Mugmoor , to selfhosted in What is your machine naming scheme?
@Mugmoor@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Mine are all based on Norse Myths. My various servers are named for the nine realms, and the personal devices are named after Gods/Heroes/Creatures.

For example my main Desktop rig is named “Midgard” and my phone is “Odin”.

eodur ,

That’s my naming scheme as well. All the big servers are named after the realms. Other devices get monsters, etc

Today , to showerthoughts in All people are their parents for most of the negative years span of their life.

What’s a negative years span?

FizzlePopBerryTwist OP ,

Like 50 years BC = 50 years before Christ. Well, there’s a negative span of years before you fused in to an individual.

At my first job/internship it was fish names (they were dev/qa servers so wiped almost daily): Crappie, Bluegill, Walleye, Marlin, etc.

Current job is medical so it's all professional (i.e gr01sec02, gr02sccm01)

At home I've got a couple of naming schemes for different device types.:

Phones: i-telleuwat(last 4 of the number)
PCs and Media centers: playon(last octet of the IP)
Servers:gimme(service thats hosted)

Hexadecimalkink , to linux in Distro suggestions?

Linux Mint and then don’t worry about it. It just works.

remotedev ,

Just installed this recently. Both monitors worked out the gate, my new headset worked, haven’t had any issues with it yet

EcstaticChance2050 , to nostupidquestions in Is there a Comic book reader app?

Noetic97 , to asklemmy in If you could have one small thing as a superpower. What would it be and why?

The ability to know exactly where anything I think of is located.

Scooter411 , to showerthoughts in When replicants become ubiquitous we will tell them apart from us not by their mannerisms, but by their hands
@Scooter411@lemmy.ml avatar

Until they are so advanced even the hands look like ours.

housepanther , to autism in I wish I knew, for my entire life, why people will choose to sit in any other seat before they choose to sit near me on transit. Do I exude autism?
@housepanther@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

I do not think it is you at all. I am on the autism spectrum myself and I purposely sit away from others because being boxed in by other people causes me to be way overstimulated. I don’t believe it is intended to be a slight against you, rather it’s just people’s preferences.

Epicurus0319 , to nostupidquestions in Where did all this reddit hatred come from?

I hated it, I only just barely put up with the toxic community so I could still visit my favorite subs only (I used apollo so I could ignore the garbage that’d be recommended to us constantly). I used the app-pocalypse as an excuse to leave. Now I only lurk there for the ooh-la-la subs, but as more and more creators there have lately been moving to lemmynsfw I might not even need those subs for much longer.

CodeBlooded ,
@CodeBlooded@programming.dev avatar

Hello, Apollo user. Have you tried wefef.app?

Epicurus0319 ,

Yes, it’s great. I’d also recommend Memmy since it shows downvotes and upvotes separately instead of net score (which lemmy does, idk about the other reddit-like federated sites) to discourage circlejerking

I want to make an app that automatically rickrolls the spam

Empyreus , to showerthoughts in If someone built an anti spam AI bot to answer spam calls the phone lines would just be call centre bots talking to AI bots

Google has a call screening functionality on phones already

pineapplelover ,

All stock pixels have this and I also heard that samsungs also have it too. Also, I think Apple will have it in the next update.

tool ,
@tool@r.rosettast0ned.com avatar

The stock Pixel phone app has this. If you don’t use the stock phone app, you can’t use this feature.

netburnr ,
@netburnr@lemmy.world avatar

Samsung does not have this

greatley ,

It does, Bixby can answer a call, ask what this is about and transcribe it for the owner so he can the decide if he wants to anwser

dtxer ,

I use it and it’s called Bixby. Thought most spam callers don’t make it after the first phrases.

rm_dash_r_star , to nostupidquestions in Data privacy: how to counter the "I have nothing to hide" argument?
@rm_dash_r_star@lemm.ee avatar

Nothing to hide until a person has something to hide. An attitude of “I don’t have anything to hide” may catch up to a person. No one knows what the future holds. One day they might start tracking private information a person does not want tracked, for example financial or medical data. So better to put the fence up now than try to put it up during a stampede.

Personally I keep my data private with a reasonable amount of effort. I try to keep a small internet footprint and there’s stuff I won’t do for the sake of privacy. Going some years back the only social media I engaged in was Reddit until coming here to Lemmy. These are anonymous mediums. It blows my mind that so many people are willing to completely splay out their lives non-anonymously on social media.
