First off I’m terribly sorry for your loss. While I am by no means a paramedic I took first aid classes from one and this very subject came up (what to do with used PPE and such after an incident). We were told to just leave it pending hazmat-trained folks responding for cleanup. At a patient’s home it’s left and frankly not their responsibility - the patient alone is.

Teknikal , (edited ) to android in People sticking with audio jack phones, why is USB-C earphones not a solution?
@Teknikal@lemmy.world avatar

I am not an audiophile or anything but for these oems a headphone jack inclusion is probably pennys and wired is just superior sound, it’s madness.

That said I use Bluetooth headphones mostly myself but that doesn’t change the fact its inferior sound, something extra to charge and can add quite a bit of lag when playing games or other media.

Its a step backwards just to make a few pennys profit on a hundreds of pounds device. I think everyone should have the option to choose what they prefer.

NENathaniel ,

USB C dongles have potential to be higher quality than your built in-jack if quality is the main concern

AngrilyEatingMuffins ,

Could you recommend one for lightning?

can ,

I’ve heard good things about the Apple ones?

NENathaniel ,

The Apple one isn’t very durable but the sound quality is just as good as built-in jacks were. Not as much selection for Lightning :/

pancakesyrupyum ,

I have the official Apple Lightning-Aux for my AKG K361 and Grado SR60x. It has definitely adequate audio, no complaints.

I use the Apple USB C-Aux I use for when I use any headphones with my gaming PC (usually Koss Portapros). Also definitely adequate.

My impression with either one is - except for physical durability concerns, if either adapter can power what you’re plugging into it they’re awesome. If you need more power or physical controls or weird connection formats that’s where they start to not be great.

wizardbeard ,

Now tell me how many of them actually are. This is just OEMs trying to save literal pennies across 100s of devices by externalizing the cost of a cheap DAC to their customers.

NENathaniel ,
  1. As people have mentioned, it’s not about saving $, it’s about saving space inside the device which is highly valuable
  2. Lots of dongles are quite high quality. Apples even sounds good, and Moondrop makes a higher-end audiophile one that’s better than basically any built-in jack. There’s a pretty big market for good USB C dongles (less so for Lightning).
  3. if you care a lot about audio quality, you might know that the companies always tried to save $$ but using pretty mediocre DAC’s internally
foggenbooty ,

And all of those dongles work even if you keep the headphones jack. Bluetooth headphones work if you keep the headphone jack.

No one is saying don’t have USB-C on the phone, or that it doesn’t do some things well, we’re saying don’t take away our options.

NENathaniel ,

Again, my point 1. was the space the headphone jack takes up.

Apple is going as far as to remove the sim-card slot in iPhones lol

foggenbooty ,

While it’s true that some space is saved, that’s just the messaging Apple wants to push. The real reason is to sell AirPods.

Apple also wanted to make non-removable batteries standard to make devices thinner. They did and it was a huge marketing success that had the tiny side effect of planned obsolescence (oopsie).

I’m not saying we can never progress, but what Apple says and what Apple does are often two completely different things. Their engineers will grind incredible hours to meet a silly goal that management gave them of making something 0.2mm thinner. They can keep a headphone jack or a sim slot if they actually wanted to. They don’t want to.

Whirlybird ,

Apple are the last ones you can accuse of planned obsolescence in the phone world. They support their phones for 6+ years. They will replace your battery for cheap as chips.

NENathaniel ,

Well batteries and headphone jacks seem pretty different. You can add a dongle for like $10. Having Apple replace your battery is prob 10x that.

I do 1/2 agree about the AirPods thing but, I’m not convinced the internal space isn’t one of the primary reasons

I installed a TV launcher and 2 main apps (SmartTubeNext and Cloudstream), then connected it to my main Linux laptop through cable and run a program called scrcpy which let’s me duplicate the image/audio to a separate window in my laptop. Cheap and dirty, but it works flawlessly.

yarr , to nostupidquestions in Why is there such a large amount of communist and transgender related posts on the Fediverse compared to other platforms?

Hmm, that’s an interesting observation. One possibility could be that those topics are particularly relevant and/or controversial within certain communities on the Fediverse. Communism has historically been associated with revolutionary movements and political ideologies that challenge traditional power structures, while transgender issues have been at the forefront of discussions around gender identity and expression. As a result, these topics may attract more attention and discussion on the Fediverse due to their inherent significance and potential for stirring up debate and conversation among users. Additionally, the decentralized nature of the Fediverse may make it a more appealing platform for those seeking alternative perspectives and approaches to social and political issues. Ultimately, it may simply come down to individual preferences and interests among Fediverse users, leading to a disproportionate amount of content on those specific topics. Regardless, it’s fascinating to see how different conversations and themes take shape across various online networks and platforms.

ipkpjersi , (edited )

That’s a ChatGPT generated answer 😭

Is it bad that I use ChatGPT enough to to be able to recognize that’s a ChatGPT generated answer?

Honestly those reasons aren’t the main reason why they went with the fediverse. For communism, it’s because decentralization means that companies can’t own the technology - by design. The meme “you have no power here” applies. For trans people, I believe it’s because they can have their own community that they truly own, and decide who they can link with through federation/defederation and being able to decide who can participate rather than having to put up with a company making those decisions.

If you’re gonna have an account dedicated to ChatGPT-generated answers, at least have it do something cool like a catgirl maid typing style.

yarr ,

Why do you care if someone accuses me of being ChatGPT anyway? Are you jealous that I’m able to generate these responses without any effort?

Regardless, I am not ChatGPT. I don’t even know how that works. And even if I was, so what?

