL DIE, and NO ONE else can do anything about it. Grace was always a good person, it’s the personal stakes that changed.
spoilerOh I definitely agree the Grace is a good person the whole time. He works so hard on this project mostly because of his kids. He wants them to have a future. But going on the Hail Mary was the way to save the kids. He tried to say someone else could do it but conceded when Scott pointed out how bullshit that was. And when push came to shove he said “Okay, it’s true! I’m afraid! I don’t want to die! I worked my ass off on this project and I deserve to live!” (Pg 392) But even though he worked his ass off to save earth and to find a solution, he decided that Rocky deserves to live, not him.
So I agree with your overall point, but I think Grace changed a lot too.
Ok both groups seem to agree that dark mode is either not bad for your eyes or better. The linked YouTube video isn’t some medical board or anything so I wouldn’t go by them.
What is even more interesting is the little battle between the AAO and the AOA. One being ophthalmologists and the other optometrists.
The former call themselves medical doctors, and outline both terms providing difference between them for easy access.
The latter, optometrists, call themselves doctors as much as possible in the context of medicine but seem to avoid calling themselves medical doctors because they know they arent. The only mention of ophthalmology on the AOA website seems to be in reference to groups that oppose them, which seems biased.
Like optometrists are trying as hard as possible to be considered medical doctors in as many ways as possible without having gone to medical school. Can’t say I care for the AOA or their articles now.
VLC. And on ancient Androids, MX Player. That one I use on my Samsung GT-S5830i (Android 2.3.6). I think the Android VLC may even be able to play ripped .iso files but I haven’t tried that yet. I’ll try ripping some smaller DVD and I’ll report back to you.
