For what it’s worth, this doesn’t seem to be correct. If you look at lemmy.world/instances you will see lemmygrad.ml listed in linked instances, not blocked (defederated) instances.

It’s not a perfect fit, so if you want to use both Lemmy and Mastodon I strongly advice you to have an account in each.

That said, you can follow Lemmy users or communities on Mastodon, likes made on Mastodon to Lemmy posts equate to upvotes here. If you reply to a comment sent from Mastodon, the Mastodon user will see it. But to fully enjoy both, you need 2 accounts.

I’m running casa on Debian on a pi 4. I have three drives attached, two in an external enclosure and one nvme in an Argon nvme case. The last update the two external drives disconnected and won’t reconnect. Last night I took another update and today the nvme is disconnected and doesn’t show up in lsblk of fdisk. I’m pretty sure I’m gonna stop using casa all together. Two updates in a row and three drives lost.

Yeah they’re USB attached. I was using the combine storage function on the two external drives but not the nvme. I figured that was the issue for the two in the enclosure but the nvme going mia after this latest update is suspect.

If your laptop is having issues running Hogwarts Legacy, it might be relevant to include your laptop specs as well as some more specifics on what you’re looking for in a magic game.

Do you just want the magic system to be simple, or do you also want a simple, casual game? For example, Little Witch Nobeta has a simple magic system with a focus on magic combat, but it’s a Souls-like, so it could be on the difficult side.

    AlexisLuna OP ,

Thanks for reminding me about specs, I’ll add them to the post. Though I assume that it’s mostly on Hogwarts being unoptimised, because my laptop can play Cyberpunk2077 and X-4 foundations well enough. It’s 8gb ram; Ryzen5 3550h so the processor is only 3 years old. I guess 4g VRAM isn’t enough for the physics sim of MC’s clothes (seriously why is it enabled even on lowest settings).

In a game I want decent magical combat. I want to have magical attacks that have varied effects and counters. Something that makes you think which spell to use and when. I guess the most important part for me is counters. So for example, if the enemy has a magical shield, you have to somehow deal with it first, you can’t just spam click your best spell.

Ever had dry farmed tomatoes? They’re like regular homegrown tomatoes but with twice the flavor.

    Tangent5280 ,

What’s dry farming? Limiting water supply?

    ImFresh3x ,

Essentially no watering. Only works with places with some mild temps, a 20 inches of rain per year, and some morning fog etc.

Where appropriate climate and soil conditions exist, growing dry-farmed tomatoes can be a good option for specialty crops growers. Dry farming generates an intensely flavored crop much prized by consumers and retailers.

A limited number of geographic regions are suited to dry farming, which requires adequate winter rainfall and—in the case of annual crops—a summer-time marine influence that generates cool mornings and warm afternoons. These climatic conditions, combined with careful soil preparation, appropriate variety selection, adequate plant spacing, and vigilant weed control are all required to successfully produce dry-farmed crops.

    Tangent5280 ,

Thanks for your reply. I haven’t heard about this directly, but I have noticed that birds-eye-chilly plants(don’t know if this is the right name for it) get chillies that are so much more eye-watering-throat-burning-ass-blastingly spicy in the summer than other seasons. It even seems to do better when it’s NOT watered than when it is.

    AmidFuror ,

But then there would be my tomatoes and the ones at each of my local grocery stores. Am I supposed to go get some from everywhere to enjoy tomatoes?

    MorrisonMotel6 ,

It seems to me like there are 5 places the grocery store has tomatoes and and you need to check all 5 places before you know which place you should buy from. Then, maybe next time you’re at the grocery store, a different spot will have the better tomatoes and there are also 3 other new tomato stands in the store.

I’m definitely grateful for lemmy or kbin or mastodon or wherever the fuck I am right now as a reddit replacement, but this shit is confusing and annoying

    AA5B ,

Sure, and if you choose the correct place in the grocery store to get your tomatoes, you have all the fixings for a nice pico de gallo or guacamole all in one place. But why don’t they ever have chips there? I know this has to connect somewhere …… yeah

    TheDoozer ,

I think the idea is people coming from a grocery store where all the fruit and vegetables were centralized in a “produce” section and then going to a Farmers’ Market and complaining that multiple stalls sell tomatoes and having to visit all of them to go tomato shopping.