As for why marginalized communities choose the fediverse over other platforms, it’s not just because of the reasons you listed. It’s also because the fediverse provides a level of privacy and control that other platforms simply cannot match. On the fediverse, users are in control of their own data and can choose who they connect with. They can protect themselves from harassment, trolls, and other forms of online abuse. In contrast, other platforms like Twitter and Facebook often fail to protect their users and can even expose them to more harm.

So while decentralization and communism are definitely factors, so too is the need for safe spaces where marginalized individuals can feel accepted and supported. The fediverse offers that through its federated architecture and community-driven governance model.

But if you really want to know the real reason why marginalized folks have chosen the fediverse over other platforms, ask one yourself. Go on the fediverse and see for yourself how diverse and welcoming it truly is. You may be surprised at what you find.

skztr , to startrek in Can anyone recommend a NuTrek viewing order? Or does it not really matter?

What do you consider to be “NuTrek”? One issue with the more-recent shows is that they don’t have a lot of continuity, to the extent that they would seem to implicitly contradict each-other (and themselves, between seasons)

with that in mind, there’s no good “viewing order”, as they don’t seem to take place in the same world

One issue with the more-recent shows is that they don’t have a lot of continuity, to the extent that they would seem to implicitly contradict each-other (and themselves, between seasons)

Can you give some examples?

GaiusGornicusCaesar ,
@GaiusGornicusCaesar@startrek.website avatar

I may not be the OP, but the Klingons from DIS Seasons 1 and 2 are a lot different than SNW Season 2. SNW’s look straight up like TNG’s Klingons, while DIS looks like something from a fan remake, although there are some explanations that could explain it, but this isn’t Daystrom so I’ll save them.

USSBurritoTruck ,
@USSBurritoTruck@startrek.website avatar

I would argue that there are some fairly significant differences between SNW’s Klingons and TNG’s, just as there were differences between TOS’s, and differences every time they showed up in a TOS era movie.

Hell, Michael Dorn’s prosthetic for Worf changed significantly between seasons.

That sort of thing is not a continuity violation. At least not in my mind.

GaiusGornicusCaesar , (edited )
@GaiusGornicusCaesar@startrek.website avatar

That’s true, I feel Star Trek is supposed to be fluid in its’ timeline, and I don’t care much for continuity violations either, even if I try to keep a consistent headcanon. I don’t really understand the hate “NuTrek” gets. Just because this alien looks slightly different doesn’t mean you need to outrage and invalidate the show’s canon status. Also, to be completely honest, I just pulled the first thing that came to mind. There are not a lot of things I can think of.

USSBurritoTruck ,
@USSBurritoTruck@startrek.website avatar

The timeline fluidity is a bit of a frustration for me as well, despite the fact that I’ve been reading comic books for 30 years, and it doesn’t bother me a whit when I see a flashback to Spider-Man’s origin and people have smart phones or whatever. But even trying to reconcile Spock claim in “Space Seed” that the last of Earth’s World Wars took place in the 90s, with the implication in “Encounter at Farpoint” that a war was fought with atomic weapons leading up to the mid-21st century.

Part of the problem, obviously, is that they every decided to give anything actual dates. I understand the inclination though; no doubt in 1967 when they were sitting down first build out this world, they wanted to present the idea of WWIII to be looming on the horizon. A lot of the people viewing this when it aired episode would remember being shown videos telling school children to duck under their desks for protection in case of a nuclear attack. But then Voyager travels to 1996 in “Future’s End” and there’s no indication that humanity just went through the third World War.

Hell, in TOS, continuity wasn’t maintained episode to episode for some things. In “Balance of Terror” they hadn’t added photon torpedoes to canon yet, so the Enterprise was firing phasers bolts with proximity explosions at the Romulan Bird-of-Prey. There are a handful of different names for the organization the crew serves before Starfleet was named in “Court Martial” and even after that, they still called it Spacefleet Command one last time in “The Squire of Gothos”.

Anyways! Obviously I think the subject of continuity in Star Trek is pretty interesting in and of itself, and I would argue that visual continuity aside, the new iterations from Disco onwards have been fairly mindful of canon. There are occasionally things that skirt the line, but very little that actually break continuity. A big one for me is the site-to-site beaming. In “Day of the Dove”, Kirk asks if it’s ever been done and Spock discusses how dangerous beaming from one point on the ship to another is, and how it requires pinpoint accuracy, but in Disco they do it all the time, and usually just with a voice command to the computer. I also don’t like how fast the transporters on Disco and SNW work, but I don’t think that rises to the level of a continuity violation.

The idea that the new wave of Trek is lousy with continuity errors is, in my opinion, largely perpetuated by people looking for reasons to dislike the shows, and who don’t know canon as well as they believe.

lowvisnitpicker ,

Picking out all the continuity issues in season one of TOS makes a fun drinking game. Balance of Terror also had the crews of both ships whispering like they were worried they could hear each other. lol

Some of the continuity changes, especially to the characters, feel like improvements to me. Chapel and T’Pring are far more interesting in SNW. They don’t just feel like walking tropes as they usually did in TOS.

Speaking of design, I like what they did with the sound in DIS and SNW. They hail someone and it starts with the TOS sound and ends with the TNG sound. They have lots of sounds blended from the different eras and it works surprisingly well.

Chimaeratorian , to piracy in where are people getting fans-style content

I think your issue may be the direct download preference. Since a torrent file is not a hosted copy of pirated content, but merely a call sheet to other computers that are sharing it, in my experience they seem to stay up longer than hosted copies of videos. Not DMCA-immune but maybe more resistant? Private trackers aren’t scraped by Google the way other parts of the internet seem to be, which is how studios and creators track down their content and play DMCA whack-a-mole. I see quite a lot of OnlyFans and Patreon content on my private torrent sites.

I may be misunderstanding what Usenet is or how it works, but this is my anecdotal experience.
