I’ve been using Photoprism. Single-user is fine for me. I see lots of people switching to immich, but haven’t checked it out myself.

Photoprism supports sharing albums via link to people who don’t have accounts. Mine is remotely accessible using Tailscale. I would like to set up proper remote access via DNS, but haven’t made that leap yet, I’m too nervous about opening ports up.

lemming741 ,

I’m happy with photoprism too. I paid for the photosync plugins.

I don’t love the free-mium model, but you can edit your docker config to unlock it I hear.

Not anymore it syncs up with their subscription server to enable features. If they don’t enable proper multi user support soon I’m going to bail.

Nuuskis9 , to unixporn in Do you consider the term "rice" or "ricer" to be racist?

I’ve been living with this term for a decade now and this is literally the first time I hear someone gets offended from that word.

I don’t think OP said they were offended.

@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Just because no one you know gets offended doesn’t mean it’s not racist.

Nuuskis9 ,

Lol. But if it was the case, I bet I’ve seen this word offending someone or being racist would’ve occured at least once during the decade?

Linux users still brigs up wifi and SystemD regurarly so if there were a room for this particular word being offensive I’m 100% sure it would be discussed at least twice during a decade.

I could accept op being right if this was discussed more than zero times before, even though I don’t get how and why people gets offended by any word. Even less I get why on earth anybody would get offended for some 3rd person and I accept it just being me who don’t gets it.

scrubbles ,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Again, just because no one in the room you were talking in thought it was offensive doesnt mean it’s not outside of that room.

After all, you’re here, in a different room with new people and the new people are offering you new perspectives. One of those new perspectives is that that is a racist term.

RightHandOfIkaros , to retrogaming in I got a CRT from the street for free and sold my emulator hardware

For the vast majority of people, CRT shaders come close enough to approximate the look of a CRT, but IMO nothing beats putting the cartridge into the system like 3 times until its exactly flat and works, and the plastic of the controller.

It is of note that emulation is almost a moral obligation at this point. There is no reason that random Billy Joe needs to be charging people $900 for Panzer Dragoon Saga on SEGA Saturn. These games should be $5-$10, to allow all people to be able to experience what came before. And emulation is the solution. Plus, nearly none of the games people emulate are legally purchasable from the publisher or developer anymore.

Procedure8295 OP ,

Re: Emulation, I totally agree.

Good thing is that GDEmu and similar solutions exists where you can utilize the real hardware but emulate the software for many systems.

People, don’t feed the hoarders - burn discs, use SD cards or whatever. The authors of the game do not receive a penny from second hand sales anyway.

LG Wing.

Love the dual screen functionality of course but what’s more impressive is the fact that the 2nd screen is concealed beautifully such that on first glance, you can’t even tell that it’s not a normal phone! The primary camera is also excellent.

The software is pretty shit. LG sacked their mobile division 2 years ago and while they have kept their promise of giving this phone Android 13, they’ve done the bare minimum effort to support it. You couldn’t even tell it’s android 13, has the same UI and features that they shipped with Android 11. The settings app is also inconsistent, some screens have that stock android feel others have the traditional LG UI. And bugs are plenty. The processor is another weak point, it’s not able to keep up in 2023.

Currently just using Synology photos but with an eye on immich, as others have mentioned and plan to switch now that it has facial and object recognition. At this point it can do everything I want and has the benefit of being open source.

You have a Synology and Synology photos will do the features you mentioned (multiple users, different permissions). While I wouldn't recommend it now over Immich I'm curious why you went with photoprism initially?

soulofdragnsfire OP ,

Had the photoprism container set up before I moved to the Synology. That’s really the only reason…

ADHDefy , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in Why people can't handle the truth?
@ADHDefy@kbin.social avatar

When it comes to changing someone's mind, I believe it helps to first question whether there's even a need to do so. If there is, then asking questions is vital. You can't just hit someone with Facts & Logic™ and expect that it will immediately undo something they may have had drilled into them since childhood, or something that requires recognition that would challenge other dearly held beliefs (e.g. "if my dad did a bad thing, then is he not the great, infallible man I thought he was? If he's a bad person and people tell me I look and act just like him, does that mean I'm a bad person, too?"). Finding out why someone believes what they believe, and taking time to understand it yourself and validate their experience is instrumental in opening up people's hearts and minds. Or, at least, that's been my experience and is therefore true to me. 😉

CliveRosfield , to nostupidquestions in How safe is open source software? What are the general benefits?

It’s more safe than closed source because it’s open for all to view and edit. Of course if nobody looks at it then it’s as good as being closed.

Takumidesh ,

I don’t necessarily agree with this. Just because software is open doesn’t mean it’s actually getting audited and it also doesn’t mean the people doing any auditing know what to look for.

On the other hand, closed source (or open source) software can be audited by reputable companies just the same.

The fact that it’s open, in my opinion, can give people a false sense of security with the software.

The log4shell vulnerability existed in the code since 2013 and wasn’t found until the end of 2021.

IamtheMorgz ,

I don’t think the real problem is that the vulnerabilities exist. It’s a question of how many people are looking for those vulnerabilities and what those people’s intentions are. With big open source projects, as someone else already pointed out, the number of good actors far exceeds the malicious ones, so when a vulnerability is identified it’s more likely to be by someone who just wants to patch it, not exploit it for gain. In a closed source project, fewer good actors are looking - only the people allowed to work on the code - but the bad actors are probably pretty much the same. Of course, popularity of the program and what it’s actually doing matter, too, in terms of how interested bad actors are going to be.

I love the idea of open source software for exactly this reason. I see it as a reminder that most people are good.

I’m currently on photoprism like you, but I am looking to switch to immich.

I solved the sharing problem by having a family-only instance locally (accessible via tailscale), connected via WebDAV to a public instance on a cheap VPS (which I also use for other things). We have to share twice, but I don’t have any holes in my firewall. Currently I don’t believe immich can do something like this, but I’d love to be proven wrong
