magiccupcake , to nostupidquestions in Why are doctors so hands off and unhelpful in the USA?

I’ve only tangentially heard about this, but another issue is that doctors in the US don’t have to, and aren’t encouraged to keep up with recent research.

Combine that with a medical education system that hasn’t changed drastically in 70 years to keep up with that new research and most US doctors are just out of date.

Lemmeenym ,

There is some variation by state but in the US almost all licensed medical professionals are required to participate in continuing education to keep their license.

Maeve ,

Our ICD -10 is about a decade behind WHO, iirc.

Drusas , to nostupidquestions in Why are doctors so hands off and unhelpful in the USA?

I'm sorry you've gone through this, but I am also an American suffering from the same issues as you, and I have found no shortage of ENTs willing to shove the camera down my nose. That seems to be what they always recommend straight from the get-go.

Buttflapper OP ,

Seems to be especially bad in Georgia where there’s very poor access to healthcare. More progressive places like NY may have different results I’m not sure. It’s just shocking, no one will even consider helping me

Drusas ,

That is difficult. I assume you've tried Atlanta? I would think you would be able to find decent care there. If not, it might be worth traveling a few hours to wherever you can just to get a diagnosis at least.

And make sure the doctor or clinic knows in advance what you are seeking.

Maeve ,

It's pretty much the same. Most insurance companies follow CMS policy.

Cenzorrll , to selfhosted in Whats on your USB stick? Looking for recommendations for handy tools

I don’t keep a Swiss army knife set of distros anymore. I put tumbleweed on a USB. It’s rolling so I update it when I plug it in, then do what I need to do.

I used to have a USB with Ubuntu LTS and whatever the newest Ubuntu was. Then another would get something else that I needed/wanted. I always ended up wiping the drive and adding the newest release every single time. I was always out of date by the time I needed one of them for boot repair or something. This was also a time when persistence… Wasn’t very persistent. With tumbleweed I can install whatever I need and it’s there next time. I’m sure you can do the same with any other rolling release, but tumbleweed is in my opinion on par stability-wise with incremental distros. It’s my first grab whenever I need to check a PC. If I need another distro or boot USB, I can make it from this one with a second USB. I suppose the only thing I can’t do is make a bootable USB if the computer I’m on can’t access the Internet

wewbull , to technology in Bots are running rampant. How do we stop them from ruining Lemmy?
  1. Make bot accounts a separate type of account so legitimate bots don’t appear as users. These can’t vote, are filtered out of post counts and users can be presented with more filtering option for them. Bot accounts are clearly marked.
  2. Heavily rate limit any API that enables posting to a normal user account.
  3. Make having a bot on a human user account bannable offence and enforce it strongly.

filtered out of post counts

Revolutionary. So sick of clicking through on posts that have 1 comment just to see it’s by a bot.

How do you make a bot register as a bot?

wewbull ,

Points 2 and 3. Basically make restrictions on normal user accounts which are fine for humans but that will make bots swear and curse.

Unless you mean “what should the registration process be” I think API keys via a user account would do.

I’ve been using Linux on and off for years and I’ve never really understood what these different directories are for. If I don’t know where something is I just search for it, though more often than not whatever I’m looking for is somewhere in the home directory. I’m also not sure of the accuracy of this though. I have a VM in /run, and an SSD and thumb drive in /media. I would’ve expected these to be in /mnt.

Finally bit the bullet and got a Thinkpad and I’m leaning towards putting Fedora on it. I’ve never used Linux before but I’ve done some research and I like the idea of something that updates more often than Debian but isn’t as DIY as Arch. Do y’all think Fedora would make a good starting point? I hear it’s stable enough and offers enough non-free applications through the RPM file management system.

Also, are there any drawbacks in using the immutable Silverblue version? I’m considering it just so I don’t do anything dumb by accident.

thedeadwalking4242 ,

Never be afraid to try different distros you can always wipe and try again. You won’t break your computer. I’m a big fan of immutable distros but I’ve never tried fedora blue. Either will make a rock solid system

Cornflake_Dog ,
@Cornflake_Dog@lemmy.wtf avatar

Thank you! :]

koncertejo ,

Fedora is what I’ve got on my Thinkpad right now and so far it seems pretty good! Silverblue is very intriguing to me but I chose not to go with it because I need to be able to modify aspects of how the lower system works (using JACK for audio for music production purposes; afaik this is not really supported through Flatpak). Compared to Arch or Nix OS or whatever else that’s popular with the hardcore Linux enthusiasts, Fedora is just right for someone that needs a working system to just get stuff done.

Veraxis , to linux in [Unpopular opinion] Linux is not a good choice for regular users
@Veraxis@lemmy.world avatar

I am looking through these issues and I cannot say that I can relate on almost any of these. Sorry to hear you have been having so many issues!

I do plenty of gaming and cannot think of a time where I have had GPU driver issues (despite the fact that I have Nvidia graphics on 3 out of 4 of my systems, which is supposedly more problematic).

My bluetooth works fine, and it has been literally years since an update broke something, bluetooth or otherwise (which I cannot say the same for Windows on my work computer).

I use KDE connect, SFTP, and SMB servers and I have never had any issues transferring files between Windows, Android, and Linux. What do you mean about that? (seeing other replies, it sounds like you are using iOS. That sounds like that may be an Apple problem and not a Linux problem, because Apple tend to be terrible about playing nice with other ecosystems)

The scaling is the one point I can sort of relate on. I think there is still some work to be done regarding DPI and scaling on Linux, but it’s not enough of an issue to make me want to switch operating systems.

As for GNOME issues and window decorations, that sounds like a GNOME problem. GNOME does things very differently to all of the other DEs and forces programs to manually define their own window decorations rather than allowing standard default icons like other DEs, so my understanding is that GNOME in particular tends to be a source of constant headaches for Linux developers.

And I’m not some sysadmin or CS major. If I have a problem, I do a web search. If I can’t find it there, I make a forum thread. I don’t post a rant saying that Linux is a bad OS, lol.

fart_pickle OP ,

Your comment is a perfect Linux answer - it works on my computer :) And I don’t mean it as an insult. The problem here is that Linux, despite of all its advantages, is not for a global consumer.

Veraxis ,
@Veraxis@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, but my larger point is that you are doing the same thing, but in the negative. You are taking your specific problems and then putting forward the conclusion that they are the reasons why “regular” Linux users should not use Linux, as though these were universal problems. I am saying that I do not have those issues and that they are far from universal.

Yes, the modular nature of Linux is both a blessing and a curse. There is legitimate debate to be had on that. But that is not how your post frames the issue.

As stated above, not all of these things are even Linux problems. I would say that if iOS refuses to play nice with Linux but every other ecosystem works fine, the blame lies with Apple, not with Linux. It is not Linux’s job to fix the interoperability problems of other ecosystems. The GNOME problems are related to a specific subset of Linux users, and even before today I would have said that I would not recommend GNOME to new users because of how nonstandard it can be.

JustMarkov ,

While your post is just: it doesn’t work on my computer, so Linux is bad for a normal user.

floofloof ,

So we know these things work on one person’s computer (theirs) but not on another’s (yours). Such anecdotal experiences are not a reasonable basis on which to judge any OS, positively or negatively.

N0x0n ,

Also, on your SMB server you need to add a specific configuration to play nice with OS X…

wiki.samba.org/…/Configure_Samba_to_Work_Better_w…

So yeah that’s on OP not reading through the documentation.
