Current and future Linux experience: A functional and well engineered system, built by its users, for its users, and constantly improved based on feedback from the community. A scientist is studying a group of nomadic hunters when he notices there aren’t any women in the group. He asks a hunter if they ever miss romantic companionship. The hunter replies “when we get lonely, we use our horses”. The scientist is shocked by this at first, but as the weeks go by, his desires grow and he begins to look at the horses differently. One night, when the desire was too strong to ignore, he leaves his tent to mount one of the horses. It was awkward and difficult but he eventually manages. The next day, he tells the hunter he used one of the horses for relief, but not without a lot of difficulty. He asks if they had developed any special techniques to make things easier. The hunter says “we normally just ride them to the nearest village.”

I still use my bought in 2012 Photoshop CS 6, almost daily, no plans to upgrade. If i need to keep one of my PCs with windows, i won’t mind sticking to a old version for the long run

Cs6 was peak PS!

Zetta ,

GIMPs biggest upgrade in like a decade should be coming out this year, you’ll have to check it out and see if it meets your needs when it does.

Mango , to nostupidquestions in Has anyone here ever been permanently banned from reddit? If so, is there any way to get unbanned?

Me. Also no. I made r/Artisanvideos, turned it into a thriving community, and got sacked for a tongue in cheek comment. I get the impression that Reddit’s admins specifically pound the pavement to remove people from their successful work and take it for themselves.

Tbh, it’s really nice to not have to obsess over that anymore.

Blaze ,

Sorry to hear, must have felt bad after growing that community.

If you ever want to grow communities again, feel free to have a look at !fedigrow

Mango ,

It was kind of spur of the moment to make it. I saw a need and made it happen! I don’t generally try to do that, but after it started actually growing I got obsessed and defensive about it. I can’t tell you how crazy agitated I got about spammers, advertisers, pluggers, and bots. I regularly told people off. It was always “quit your bullshit, don’t even try to act like you’re not here for the giant audience visibility on our relatively low post count” and people would call me a tyrant because I shut the door on them trying to abuse it. I’m literally the reason r/subredditdrama was born. I don’t want any of that anymore and I lucked out having found a good guy to leave in charge a good few months before I was banned. It’s so hard to find the right guy who’s not just clamoring for power.

You know what my biggest problem with descriptivists precriptivists is? What is “correct” always coincides exactly to what they learned in school or university from 15 - 20. It’s never anything else. Never in like 20.000 years of human history did we nail language except for that timeframe, and never will it happen again. what a coinkidink.

v4ld1z ,
@v4ld1z@lemmy.zip avatar

Prescriptivists you mean. Descriptivists describe language phenomena as they are without passing judgment on their validity whereas prescriptivists have certain assumptions on what constitutes parts of the language to be valid and prescribe meaning to them

7bicycles ,

there’s a joke here about me rejecting the notion of what prescriptivist and descriptivist mean

but yes, thanks, got some wires crossed there

My comment was more so meant to prove to myself that I didn’t mix anything up and still remember the definitions lol

psud ,

Much of the stuff people correct each other on is stuff we all were taught. It just didn’t sink in for some.

Though there are outdated and incorrect ideas (eg “no split infinitives in English” was never correct, but was taught when boomers were in school, and later in less progressive places)

Swedneck ,

i think we need more prescriptivists who insist we should all speak toki pona and write in chinese

I’d respect that a lot more on the basis of you have to have argued yourself into that one in some way that isn’t being subservient to your elementary school teachers authority at 45

That’s any future app. And the kick in the nards is that the developer who allow it earn like $2 a day if lucky. So we all get burned on the ad hellscape having hours of time wasted for $2

Not open source apps, glad I’ve pivoted to almost entirely open source software. SaaS is cancer.

MovingThrowaway , to asklemmy in What is a less popular type/genre of movies that you watch ? What makes it interesting for you ?

Movies like Beau is Afraid, with a lot of themes and symbolism to dissect that rewards repeat viewing.