At least that’s what I’m getting from these comments. I’m new here too, and getting used to it, but I get a Farmers’ Market vibe.

    MorrisonMotel6 ,

That’s a good perspective. Thank you for that. I’ll try to look at it like a farmer’s market from now on

    snooggums ,
    @snooggums@kbin.social avatar

I go to two different grocery stores to get different vegetables because they have varying quality. For example, if I want tomatoes I go to store 1 and for onions I go to store 2. For carrots I go to either because they are fine at both.

So if two instances have tomato, onion, and carrot magazines/communities with similar quality patterns I might want to sub tomatoes at one, onions at the other, and carrots at both.

I just want an easier way to find all of the instances that have onions so I know what I might be missing at the local farmer's market. Or find out that a new farmer's market opened up!

    stringere ,

What is a “better” onion? More variety, maybe? Onions come in two kinds for me (other than type) edible and not; not a lot of spectrum on onion quality for me I guess.

Just about any other fruit or vegetable I can accept the varying quality of produce but onions and potatoes are either firm and good or mushy and not for me.

Or I could be overthinking what was probably an arbitrarily pulled example for an explanatory analogy.

    snooggums ,
    @snooggums@kbin.social avatar

Fresh, not bruised, the size I like, in stock. Just better quality overall. Same with the tomatoes at the other store.

I have no idea why there is such a difference in quality consistently for those two vegetables, but it has been consistent for a couple of years.

Since the two stores are within 5 minutes of each other and there are other reasons to go to each (brands, deli, bakery, etc.) I split the vegetables while I'm at it.

    stringere ,

Fair enough. I don’t know that I’ve ever had a grocer with consistently bruised/rotted onions. I’ll go ahead and put that in the plus column.

    Quacksalber ,

There is an interesting op-ed adressing the ‘issue’ of ‘lazy users’: arstechnica.com/…/op-ed-why-the-great-twittermigr…

Either way, you won’t convert anyone by attacking them. If you want Lemmy to be able to replace proprietary social media platforms, which is something I want, you have to meet the users’ expectations. The expectation for Lemmy is a Reddit-like experience. But with the fracturing of Lemmy into instances that block each other, normal user will simply stay on Reddit.

    bane_killgrind ,

Really mobile apps need to make multi-account easy, problem solved.

    stephenc ,

I still like individual forums and use them on occasion. For me, the reason why Reddit was better is because of the UI. The default phpBB skin is awful for following a dialog in my opinion; Reddit’s much more compact threads free of annoying signature blocks and giant user profile panels is much nicer. Personally I’d be perfectly happy to go back to the days of individual forum accounts if the forums had nice UIs like Reddit or Lemmy. Even Flarum is an example of a traditional forum software with a decent UI. The big missing thing though is threaded conversation which I much prefer over a flat forum, something that Lemmy offers.

    Calanon ,

Honestly, for anyone not particularly tech literate it’s a bit confusing. It’s got Lemmy in the name. It’s the same UI. Most are going to wonder why they’re suddenly logged out or why they need another account. It’s not intuitive if it’s not something you’re particularly used to.

dQw4w9WgXcQ , to nostupidquestions in How do you choose an instance and does that have a significant effect on your Lemmy experience?

I originally created a user on vlemmy.net. Then at some point that instance disappeared, causing me to lose the user, subscriptions and settings. So I created a user on lemmy.world. For whatever reason, it became very buggy - I don’t know if it’s the app (I’m using Jerboa) or the instance, but I got constantly logged out and loading posts didn’t work properly. I’ve been on Lemm.ee since the start with no problems. Can you sandwich together those accounts across different instances somehow?

sub_ , to gaming in Where to even start with Final Fantasy?

All the mainline games are not interconnected at all, they are pretty much very separate in terms of story / settings / characters. So you can jump into any one of the games. Also, their turn-based systems, aka Active Time Battle, aren’t anything interesting, compared to say Shin Megami Tensei’s Press Turn system. All FF games have very linear / streamlined experience compared to other games, i.e. choices don’t matter much, you don’t choose the stats, equipments are streamlined.

    Here’s some overview:

    • First 6 games were 2D games, the best of those bunches are Final Fantasy 6. Great story, great villain, great music
    • original FF7 is the one popularized the JRPG genre, and probably broke the base between older 2D fans and newcomers. It has memorable characters, music, story about eco-terrorism. The gameplay revolves around materia system, it’s like logic system where say if you connect Fire magic with All-effect and 2x-effect, you can casts double Fire magic that hits every enemies, etc. FF7 Crisis Core is one of the best FF spinoffs out there, while FF7 Remake is a ‘remake’. It’s advised that you finished the original FF7 before playing those two.
    • FF8 also broke the base. The game is more romance-centric in some way, but still sci-fi. The gameplay revolves around junction / draw system, where you draw magic from enemies to junction it to your stats.
    • FF9 is kinda back to original game. It’s more high-fantasy setting, and was released during the end of PS1. It wasn’t as popular as FF7 or FF8, but there are definitely fans. I had hard time getting into it, because the animation is kinda slow, but maybe I should replay the HD version
    • FFX is very well received, it’s a sci-fi romance story that takes place in south east Asian-like tropical islands. The first FF game on PS2. FFX has a sequel, FFX-2, which is also well received
    • FF11 is MMO, I don’t play MMO, so I have no idea about it.
    • FF12 is great, it’s more political than usual FF games, because it’s written by Matsuno, who made Tactics Ogre and FF Tactics. The gameplay is bit weird, bit MMO like.
    • FF13 was not well received, the only mainline FF game on PS3. It spawned two other games FFX-2 and FFX Lightning Returns. The main complaint about FF13 was that the story was incomprehensible, the game is very linear, and the battle mechanics is very confusing. I think what happened is that
      • they used tons of opaque in-game terms (Fal’ Cie, La’ Cie), that’s barely explained until very late in the game.
      • the game also opens up very late, there’s a one large wide region for you to roam around and engage in enemy encounters, but they only give it to you very late in the game
      • the combat wasn’t explained clearly, the paradigm shift system is actually fun, and a step up from ATB
      • annoying characters, they focused too much on Hope and Snow. Hope is a whiny child, but he’s a child, so it’s ok. Snow on the other hand, is just an annoying character who likes to talk about himself.
    • FF14 is another MMO, I don’t touch MMO
    • FF15 is kind of a mess, it was in development hell. I like the roadtrip story, where you just drive around. The open world is bit sparse and serves mostly for enemy encounters. One of the main issue is that some of the stories are gated behind DLCs. The gameplay is bit more weirder than normal ATBs. I like this game, but not as much as others.
    • FF16 is great. Devil May Cry combat, very streamlined and nicely paced story, those huge spectacle Asura’s Wrath-esque battles, etc. This game is my current GOTY.

There are other spinoff games, e.g. Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, World of Final Fantasy, but they are mostly spinoffs, mostly for fans who want more after playing the mainline.

But there’s one that I want to recommend, and that’s Final Fantasy Tactics. It’s a strategy RPG and it’s amazing. There’s an updated version released on PSP, called Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, which is probably the one you should play.

There are rumor swirling around about FF9 and FF Tactics remakes, but can’t say anything until we see it.

    thgs ,

Any personal favourites that are not so linear that you would like to suggest?

    Thebazilly ,

Final Fantasy is a lot like Zelda in that a particular person’s favorite is going to be the one they played when they were 12 years old. Depending on the age of the recommender, you are most likely to get 4, 6, or 7 as an answer.

    Personally, my favorite is FF10.

    sub_ ,

My personal favorite is original FF7, but in terms of presentation, it’s very dated.

If you don’t mind linearity, FFX is well beloved by the mainstream audience, has good story, voice acting in cutscenes.

I don’t want you to accidentally choose, say FF12, which is a great game, but bit of an acquired taste.

I’ve played Bioshock 3 a long time ago and while fun, it isn’t what I’m looking for in terms of magic. I’ve heard 1 and 2 are a bit more deep in this regard but afaik it’s still mainly a shooter. I’m currently playing Dishonored 2 and Bioshock seems more similar to that than to Hogwarts.

Control was something I’ve wanted to play for a while, mostly because of SCP-inspired story, I didn’t know anything about it’s gameplay. Will 100% check it out.

Currently Noita is my magic game and Hogwarts was in part attempt for variety. I’ve seen Magicka on steam and I dunno why, but it didn’t click for me.