You might say that all movies have themes and symbolism, intentional or otherwise, and I agree. But what I mean and why Beau might be a good example is a lot of people call it self indulgent and meandering and way too long, and that’s exactly what I want it to be.

They may not always be coherent or even have any substance behind all the smoke and mirrors and layers but I still enjoy the vibe.

LarkinDePark , to asklemmy in if you are a nurse or know nurses, do you / they feel sore after each shift?

How long is a normal shift?

Atelopus-zeteki ,
@Atelopus-zeteki@kbin.run avatar

Shifts are generally 12 hours. However, it's pretty common to have a case come in at 11:30, and one is on that case till it's done. So 13-14 hour shifts are not uncommon.

LarkinDePark ,

I don’t know why healthcare has to be like this. I could single out the USA for labour practices but it seems like this is common throughout the industry, at least in the west. Ireland for example.

Atelopus-zeteki ,
@Atelopus-zeteki@kbin.run avatar

I have my own clinic. I work 6 hour shifts. Healthcare doesn't have to be like this.

catloaf , to news in Media Bias Fact Check - Automation

Does this consider the bias of who runs MBFC?

Rooki OP ,
@Rooki@lemmy.world avatar

Its a human. Like every page.

catloaf ,

So no?

irotsoma ,
@irotsoma@lemmy.world avatar

I mean the data is all there for you to look at and experts who have looked at it have agreed it is minimally biased. If you want something that is unbiased, then you’re out of luck, every human has bias. If you believe all experts are biased, you’re also right, but they’re way less biased than someone being paid to be biased. So like everything, you can’t wait forever for perfection, and anyone who tells you they are perfect and totally unbiased is likely the most biased, anyway.

goferking0 ,

What data? They have a methodology but don’t make any of what they actually complie for rates public.

It’s a bias rating system based on 1 guys bias

irotsoma ,
@irotsoma@lemmy.world avatar

The data is there, too. The data is there for every rated organization. It has the history and funding of the individual media plus links to related media organizations that are funded and controlled by the same sources. It has political activity and endorsements made by the organization. And it has a list of failed fact checks and other related issues which are links to external fact checkers. If you read the methodology, this is the data it uses for each rating and all of it is there.

goferking0 ,

They have that listed but they have big bias when doing the final conclusion and overall ranking.

As others have pointed out some sources mbfc don’t like will have high fact checking with no failures, but then lower credibility ratings.

irotsoma ,
@irotsoma@lemmy.world avatar

But the information is all there for you to make your own decision. What other outlets are there that have 0 bias? At least this one has all the info gathered and even if you take the ratings themselves with a grain of salt, it is the best source available at the moment.

As I mentioned above, there’s no such thing as an unbiased person, product, or organization. You take what is least biased, apply common sense, and consume responsibly. No one is going to force feed you all the information without bias on any subject, even if they do their best to be unbiased. Expecting perfection or nothing at all, gives you nothing at all in almost all aspects of life.

tomkatt , to mildlyinfuriating in I need new glasses. The only insurance-approved place I can shop online will cost $250 with my needs. I went to a "cheap" glasses website that doesn't accept insurance: $250. Yay, America.

I recently went for glasses and eye exam. Near sighted with astigmatism, and now I need bifocals on top of it. Bifocals with line aren’t common now so doctor suggested progressives. I’m fine with that.

I’m also a special kid who can’t wear polycarbonate lenses because I’m hypersensitive to chromatic aberration. So need Trivex lenses as well. Throw in an anti-glare coating and my cost (with insurance) is like $460.

The sad part is given my needs and how few carry Trivex in my area, I consider it a decent deal.

FlyingSquid OP ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

tomkatt ,

Don’t be. I’m fortunate to be able to afford it comfortably, and it’s just part of the cost of living to me. In my 40s now and been wearing glasses since I was 10yo.

I’m just happy I’ll be able to read fine print and see stuff close again without needing to take off my glasses.
